All Time High la
Efforts To Save
Lives h Urged
Governor Price Daniel called
on Texans today to "strive for
an all-time high in their efforts
to sav.e lives in our states's hol-
iday traffic this year."
Following the Department of
Public Safety's estimate that
111 Texans would lose their
lives in the Christmas-New
Year's 12-day traffic rush the
Governor called on law enforce-
ment officials citizen traffic
safety groups publicity media
and "every automobile driver in
Texas" to center their attention
on saving lives during "one of
the deadliest seasons of every
year on our highways."
Only four times before has
the DPS estimate of Christmas
holiday deaths been greater
than the 111 predicted for this
year the Governor noted.
Two of these were in 1957 and
1958 when statewide crusades
for traffic safety helped reduce
the toll below the prediction.
Families Getting
Ready For Xmas
By Vivian H. Blair H D Agent
Williamson County
The time is here and every
family is involved or has been
in getting the household ready
for the various celebrations of
the season1 - '
Much of the preparation is
planned for children. And what
could be more suitable than
having children help with those
plans.
If you want to have a big
beautiful tree that the children
must not bother why not have
a little tree for the youngsters
to decorate and play with be-
fore the holiday. It will save
"wear and tear" on the family
Christmas tree and keep them
busy and happy for hours.
You might Use ordinary clip
clothes pins and spray them
gold for the little ones to fasten
decorations on the tree. Metal
foil pine cones berries (and
here's a good way to use cran-
berries) nuts and other un-
breakable materials which are
safe and easy to work with
make very good decorations for
the children. And there are al-
ways the chains made of color-
ed paper loops and strings of
pop corn.
Gift Suggestions
For Christmas
Your home freezer may very
well be a source of the best in
Christmas gifts. Why not give:
a package of frozen cookie
dough made by your favorite
recipe (tuck the recipe inside)
cakes homemade breads sea-
sonal fruits.
If some one on your list sews
you can find sewing aids that
make the perfect gift scissors
or pinking shears a shirt mark-
er cutting board or a conven-
ient sewing ljox.
If you sew some quick items
for gifts are aprons stoles
closet accessories and simple
table linens If you've shopped
the remnant counters through
the year you may have inter-
esting materials at little cost.
These are fine for doll clothes
too.
Books make ideal Christmas
gifts for friends and family
members alike. Choose the book
with the family in mind. They
might include good reference
books autobiographies "how-to-do"
books fiction historical
and religious books. Shop care-
fully if the book is for the smal-
ler members of the family. This
book should be true to life
wholesome and natural simple
and clearly written and illus-
trated. And surely it should be
attractive and durable. But do
remember to choose books for
a reason to fill an interest or
a need not aa a last minute
resort fn gift -giving.
The climate of Christmas in
most homes can be enriched
spiritually too. Reserve a place
in your home for some repre-
sentation of the real reason for
Christmas. A simple very nat-
ural arrangement of the nativi-
ty scene gives real meaning to
the most important of births
