Bible Notes
By Mark Sloan, Minister, Carthage Church of Christ
QUESTION:
Dear Bro. Mark, when the
Bible teaches that God forgives
sin, does not all sins have been
forgiven? Also, can we be for-
given of sins that are committed
against persons who are now
dead? M.S.. Seymour. Texas
The Bible teaches that Christ
Jesus died for our sins. “He was
delivered up for our trespasses,
and was raised for our justifica-
tion.” (Rom. 4: 25). The apostle
Paul, even after he had helped put
people to death (Acts 26: 10), was
forgiven: “I was before a blas-
phemer, and a persecutor, and in-
jurious: howbeit I obtained mercy
... Christ Jesus came into the
world to save sinners, of whom I
am chief.” (I Tim. 1: 13-15). Re-
gardless of the sin, if one will
come to Jesus Christ in genuine
repentance, his sins will be for-
given. Christ is able to FORGIVE!
“Wherefore also he is able to
save to uttermost them that draw
near unto God through him, see-
ing he never liveth to make inter-
cession for them.” (Heb. 7: 25).
Surely, if it is possible, repen-_

Tenaha First United Methodist
Church met Sunday, January 26.
The regular service times on
Sunday are Sunday School 10:00
am and Worship 10:45 am. The
introit sung by the choir was
“There’s Just Something About
That Name”. The hymns for the
day were “Rock of Ages”,
“Standing on The Promises”,
“Sweet By and By” and “Softly
and Tenderly, Jesus Is Calling”.
The Special Music was “Man-
sion on a Hilltop”. The sermon
was from Mark 1:14- 20.
We had lots of visitors. Maggie
and Gene Casto came. They had
cancelled the sermon at Tennes-
see due to the low attendance.
Charles Peddy is again visiting
with the Bowers family. George
Bowers welcomed the Bogart
family (hope I got all the names
correct) - Dilbert & Opal Roberts
from Junction, Tommy Gaston
from Junction, Roy & Barbara
Kinnison from Seminole - Jo Lyn
& Ellen & Angela Williams from
Tenaha and several other regu-
lars in the congregation are all
related. . Seems like they were
having a family reunion.
The Ladies met on Tuesday
mornings. They are discussing
having a garage sale. They are
considering having it in a loca-
tion besides the church. When
tance will
cause us to
try to
“make
things
right” with
any that we
have
wronged.
Zaccheus
told the
Lord Jesus, “The half of my
goods I give to the poor: and if I
have wrongfully exacted aught
of any man, I restore fourfold.”
(Luke 19: 8). That is what the
right attitude will do! If you have
stolen from someone, repen-
tance will lead you to restore it
and apologize. As we “confess
our sins” to God, (I John 1: 9) so
should we “confess” (apolo-
gize) to people that we have
wronged. But, it is not possible
to undo what we have done,
genuine repentance will still
bring the forgiveness of the
Lord. This is true even if the per-
son that we have wronged is
dead.
God Bless.
the ladies complete this year’s
quilt we hope to put it on display
at local businesses. We want ev-
eryone to see it and have the op-
portunity to buy raffle tickets.
The Computer Lab is available
for use or instruction by appoint-
ment by members of the commu-
nity. The only reason for making
an appointment is the church is
not left unlocked. Contact Rev.
Jerry Burnette at 248-2481 or at
the church 248-2246. The Tenaha

Breakfast will be at 7:30am on
Sunday, February 2nd. The men
really enjoy the food and the fel-
lowship at these breakfasts. The
City of Tenaha will be celebrat-
ing its 117th birthday on F ebruary
2nd at 2:00pm at the First Baptist
Church.
Wednesday, February 5th, there
will be a meeting of the Council
on Ministries at 6:00pm. followed
by the monthly church business
meeting at 6:30 pm.
Wednesday, February 12th, will
be a covered dish fellowship. We
all need to start planning what to
cook and start inviting members
of our life and community.
We have a growing prayer list
for members of our congregation,
The First United Methodist
worship service was at 10:45 a.m.
Sunday with a small number in
attendance. We know where two
or more are gathered God is with
us. We pray for better weather
and less illness so our atten-
dance will improve. Rev. Loe al-
ways has a great message pre-
pared and those who miss it are
really missing a blessing.
Our church is alive and work-
their families, friends and mem-
bers of the community. Anyone
may be added or removed from
the list simply by a request to
our pastor, Brother Jerry
Burnette. The PRAYER LIST is
printed on the back of each
week’s bulletin. Nathan Cayton
(Pam and Jerry’s brother-in-law)
for heart problems as well as
Margie Rush (Pam’s mother) due
to a heart attach. Both are home
and needing to follow their
physician’s instructions. If you
did not attend church for any
reason but would like a copy of
the bulletin contact Brother
Jerry Burnette at the parsonage
or the church. Once again I want
to start to create a church direc-
tory. I like the one Tennessee
Presbyterian Church prints for
its members. I would like to get
every members name, mailing
address, 911 address (if differ-
ent), e-mail address, and tele-
phone number. I will try to print
a draft of the information I cur-
rently have for the February fel-
lowship. That will give people
the opportunity to review the in-
fonnation for errors. I would like
to list the active members as well
as associate members. Tennes-
see United Methodist Church
has been having very small con-
gregations. A lot of the ab-
ing and we need you to come
share our blessing. Our MYF
meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
We are not professional musi-
cians with fine tuned voices but
we are dedicated to making a joy-
ful noise and we practice every
Wednesday at 6 :00 p.m. We will
be looking forward to the oppor-
tunity to welcome you into our
choir and our fellowship on Sun-
day at 10:45 a.m.

What is a Minister, his duties,
and responsibility in and to the
congregation where he works
and worships? First a minister is
a faithful child of God, bom of
water and the Spirit. He has a spe-
cial talent for teaching. He does
not need to have any special
education, or be a so-called or-
dained minister as men would call
it. He is ordained of God to teach
the gospel. The Bible uses
teacher, prophet, and servant in-
terchangeably. We will all agree
that the Apostles were preach-
ers. They all came from different
walks of life; from fishermen to
tax collectors and a physician.
Their actions and teachings are
recorded for us, that we may un-
derstand the mysteries of the
gospel.Eph. 3:3-5, “How that by
revelation he made known unto
me the mystery; (as I wrote afore
in few words, where when you
read, ye may understand my
knowledge in the mystery of
Christ.) Which in other ages was
not made known unto the sons
of men, as it is now revealed unto
his holy Apostles and prophets
by the Spirit.” The minister
therefore is a man who studies. 2
Tim. 2:15, “Study to show thy-
self approved unto God, a work-
man that needeth not be
ashamed, rightly dividing the
word of truth.” He need not have
excellency of speech.”
1 Cor. 2:1, “And I brethren,
when I cam to you, came not with
excellency of speech or of wis-
dom, declaring unto you the tes-
timony of God.” 1 Cor. 14:4-5, “He
that speaketh in an unknown
tongue edifieth himself; but he
that prophesieth edifieth the
Church.” So the minister must
speak in words that the audience
can understand.Most important
he must bring no other gospel.
Gal. 1:6-8, “I marvel that ye are
so soon removed from him that
called you into the grace of Christ
unto another gospel: which is not
another; but there be some that
trouble you, and would pervert
the gospel of Christ. But though
we, or an angel from heaven,
preach any other gospel unto
you than that which we have
preached unto you, let him be
accursed.” Therefore, we all must
study to rightly divide the word.
I Thess. 5:21, “Prove all things;
hold fast to that which is good.”
Then if the minister teaches er-
ror, he will appreciate being
shown his error so he can cor-
rect his error.’’Last, some mem-
bers are under the impression the
preacher is to do all the visiting,
correcting those who are in er-
ror. Pure religion is for all Chris-
tians. James 1:27, “Pure religion
and undefiled before God and the
Father is this, To visit the father-
less and widows in their afflic-
tions and keep himself unspot-
ted from the world.”
SOUNDS OF SWING TO PERFORM HOMECOMING DANCE
To celebrate its 55th anniversary, Panola College has booked the
17-piece “Sounds of Swing” band to perform at their Homecoming
Dance onFebruary 8, at 8:00 p.m. in the Ballroom. “The ‘Sounds of
Swing’ play music of the big band era that is great for dancing,” said
Van Patterson, Director of Institutional Advancement. “Last spring
they played a tribute to area veterans before a standing room only
crowd. Many in the audience got out of their seats during the per-
formance to dance in a small area in front of the stage,” said Patterson.
The dance will be held from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. in the Panola
College Ballroom. Tickets are $10 each for adults and $5 each for
students. After 5 attire is recommended for those planning to attend
the dance. All funds collected from ticket sales and donations will
be used to help purchase new musical instruments for the Panola
College Band Department. To reserve tickets, please call the Office
of Institutional Advancement at 903-693-2029. All current and former
faculty, staff, students, and friends of Panola College are also in-
vited to attend the Alumni Association meeting on Saturday Febru-
ary 8, at 4:30 p.m. in the Panola College Student Center. Alumni
Association dues are $20 per individual or couple. Half of all dues
collected are added to the Panola College Alumni Endowed Scholar-
ship. The meeting will be followed by dinner in the College Cafeteria
at 5:00 p.m. This will be a great opportunity for alumni to reunite and
renew old friendships in a casual and relaxing atmosphere. Dress is
casual and tickets for the meal can be purchased at the door. At 6:00
p.m., the Panola College Fillies will begin play against Jacksonville
College in the Arthur Johnson Gym. At half time, the Homecoming
King and Queen Coronation will take place and at 8:00 p.m., the
Ponies will take on Jacksonville College. “We invite everyone to
come out and join the fim,” said Patterson. “The Fillies and Ponies
always play hard and should do well against Jacksonville, and of
course the ‘Sounds of Swing’ always put on a great performance.
Make plans now to join us on February 8th to celebrate Panola
College’s 55th anniversary. Formore infonnation, call 903-693-2029”.
