Tenaha cuts ribbon for new business
By Florence Reeh
Rinkles Grocery Store, a
fixture in Tenaha for a good
many years, is no longer
Rinkles. As of last Thursday,
the grand opening ribbon was
cut and new owners of the
newly named 4J’s Grocery of
Tenaha, were introduced .
4J’s’ is named for the Carl
Jernigan Family. Carl, wife
Vickie, daughter Lauren and
son, Josh - the 4J’s. Besides be-
ing a clever title, the store it-
self is cleverly designed inside
for groceries of all kinds, a
meat market for fresh meat, ice
boxes filled with ice cream and
all kinds of frozen foods, and
dairy foods such as milk, eggs,
etc. And if that wasn’t enough,
there is a roomy restaurant in
one side where folks can sit and
eat delicious meals freshly
cooked every day right there in
a neat kitchen.
Rinkles Grocery had its be-
ginning in Tenaha and grew
into several other stores with
that name. Carl Jernigan the
father of the 4J’s family, was
the manager and meat cutter at
Rinkles for ten years before
starting a business of his own
called C&J A/C and Electri-
cal. Carl is the son of Carrol
Jernigan and the late Janet
Ramsey of Joaquin. His wife,
Vickie, is the daughter of the
late James Paxton and Leone
Sholar. She is a 5th generation
Tenaha resident and has sub-
stituted at Tenaha Schools for
the past 10 years. She is the 4-
H leader and Booster Club
president.
The other two J's are son,
Josh, a graduate of Tenaha
ISD, now currently working
in the a/c and electrical field.
“I also help out in the store
when I am needed, working in
the deli, carry outs and stock-
ing, “he said.
Daughter, Lauren, is a
sophomore at Tenaha High
School, a cheerleader and a
Tiger Doll. She really is a doll,
with a beautiful smile and
friendly personality. “I have
been helping check and work
in the deli,” she said, smiling.
She is very good at both jobs.
The Deli area is a popular
part of the store and several
more tables and chairs have
been added already. Carl is
currently working on moving
the hardware to the front of the
store and so far, the changes
have improved the convenience
of shopping for the customers.
“We still have lots of plans
for changes in the store that
will happen over a period of
time and hope they will all ben-
efit the citizens of Tenaha and
the surrounding areas, “Vickie
said Thursday at the grand
opening.
All of the Jernigans have
admitted they really enjoyed
making the transition to store
owners and enjoy meeting new
people and visiting with every-
one who comes into the store
each day.
They all agree that they
have great employees who
have really shown them a lot
and who have really gone the
extra mile in helping them leam
the ropes. “We appreciate all
of them, behind the check out
counter and in the deli and ev-
ery where else in the store,”
said Carl Jernigan.
So, welcome to Tenaha,
4J’s! We are all very proud of
you and what you have
brought to the city. See you
soon while shopping!

Timpson Council to apply for two grants
By Florence Reeh
The Timpson City Council
met at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall
Tuesday with two council
members absent. Councilman
Ronnie Wolfe opened the meet-
ing with a prayer. There was
no citizen input. Minutes and
Financial report of June 17th
meeting were read and ap-
proved. Accounts payable was
approved with an addition of
one item. Total amount ap-
proved was $129, 969. 61.
With no old business heard,
new business included a dis-
cussion of a grant application
surveying multiple areas of the
city. The secretary opened a
discussion of the grant, filling
the council out concerning the
grant in the amount of $39,
250.00 which included survey-
ing the city of Timpson, pro-
viding the following informa-
tion: mapping, land use, hous-
ing, population, water distribu-
tion study, wastewater study
collection, and supply, drain-
age study, streets and flood
hazard areas, capital improve-
ments program, parks and rec-
reation, economic develop-
ment, study, and/or tourism,
zoning ordinance and subdivi-
sion regulation, and a central
business district study. She it-
erated that approval of the
grant would provide informa-
tion to help obtain other grants
for things like sidewalk repair.
A 10 % percent match would
make better odds for obtaining
the grant, according to the sec-
retary. The council approved
the application.
Another grant for Solid
Waste project was discussed
by the council and action was
approved to apply for this
grant in the amount of $19,
600.00.
A discussion followed con-
cerning getting someone to
help with grant applications.
Council agreed to look further
into to this suggestion.
It was reported that the Po-
lice department was having a
problem with Cobb Lumber
including trucks loading and
unloading causing a dangerous
situation and the removal of
junk around the lumber yard.
The need for a fence around the
entire business was mentioned
and it was agreed that the mat-
ter would be looked into.
The Municipal Court report
was presented by the City Sec-
retary. There were 34 citations
issued by the Police Dept, from
June 19 through the 30th. Un-
der Public Works, Larry Burns
noted that fire hydrants and
water meters were checked
with some problems occurring.
He also reported that Tommy
Sparks was hospitalized with
heart problems and was ex-
pected to be out soon.
It was also noted that there
was a need to erect traffic signs
in some places to warn drivers
of a 30 mph speed limit. It was
noted that high speed in the city
limits causes a danger to pe-
destrians.
Councilman Ronnie Wolfe
alerted the council members
that Budget time was only one
month away.
