TENAHA—how sad to
hear of Rodney Christian’s
death. He was a favorite of
ours here in the office. Such
a very good person. He was
numbered among my mem-
bers of the Buzzard Roost
group and I always enjoyed
seeing him there; he was out-
going and jovial. Our sympa-

COURT TALES *

I had a visit with Kimberly
Vail of the District Clerk’s
office. It was lunch time and
she was holding the fort.
Kimberly is married and has
three sons. She lives in
Shelbyvile. A nice lady and
pretty, too. She was sitting at
a front desk, but her usual spot
is one facing the wall!
Talked to Becky Shriever
of Dist. Clerk Allison
Harbison’s office. They have
been busy! She said all was
well with those in the office.
Allison looked so pretty in her
blue outfit.
Upstairs, I spent about
thirty minutes with Carolyn
Golden and County Auditor
Tracy Strong. They had

ventured to the Chinese
Restaurant for lunch with
Allison Harbison. Said it was
good.
Jackie Soto celebrated her
birthday on Cinco de Mayo
and we hope it was a happy
time. (I really did mispel Cinco
(Cinque), but I had a little help
there from one who is
supposed to know.
Said hi to Nina Hughes.
Hope all in the tax office is
betther this week.
While waiting for my ride,
I went shopping at Beall’s.
Said hi to April Moore from
Tenaha. She works there and
attends college, too. She is a
smart girl and pretty, too.
See you next week.

Looks like rain and I be-
lieve it is forecast. My yard is
a blaze of colors. I have roses
of every color, iris’, amaryllis,
cosmos, petunias and will soon
have angel trumpets and con-
federate roses...my how I love
flowers. I just know that God
has a glorious garden in
heaven and I do hope He lets
me work in it. I never got
“digging in the dirt” out of my
system as a child. We also
have cantelope and water-
melon plants with runners on
them and our peach trees are
loaded as well as our figs and
pear tree. We planted all these
trees with the exception of the
pear when we moved here in
1996 so to see them produce
fruit is a special blessing to us.
My sister in Tyler gave
Marilyn and I some tame
blackberries last year and
mine are loaded with berries.
They are small and may take
another year before they get
bigger. The old timey 3 sister
climbing rose I have was prob-
ably here in the original home
place. It is growing up our
trees on the back side of our
pond. We planted a vine or two
beside a big stump in the
middle of our yard several
years ago and if you are out
this way check it —it is hugh
and solid pink. Enough of my
yard and garden...guess you
can tell where my heart is, it’s
not inside the house.
We went to Mountain
View, Arkansas Friday and
came home Sunday evening.
My son, Max and his wife,
Lori flew to Little Rock and
rented a car and came over
Friday. We stay in some su-
per cabins, walking distance
from the square. Max plays a
mean harmonica and the lo-
cal musicians as well as visit-

we all sang...My sister, Betty
Rhodes, went with us. We
were out at a old country store
called Melons and the man
who owns it plays with a group
in a small theatre..they are
called The River Rats. Moon
Mullins plays with them. He
asked Max to play with them
Saturday night and he did.. .He

was beaming and I was just
sitting quietly
observing...YEAH!!! Who
knows me? I was standing up
saying “That’s my boy”...he is
good and we did have a fine
time. Just wish my other son
could have been there as he
plays guitar and sings but
there will be other trips. He
has a rather large family and
they are planning a BIG wed-
ding for my granddaughter on
June 19th and the two sons
had a big dinner for their Mom
on Mother’s Day. This is a
busy month for us. Betty’s
grandson, Joel is getting mar-
ried in Huntsville on the 22nd

Friends are having a birthday
party for me in Crockett on
the 25th, our grandson gradu-
ates on the 28th and they are
having a graduation party on
the 27th in Houston.
Do you remember May
Day. Used to there was a big
celebration in Galveston and
the beaches were open and
swimming started. At grade
school we had May Pole
dances. All the pretty colored
streamers from a pole and we
would dance around it. Our
Mom would not let us go bare-
foot until May 1st...guess it
was supposed to be warm
enough then. We lived in
Wright City when Marilyn was
born. Our Dad worked in the
Oil Field. Our house had a big
oil drain in the back which had
a plug in it. My Mother was
soo afraid we were going to
drown in that oil that she
would go out and pull that plug
every time they drained oil in

it. We never got put in jail so I
suppose they did not know or
did not care.
The following will make you
stop and count your
blessings.... SCARS
Some years ago on a hot
May day a little boy decided
to go for a swim in the old
swimming hole behind his
house. In a hurry to dive into
the cool water, he ran out the
back door, leaving shoes, etc.
by the door. He flew into the
water, not realizing that as he
swam toward the middle of
the pond, an alligator was
swimming toward him. His
Mother was in the house and
looking out the window saw
the two as they got close to-
gether. In utter fear, she ran
toward the water, yelling to
her son as loudly as she could.
Hearing her voice, the little
boy got scared and made a U-
turn to swim to his mother. It
was too late. Just as he
reached her, the alligator
snatched his legs. That began
a tug-of-war between alliga-
tor and his Mother. The
Mother was too passionate to
let go but the alligator also
hung on. A farmer driving by,
heard her screams, jumped
from his truck, took aim and
shot the alligator. After weeks
and weeks in the hospital, the
little boy survived. His legs
extremely scarred by the vi-
cious attack, his arms had
deep scratches where his
mother’s fingernails dug into
his flesh in her effort to hang
on to the son she loved.
A newspaper reporter
intervied the boy and asked if
he would show him his scars.
The boy lifted his pant legs and
then with obvious pride he said
to the reporter, “But look at
my arms. I have great scars
here too because my Mom
wouldn’t let go”. Some of us
have scars too. Not from alli-
gators but scars from our past
and some are because God
has refused to let go. In the
midst of our struggles, He;s
been there holding on to you.
Sometimes we foolishly wade
into dangerous situations, not
knowing what lies ahead. The
swimming pool of life is filled
with dangers from the
enemy...that’s when the tug-
of-war begins and if we have
scars of His love on our arms,
be very grateful. He did not
and will not ever let you go.
Never judge another person’s
scars, because you don’t know
how they got them...just see
them as Jesus does and love
them just the way they are.
Till next time...God
Bless...Martha
