WHAT SAITH THE SCRIPTURES?
San Augustine
Church of Christ
Tom Cruise is one of the
most popular actors in Hol-
lywood. Brad Pitt is just as
well-known. Tom
Brady is one of
the most suc-
cessful athletes
in the National
Football League.
Lance
Armstrong is another who
has become a household
name in the sports world
with his success at the Tour
de France. What all these
ever, is that they all have
either fathered illegitimate
children and/or have lived
openly with a woman who
is not their spouse. In other
words, they have commit-
ted fornication, and in some
cases adultery. The list
could go on among celeb-
rities and the common man
alike. Nor are women ex-
empted. Lindsay Lohan,
Paris Hilton, Jessica
Simpson, and others have
openly been involved in
wedlock. There is no secret
to their flagrant fornication
and they seem unashamed
about it being known pub-
licly. The Hollywood press
glamorizes the celebrity sta-
tus to the point that we fail
many times to appreciate the
ugliness of sin and deprav-
ity which often saturates the
lives of those our society
loves to adulate the most.
I believe the ungodly
lifestyles of the rich and fa-
mous often play a large part
sexual immorality that is so
rampant within our own
country. What we are bom-
barded with through the me-
dia (television & maga-
zines) has a tendency to de-
sensitize us to sin to such an
extent that we often tolerate
and turn a blind eye to the
evil within the communities
where we live. We do this
without any thought of how
detestable our own compro-
mising conduct is in the sight
of God.

Grace and peace from our
brother Jesus, Amen. Sun-
day was the 14th Sunday of
Ordinary Time. The Old
Testament Lesson for today
was 2 Samuel 6: 1-5, 12b-
19. In the lesson we see that
David and thousands have
gathered at David’s city to
accompany the Ark of the
Covenant into the capital of
a united Israel . David led
the worship and celebration
with shouts of joy, singing,
and dancing. The Ark was a
visible reminder of our need
to feel and know that God is
present among us. Roy and
Maxine Dent returned to
church for the first time
since they both were sick.
Both said they were still
very weak but their pres-
ence among us today made
us feel more complete as a
congregation. Joyce May
worshipped with us today
and it is always great to see
Joyce.
This past week, people
worked in the garden,
mowed the church grounds,
and cleaned the sanctuary,
fellowship hall, and all the
classrooms. Everything
looked so nice this morn-
ing. Our Clean & Green
Crew included Bill Skinner,
R A. Newton, Glenn Gill,
Gayle Samford, Ed
Goldsum, Pat Pate, Sue
Smith, and Randy Smith.
Thanks!

About this time of year
I start thinking about au-
tumn! How sweet it will be
when the mornings are cool
and crisp and the nights in-
vite us to sit outside and
enjoy the breezes that carry
the sound of neighbor’s
voices and lawnmower en-
gines. I start thinking about
autumn because I don’t
want to think of August, or
September for that matter.
When I was a child our
hometown always had a
county fair over the Labor
Day weekend and we
needed a sweater to be
comfortable in the night air.
But those days are long
gone; aren’t they? Now
September seems just as hot
as August and I have to long
for October for my cooler
weather and less humidity.
The lawns and shrubs
and trees are really strug-
gling to survive our summer
days that bake all the mois-
ture out of the air and
ground. In fact, we have a
few peach trees at our farm
with bark which has split
from exposure to the south-
west sun. These peach
trees produce white
peaches and were given to
me by a dear friend from
Geneva, Texas, when I was
his pastor. His name was
Ab Smith and he had a
huge peach tree which pro-
duced the best peaches I
ever tasted. One autumn
day about ten years ago, Ab
gave me and Pat about
seven little peach trees
which had sprung up from
his peach tree. Ab said for
me to plant them all be-
cause they wouldn’t all sur-
vive. But they did. Actu-
ally we gave two to Pat’s
brother and the two he
planted survived too. Back
to my story, though. We
have five peach trees which
produce the best white
peaches you ever tasted.
You can appreciate my
distress when I saw that one
of the peach trees had suf-
fered a rupture in its trunk.
The bark just split open for
about six inches near the
bottom of the tree. Jeff Abt
(who’s almost as good as
Aubrey King) advised
wrapping the trees with bur-
lap or some other protective
insulation to prevent further
damage from that old hot
sun which bears down on
them. Pat called the nurs-
ery to ask their recommen-
dations and they concurred
- except they said it was too
late for the one with the bark
already split. Wrap the oth-
ers and medicate the one
which was split. Pat did a
good job wrapping and tend-
ing the peach trees and I’m
sure they must feel better
after all the attention he de-
voted to his task. Now we’ll
just have to wait and see if
the one damaged tree recov-
ers.
When I look at those
trees with the burlap wraps,
I am reminded of sackcloth
in the Old Testament. Sack-
cloth was a sign of sorrow
and lament and was worn
not only by mourners but
was also worn as a symbol
for repentance for transgres-
sions. Like my peach trees,
our culture has some serious
ruptures caused by exposure
to the scorching heat of
unrighteousness. God prom-
ises though in 2 Chronicles
7:14 that “ if my people who
are called by my name
humble themselves, pray,
seek my face, and turn from
their wicked ways, then I
will hear from heaven, and
will forgive their sin and
heal their land.” NRSV
I think we could use
some burlap wraps.
for example, within our
own community of teen-
age girls having to have
abortions because of the
sexual promiscuity they
are involved in.
Others, from their
early teens on up are on
birth control. School of-
ficials have been known
to take teenage girls to get
abortions or to provide
condoms for “safe sex”
with no admonition of the
immorality involved.
We have failed to a large
degree to respect God’s di-
vine will in this matter—
“But among you there must
not be even a hint of sexual
immorality, or of any kind
of impurity, or of greed, be-
cause these are improper for
God’s holy people”
(Ephesians 5:3).
May we all be encour-
aged to think of God daily
and his expectations for our
own individual lives.
It is a real tragedy when
we fail to do so.
