Fires and fire danger
up, caution urged
The Texas Forest Service
reports increased wildfire ac-
tivity across northeast Texas
counties. The agency at-
tributes much of the increased
numbers of wildfires to care-
less debris burning by people
who don’t realize that dormant
grass and fallen leaves are
flammable enough to burn
readily. TFS fire control lead-
ers urge extra caution with all
outdoor fire use throughout
the region. Residents living in
and around areas where ice-
damaged trees and brush re-
main should be especially cau-
tious. Fire danger can be ex-
pected to quickly rise and fall
- depending on the weather -
until vegetation greens up in
the spring.
Dormant grass and fallen
leaves get their moisture from
the air, not from the ground.
When dry, windy weather per-
sists, these fuels will quickly
become fire-prone, even when
soil is damp or boggy. Numer-
ous runs by volunteer fire de-
partments across the northeast
Texas area attest to the flam-
mability of surface fuels and

Tenaha ISD approves microwave tower

The Tenaha ISD Board of
trustees met Thursday
evening at 5: 30 P.M.. Meet-
ing was opened with prayer
by Chip Roberson. There was
no public comment and the
group moved to Item 9 on the
agenda which was discussion
of a microwave tower to be
built on property that the
school owns on Loop 96 in
Tenaha. After much discus-
sion by Rusty Ivey, Dr. Cook,
Steve Hawkins, Dr. Powell,
Kelley Rogers and Ann Mor-
ris, the board voted to approve
the contract six to one.
Trustee Bo Morris was the
dissenting vote.
Minutes from the previous
meeting were approved as
well as the payment of
monthly bills. The investment
report was approved and text
books for 2003-04 adopted.
A Campus Improvement
plan passed and an adden-
dum to the hand books ap-
proved. A list of substitute
teachers for 2002-03 met with
board approval.
Elementary Principal
Jackie Kirkwood reports 196
students enrolled with atten-
dance at 98.67 %. The middle
school has 93 students and at-
tendance at 97.29 %. Mr.
Jones reported 107 students
enrolled at 93.30 % atten-
dance.
Mr. Weeks, superintendent,
reported that the principals
have done an outstanding job
on average daily attendance
which has helped the money
problem.
The board retired into ex-
ecutive session and upon re-
convening, extended Mr.
Weeks contract for one year.
Tenaha’s 117th
birthday party

Speakers’ Address and cut-
ting of the birthday cake by the
Motley Family.

In the City of Timpson
story in last week’s issue,
it stated that ‘the terms of
council members expiring
were Jill Hailey, Janelle
Baker and Ronnie Wolfe. ’
It should have read Jill
Hailey, Janelle Baker and
Elmer Ray Roberts.
