ake me out of the ball game, please!
I was a beautiful baseball
blunder. My ineptitude of
physical talent was a wonder
to behold, challenged only by
my shrinking attention span.
Mom and Dad always looked
so surprised when I said I
wanted to try out again, par-
ticularly the year everyone
else moved up into Little
League.
I remember the tryouts
well. It was bright and cloud-
less, the red clay base track
was raked, but was uneven
after the line of boys chased
hits, planted a foot, and slung
the ball back to home plate in
one deft motion.
Standing in line with me,
Dad gave me a sympathetic
look and asked again, “Now
you’re sure you want to do
this?’’
I remember thinking,
“Why, should I not?”
They hit a fly ball and a
grounder out to you, just past
second base. My turn was up,
and the bat cracked the first
ball my way. The ground ball
prowled through the grass
and dirt toward me as I tried
to remember to open my
glove all the way and make
sure it was against the
ground. When it was close
enough to smell my fear, the
ball pounced, leaping for my
throat with a vigor hidden
until now. It was all I could
do to fend it off and bat it
away with my glove. I picked
up the dead ball and threw it
back to home plate. It rolled
in the last 20 feet.
Allow me to take a moment
to describe my throwing
motion. Gripping the ball like
it’s trying to squirm away, I
rocked on the balls of my
feet, holding the ball under
my chin or over my shoulder,
flinging outward in a cata-
pulting motion.
This rare form is a combi-
nation shot put throw, over
hand windmill release. It was
taught to me by a kid I stood
in line next to the first year
after tee ball while waiting in

line for something that wasn’t
the concession stand. He
never played, but I knew
unique form when I used it.
The form has a rainbow arc
but not a lot of range, and is
most effective for making
sure the second baseman
loses the throw in the lights
when launched from right
field.
Fortunately, most of base-
ball didn’t involve me throw-
ing to anyone.
Most of baseball involved
me studying the fauna popu-
lating right field, particularly
the large multi-colored
grasshoppers with the striped
legs. Those were best and you
could feel them springing up
and down through a closed
fielder’s mitt. My only mar-
ketable talent was batting. I
remember my glorious stand
at the plate, batting eight,
maybe nine balls foul, one
after another from the pitch-
ing machine, before finally
striking out. But for that
minute and a half, I was a
shiny golden god with a
Louisville Slugger.
I retired from baseball at
the end of the season, storing
my glove carefully in the out-
door sports box in the garage
for future generations of mud
daubers to build nests in. I
remember, around the same
time as puberty set in, vowing
not to be embarrassed by my
parents. Who knew they’d
already returned the favor?

Cut Planned Parenthood
from the budget
During this time of national fiscal cri-
sis we should be looking at ways to cut
government spending. I believe it
should start with ending taxpayer fund-
ing of Planned Parenthood which
receives over $360 million in taxpayer
funding each year.
Why so, you ask? Planned
Parenthood is not a charitable organiza-
tion and it has an annual budget of over
a million dollars. While it does offer
some health screenings for some
women’s health issues, it is primarily an
abortion-centered business - the largest
in the world. Regardless of those few
medical screenings, most Americans
would agree that abortion is not health-
care.
Even though abortion is legal in the
United States right now, there are
restrictions in place including parental
consent, reporting of child/adult sexual
relationships and how far into the preg-
nancy an abortion can be performed,
among others. Unfortunately, any both-
ersome rules and regulations are rou-
tinely ignored or circumvented. And it
is not just administrative regulations
that are ignored. Women have been ter-
ribly injured, horribly infected or died
because of issues such as a lack of ster-
ilization and a disregard for safety pro-
cedures. Abortion centers are not even
held to minimum standards of care.
Recent undercover videos show
Planned Parenthood employees in sev-
eral states aiding and abetting human
trafficking. Our government has no
business in being involved in the abor-
tion business. Citizen taxpayers should-
n’t have to have their hard-earned dol-
lars going to an abortion-centered, scan-
dal-plagued organization, especially
during the current fiscal crisis in our
country.
Americans are pinching pennies in
this economy. Our Congress needs to
get serious about cutting government
spending before we go bankrupt. I urge
our elected representatives in
Washington to disallow any funding of
Planned Parenthood as a part of the
Continuing Resolution or budget. I ask
that each of you write, call, fax or email
your own representative with this same
message.

Auxiliary members say thanks
The members of American Legion
Auxiliary Unit No. 346 of Ganado take
this opportunity to thank everyone that
purchased tickets and supported our
fried chicken fund raiser which proved
to be a big success.
Special thanks, recognition and
appreciation go to many individuals and
organizations. Among them are our
local newspaper, the Jackson County
Herald-Tribune, for publicizing the
event, the American Legion Post 346
members for their help and use of the
hall, the Boy Scouts and Scoutmaster of
Troop 135 whose young legs were so
helpful and their enthusiasm was
catchy; Citizens State Bank for provid-
ing tickets available for purchase, and
the Ganado Police Department for the
running notice on the marquee.
To all of the above along with all our
members, we are very grateful. God
Bless You.
Funds derived from this project go to
scholarships, the Girls State program
and veteran's causes.
