Granddaughter graduates
rom Waco High School
participating in sports.
At Waco High, she took
college preparatory
classes
through the
AVID pro-
gram and
graduated
with a 3.6
grade point
average. She
participated
in volleyball
and basket-
ball and
served as an
athletic
trainer. She
enjoys reading and music
is a self-taught hair styl-
ist. She has also dabbled
in dress design. She has
done volunteer work in
various venues.
Alicia, who has been
accepted at Navarro Col-
lege for the fall semester,
plans to major in Crimi-
nal Justice and minor in
Sociology
She wants to work in
the areas of Social Work
and Forensics. She even-
tually hopes to obtain a
doctorate in Criminal
Justice. Solving crimes
and helping others is
what she wants to do. Her
parents and grandpar-
joyed going to school and ents have always taught
With the ending of this
school year, our family,
like many others, proudly
celebrated the
graduation of
a family mem-
ber. In the case
of Debra and
me, it was our
granddaugh-
ter, Alicia
Denise Bass,
who was part
of the Class of
2012 of my
alma mater
Waco High
School.
Alicia, who was born
in Houston on September
14, 1993, is the second of
three children of our
younger daughter
JoAnna Bass-Parker and
her husband Charles
Parker. She is a ninth-
generation descendant
from an African named
Gobi. She grew up in
Waco. Her older brother,
Dominique Bass-Parker,
graduated from Waco
High in 2011. Her
younger brother, Charles
Davion Bass-Parker, cur-
rently attends school in
Cedar Hill, where the
Parker family now lives.
Alicia has always en-
Alicia Denise Bass
her that she can make a
difference and she is de-
termined to do this.
On Saturday June 2,
Debra and I joined family
members at Alicia’s grad-
uation ceremony at Bay-
lor University’s Ferrell
Center, the site of the
1995 graduation in which
both our older daughter
Ericha Bass-Prox and I
received degrees.
This year’s ceremony
was followed by dinner at
Waco’s Summer Palace.
Our family is very
proud of Alicia in her
achievement of this mile-
stone and wish her God’s
richest blessings as she
embarks on the next
chapter of her life.
The Rev. Bob Uzzel is
pastor of Wayman Chapel
AME Church in Ennis.
