Tenaha City Council considers
plan to add space to HOPE Clinic
By Fran Partin
It was a beautiful sunny
day for the noon meeting
of the Tenaha
Businessmen’s Club this
previous Thursday. How-
ever, a cloud weighed
heavily over the member-
ship and the entire com-
munity as we were still
realing from the tragic ac-
cident which happened
early Tuesday morning as
the Cooks / Boykins chil-
dren waited for the bus to
bring them to school.
Brother Russ Atwood of
the Tenaha Baptist Church
brought the membership
up to date on the progress
of 14 year old Danielle
Cooks. As of this writing
she remains in Tyler await-
ing surgery for her broken
hip. She has no head inju-
ries. However, her injuries
do include a lacerated kid-
ney, a collapsed lung, and
the broken hip. She re-
mains in stable condition
and a good prognosis is
given for her recovery.
This brave young girl did
everything humanly pos-
sible to get her niece and
nephew, Nathan and
JaLyke out of harm’s way.
However, they did not sur-
vive their extensive inju-
ries. Brother Atwood fur-
ther commended all the
schools in the county, as
they have all offered coun-
selors. The community
and school has pulled to-
gether to support this fam-
ily and students with
prayers and both spiritual
and physical needs. Brother
Atwood also mentioned a
program which will be held
at the First Baptist Church
and directed by Dr. John
Babler. The program,
“Parenting in the Mist of
Crisis”, will address ways
of helping children through
such tragedies. A definite
schedule will be announced
at a later date.Continuing
with the meeting, Mayor
Bowers mentioned that
both water tanks are on line
and functioning. The el-
evated tank needs painting.
The HOPE Clinic has ap-
proached the City Council
with a request to assist
them with more physical
space to house equip-
ments, records, and
adminstrational needs. At
present, the Council is con-
sidering a plan to add to the
Clinic building and moving
the present gazebo. This is
simply in the planning
phase and is not in stone.
An estimate of cost and a
floor plan must first be
developed. The dental clinic
is still on go with the HOPE
admistrators working hard
to gather funds. Bo Mor-
ris reported the school is
changing daily. August 25
is still the projected date for
the facility to be completed.
Early voting for school
board and city officials be-
gins Monday, April 27.
Early voting will be held at
City Hall for council mem-
bers and at the Tenaha Ad-
ministrative Building for the
school board. The actual
day of voting is Saturday,
May 9. In closing, as a per-
sonal note, this writer can-
not conclude this article
without stating how proud
I am of living in Tenaha and
knowing its citizens. The
outpouring of each and ev-
ery person involved with
the tragic loss we had this
week is remarkable. I wit-
nessed persons from ev-
ery religion, race, and walk
of life step up to assist in
any way possible. The
school immediately rallied,
the churches, citizens in
and out of the community,
whether they knew the
families or not were
present daily to provide
food, money, clothing,
prayers, words of encour-
agement, and spiritual
guidance. We are a little
town but we have people
with big hearts and a lot
of love and compassion.
Tenaha’s Hope Clinic has under gone several “face lifts”since it became the Hope Project has
expanded its services and needs extra space to house equipments, records and administration needs.
The city council is considering a plan to move the gazebo on the right side of the clinic to facilitate
the space.

Timpson ISD encourages safety among school buses
Transportation Direc-
tor Perry Rather, bus driv-
ers and staff are working
to ensure the safety of all
Timpson I.S.D. students.
The Elementary School
staff has implemented a
new parent pick-up pro-
cedure that has improved
the safety of students.
Mrs. Mary Lynn Tinkle
stated, “We appreciate the
patience and cooperation
parents have shown as
this procedure has been put
in place.”
She also is reminding all
drivers that McLawchlin
Street is on-way traffic only
between 3:00 p.m. and
4:00 p.m. All drivers need
to come to a complete stop
at the stop sign on
McLawchlin Street. This is
especially important be-
cause students us this as a
crosswalk.
Transportation director,
Perry Rather, met with bus
drivers this week to re-
view bus safety rules.
Drivers are assigning seat-
ing charts for students
which will improve safety
and bus discipline.
All drivers are reminded
that when a bus’s yellow
lights are flashing, cars
must slow down and stop.
Red flashing lights indicate
drivers should come to a
complete stop. Drivers
must never pass a school
bus when the yellow or red
lights are on. We are ask-
ing all drivers to be award
of buses especially in the
morning and afternoon in
order to ensure the safety
of our children.
Another item Mrs.
Tinkle has mentioned is that
the Timpson I.S.D. Board
of Trustees want your in-
put in the selection of the
new superintendent. A sur-
vey is currently available
at www.timpsonisd.com
or a paper copy is avail-
able at the Timpson I.S.D.
Central Office.
Your answers to the
survey questions will help
form a profile and inter-
view questions to be used
in the hiring process.
Arrow Educational Ser-
vices, Inc. is conducting
the superintendent search.
