passed away over the years
while they were enrolled in
Timpson High School. Ame-
morial marker is planned and
they need those names to place
on it. You may contact these
ladies at the school, or leave
the names at the Timpson-
Tenaha News office. They
will also be forming a com-
mittee to decide on the par-
ticular memorial to honor
these students.
EASTERN STAR
Members of the Eastern
Star met Monday evening at
the Timpson Masonic Lodge
to plan the upcoming institut-
ing of the new chapter on June
24, 2006. Eighteen were
present for dinner and fellow-
ship. We are excited about
having the Grand Officers and
other chapters here. All mem
bers are invited to come and
be a part of this adventure
with us. If you have a Masonic
affiliation and would like to
join or if you belong to else-
where and wish to duel with

Timpson FFA Hits Home Run

The 2006 Shelby County
Fair was a great success and
Timpson FFA hit a home run.
This was the first year for the
County Fair to include all ani-
mal species resulting in a very
successful show and sale. The
top 8 animals of each species
sold in the premium auction on
Saturday night which grossed
a total sales of $43,000.
Timpson FFA members
cleared the bases with hits like
the Grand Champion Market
Goat exhibited by Ian
Mitchell, the Reserve Cham-
pion goat shown by Colton
McSwain, the Grand Cham-
pion Beef Heifer of Macy Nix
and the Grand Champion
County Bred Heifer shown by
Chaylon Mackey. Timpson
loaded the bases with 20 stu-
dents participating in this
year’s fair. Twelve students
which exhibited market ani-
mals with 10 making the pre-
mium sale and receiving
$11,800. Erica Adams placed
5th in the market rabbit show,
while Greg Hailey placed 6th
in the market swine show. The
Market Goat Show was the
largest division of this year’s
fair and Timpson placed 5
goats in the top 8. Champion
and Reserve Champion goat
went to Ian Mitchell and
Colton McSwain. Camrron
Miller placed 3rd, Chelsea Pate
6th, and Kimberly Michonski
placed 7th. In the Steer Show,
James Wolfe placed 4th and
was the 2nd highest placing
county bred steer. Katie Bush
placed 5th and Chaylon
Mackey placed 6th and had the

well at UIL
Seven THS students earned
1st through 6th place in the
annual UIL meet held at
SFASU last Tuesday. Ap-
proximately 45 students en-
tered in the UIL contests from
math to science to speaking
and writing.
Students earning medals in-
cluded: Ashley Whittington,
1st place social studies;
Kearsten Clark 2nd place so-
cial studies, and the social
studies team, 1st place. The
team members other than
Ashley and Kearsten were
Roen Mitchell and Joseph
Hunt. Mrs. Cindy Rhodes is
their coach. Rebekah Kimzey
placed 1st in poetry reading;
Katelyn Oliver placed 3rd in
prose reading. NaShawn
Crawford placed 6th in poetry
reading and Julie Pipes placed
6th in prose reading. Mrs. Pat
Crawford is their coach.

spelling. April Whittington
placed 3rd in news writing.

ceived a belt buckle for Cham-
pion Jr. Showmanship.

Champion County Bred Heifer
and won a belt buckle for the
Sr. Showmanship. James
Wolfe exhibited the Champion
Exotic Heifer while Katie
Bush, Ryan McDonald,
Charlsey Mackey and Roen
Mitchell all placed in their re-
spective classes. Katie Bush
also received a belt buckle for
the Silver Stick Award given
each year to a student who has
overcome adversity. Katie
broke her leg during a softball
game earlier in the year. Con-
gratulations to the Timpson
FFA team on an All-Star per-
formance at the 2006 Shelby
County Fair.

Ann Morris Tells How To
“Publish Family Folklore” at
TAGHS Spring Seminar

Ann Morris, local historian
and Creator of the East Texas
Oral History Archive at the
LaGrone Family History Cen-
ter, Carthage, Texas, will
present information on “Pub-
lishing Family Folklore: A
Group Effort” at the Spring
Genealogy Seminar in
Timpson. This seminar is
slated to benefit the Save Old
Timpson Newspapers Project,
and will be held Sat., April 22,
2006, 9:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at
the First Christian Church in
Timpson, Texas.
As a member of the Panola
College staff, Ann Morris has
led students in their efforts to
extract local folklore from ac-
counts in newspapers and other
old documents. She has worked
with her family to gather infor-
mation and present it in unique
ways for the enjoyment of
present and future generations.

steps her family took to get
their “folklore” compiled and
recorded.
Two other speakers and
TAGHS members will cover
other topics of interest.
Michael J. Vaughn, a 6th
Generation Texan whose life-
long love of genealogy has led
to extensive research, travel,
and frequent speaking engage-
ments will share “Alternatives
to Census Research.”
Allison Harbison, Shelby
County Clerk, will tell us
“What’s New in Shelby
County Research.” And,
TAGHS Members will share
ideas for photo organization
and preservation that features
both the photos and the stories
behind the photos.

the Lonestar 4H placed seventh
with his market rabbits and 6th in
the premium sale; Ashlee Ray of
Tenaha 4H placed 10th; and
Heather Bridges of Tenaha with
Lonestar 4H placed eleventh.

Abuse Prevention
Month
The Shelby County
Children’s Advocacy Center
will have an Open House and
Dedication Ceremony today,
Thursday, April 6th from 4
p.m. - 6 p.m. County Judge
Floyd “Dock” Watson will
proclaim the month of April to
be Child Abuse Prevention
Month. State Representative
Elect Wayne Christian will
also be here in support of the
program. The colorful new in-
terview room will be dedicated
in memory of Pam Baldwin.
The room has been adopted by
the ladies ministry group of
Pleasant Grove Missionary
Baptist Church in Timpson
and named “Pam’s Room”.
One of the two new waiting
areas will be dedicated in
memory of Sandi Gardner, a
victim of child molestation,
and named “Sandi’s Garden
Room”.
In 2005, the Advocacy Cen-
ter became an Associate Mem-
ber of the National Alliance for
Children and received grant
monies that allowed for reno-
vation and expansion of the fa-
cility. With this funding, the
Center was able to make the
building handicap accessible
and add a new interview room,
monitor/conference room, two
waiting areas, two offices and
a restroom. It also allowed for
new furnishings and equip-
ment.
