WHAT SAITH THE SCRIPTURES ? San Augustine Church of Christ
One of the most intriguing
topics within God’s word per-
tains to physical death. What
happens when a person dies?
Where
does that
person
go? Un-
less we
know
what a
h u m a n
being is
we are not
in position
*to know
what happens when one dies. A
human is a composite being. He
is a dual being, composed of
both body and spirit. The physi-
cal body is derived from the dust
of the ground and back to the
dust it shall ultimately return
(Gen. 2:7; 3:19). The spirit or
soul is that imperishable aspect
of the human being that was cre-
ated in the very image of God
(Gen. 1:26; Matt. 10:28).
Death is defined in the Bible as
that which happens when the
body and soul are separated.
James states that “the body apart
from the spirit is dead” (Jms.
2:26). The basic meaning of
death, then, is “separation.”
Never does the Bible use death
in the sense of extinction, anni-
hilation, or cessation of one’s
existence. It is simply and solely
separation—separation of the
body (the flesh) and the spirit
(the immortal entity). Thus,
physical death is the condition
subsisting when the spirit is no
longer in the body. It must be
further appreciated that it is the
physical “body” that is said to
be “dead” and not the soul of
man.According to the atheist
when one dies as far as anyone
ever goes is the cemetery. The
end of all things is the grave. For
the one who believes the Bible
as God’s word, however, death
is merely a transition from this
earthly realm to one that is
wholly spiritual in nature. At
death the spirit departs the body
and goes back to God who gave
it (Eccl. 12:7). Eventually the
soul will be reunited with a res-
urrected “incorruptible” body
and every person will be as-

Have you noticed lately how
many people have cell ‘phones?
Almost everyone I know has
one. And it seems like those who
have them are always talking on
them.
In the cities where you see
people walking along the
streets, you often see people
talking on cell ‘phones as they
walk along. And in airports,
young and old have cell ‘phones
at their ears. Another thing I’ve
noticed is how many folks talk
on cell ‘phones while they are
driving. I’m in my car a lot and
as I’m driving, I notice how
many drivers are talking on their
cell ‘phones as they travel.
Maybe you’ve seen the same
thing. Lots of folks are seen
talking on cell ‘phones while
they’re driving.Sometimes I see
a car going a little slower than
the flow of traffic. Or, I may
see a car that’s veering to one
side or the other. Sure enough,
when I pass that car, the driver
will be talking on a cell ‘phone.
I heard the other day that some
states are considering banning
drivers from talking on cell
‘phones while driving because
law enforcement officials say
that talking on cell ‘phones is
causing lots of drivers to have
accidents.
Last week I was driving to
Lufkin for a meeting and it
seemed that most of the drivers
I passed were talking on cell
‘phones as they drove. Well, it
started me to thinking: Wouldn’t
it be nice if people talked to God
as much as they talked on their
cell ‘phones!
The Apostle Paul wrote in his
first letter to the Thessalonians
that we should “Rejoice always,
and pray without ceasing.” (1
Thessalonians 5: 16 - 17,
NRS V) “Pray without ceasing”
surely means that we should al-
ways be talking to God. We
should be in constant communi-
cation with God to praise him,
to ask forgiveness when we fail
him (or someone else), to thank
him for our blessings, and to
pray for our own and the needs
of others. We may run out of
things to talk about on a cell
‘phone, but we never run out of
things to say to God. I’m told
that constant use of a cell ‘phone
can get expensive; talking to
God costs nothing except our
time. Some people get “limited
free minutes” on a cell ‘phone;
everybody gets “unlimited free
minutes” to talk to God. Talk-
ing on a cell ‘phone while driv-
ing can cause an accident; talk-
ing to God while driving can
prevent an accident. In fact,
talking to God can prevent lots
of troubles both on and off the
road.
So the next time you see
someone on a cell ‘phone, use it
as a reminder to breathe a prayer
to God. He’s always ready to
talk to us and we don’t even need
a cell ‘phone to talk to our Heav-
enly Father. How good is that?
signed their eternal abode—
heaven or hell (Jno. 5:28-29). It
is too late to alter one’s eternal
destiny after death. The time to
be a dedicated, devoted child of
God is now while you are still
among the living. One apostle
says, “Be faithful, even to the
point of death, and I will give
you the crown of life” (Rev.
2:10). Every person now living
on earth will eventually die, un-
less the Lord returns first. What
one must do, then, is live faith-
fully as a Christian by doing
daily God’s divine will This
will determine whether we die
“in the Lord” or “in your sins”
(Jno. 8:24; Rev. 14:13).

Ephesians 6:5,
“Bondservants, be obedient to
those who are your masters ac-
cording to the flesh, with fear
and trembling, in sincerity of
heart, as to Christ. ”
In the Old Testament, if a He-
brew owned an
indentured ser-
mL vant who was
also a Hebrew,
J at the end of
—.1 six years, the
'■ " servant was to
^ be set free. But
Jm what if the ser-
I vant didn’t
^ want to be set
free? What if
he loved the master and had
prospered in his service? In such

a case, the master retained the
servant, branded him with a
small hole in his ear, and re-
tained him as a servant forever.
The servant became a
bondservant - a voluntary slave
of his master.
How many workers today
have a “boss” they love and un-
der whose oversight they have
prospered? The New Testament
allows for such a mutual admi-
ration experience by giving clear
instructions to both masters (em-
ployees) and servants (employ-
ees). For workers, the responsi-
bility is to work as if Jesus were
your immediate boss, as if He
signed your paychecks. Just as
we would be obedient to and re-
spectful of Christ, so Christian
workers should be obedient to
and respectful of their employ-
ers and bosses. It doesn’t mat-
ter what kind of boss you have.
Your responsibility to him or her
is the same: Serve as if Jesus’
name were on your boss’s door.
Martin Luther once stated, “A
dairy maid can milk cows to the
glory of God.” Have a great day!

tries is a non-profit, non-de-
nominational organization dedi-
cated to providing grocery relief
and financial support to commu-
nities throughout the United
States. The program began in
1994 with 34 families in Mon-
roe, Georgia (between Atlanta
and Athens), and has grown to
serve hundreds of thousands of
families every month across 32
states.Angel Food Ministries
crosses denominational lines
and has spread the good news
of the gospel of Christ through
salvation tracts that are placed
in each food order. Generally,
one unit of food assists in feed-
ing a family of four for about one
week or a single senior citizen
for almost a month. The food is
all the same high quality one
would purchase at a grocery
store. There are no second-hand
items, no damaged or out-dated
goods, no dented cans without
labels, no day-old breads and no
produce that is almost too ripe.
There are no applications to
complete or qualifications to
which participants must adhere.
Angel Food Ministries, like
most all other retail grocery
stores, also participates in the
U.S. Food Stamp program, us-
ing the Off-Line Food Stamp
Voucher system. Prayer requests
and Praise reports continue for
many individuals and families in
our community. T Karol Weeks
asked for prayers for her uncle’s
health as he battles with cancer.

cluded: 1 .Lauren - Ike & Chris’s
granddaughter, fell off a horse,
was unconcious & life flighted
to a hospital - no serious long
tenn injury. 2. Clark Partin back
