Teachings from the Bible
Dwayne Sowell, Min._Timpson Church of Christ
Love and Faith
The basic of salvation is
Love. John 3:16 “For God so
loved the world, that he gave his
only begotten Son, that whoso-
ever believeth in him should not
perish, but have ever lasting
life.” But to believe on Him is
to have faith in what he com-
manded and to obey.
James 2:17-20 “Even so
faith, if it hath not works is dead,
being alone. Yea a man may say,
Thou has faith, and I have
works: show me thy faith with-
out thy works, and I will show
thee my faith by my works.
Thou believest that there is one
God; thou doest well: the devils
also believed, and tremble. But
wilt thou know, O vain man, that
faith without works is dead?”
Matt. 5:16 “Let your light so
shine before men, that they may
see your good works, and glo-
rify your Father which is in
heaven.” If you have faith
enough to have followed his
command to: Acts 2:38. “Then
Peter said unto them, Repent,
and be baptized every one of
you in the name of Jesus Christ
for the remission of sins, and ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy
Ghost.”
Rom. 6:3-4 “Know ye not,
that so many of us as were bap-
tized into Jesus Christ were
baptized into his death? There-
fore we are buried with him by
baptism into death that like as
Christ was raised up from the
dead by the glory of the F ather,
even so we also should walk in
newness of life.” Rom. 6:16
“Know ye not, that to whom ye
yield yourselves servants to
obey, his servants ye are;
whether of sin unto death, or of
obedience unto righteousness?”
Matt. 28:18-20 “And Jesus
came and spake unto them, say-
ing, All power is given unto me
in heaven and in earth. Go ye
therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Ghost: Teaching
them to observe all things what-
soever I have commanded you:
and, lo, I am with you always,
even unto the end of the world.”
The biblical definition of
love: 1 Cor. 13:4-8 “Charity
(love) suffereth long, and is
kind; charity envieth not; char-
ity vaunteth not itself, is not
puffed up, Doth not behave it-
self unseemly, seeketh not her
own, it not easily provoked,
thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not
in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the
truth; Beareth all things, hopeth
all things, endureth all things.
Charity never faileth: but where
there be prophesies, they shall
fail; whether there be tongues,
they shall cease; whether there
be knowledge, it shall vanish
away.” Jesus said: John 14:15
“If you love me, keep my com-
mandments.”
Love and faith go hand in
hand. Do you have enough faith
in Christ to keep his command-
ments? Remember the inspired
scriptures gives us our only way
of knowing what the command-
ments of Jesus Christ are; and
we find we need works to go
with out faith. James 2:17
“Even so faith, if it hath not
works, is dead, being alone.”
Today I saw..

mind all the lovely things she
is learning to dream of, and
I have learned to forget.”

Acts 4:12, “Nor is there sal-
vation in any other, for there
is no other name under heaven
given
among men
by which
we must be
saved.”
I have
had the
privilege of
traveling to
England on
two differ-
ent occasions. In the Center of
England, just northwest of
London sits Warwick Castle.
The first Earl of Warwick,
Henry De Newburgh, occu-
pied the castle from 1088 to
1119, and the current Earl,
Guy Greville, took up the resi-
dence in 1996. Mr. Greville is
the forty-second Earl of
Warwick, receiving the title af-
ter more than 900 years of
careful succession. The En-
glish are famous for their lords,
earls, and barons and the idea
of nobility as a birthright.
Now, that might work in the
kingdom of Britain, but it
doesn’t work, however, in the
kingdom of God. Why? Be-
cause spiritual legitimacy is a
personal decision upon obedi-
ence to the Word of God, not a
birthright. No one is saved be-
cause his parents or grandpar-
ents were saved. In fact, Jesus
told a parable about five fool-
ish virgins who failed to pro-
vide oil for their lamps. When
they sought to borrow oil from
others, they were refused. Oil
represents the Holy Spirit, who
is given to individuals only by
God upon obedience to God’s
plan of salvation found in Acts
2:38. Here is a question to pon-
der today: are you resting in a
spiritual pedigree falsely be-
lieving that because your par-
ents and/or grandparents
where ‘in church’ that you
have an automatic ticket to
heaven? Regardless of whom
your parents are or were, you
are not a Christian until you
are adopted by Jesus Christ.
The famous evangelist Billy
Sunday said, “The tragedy of
my life is that although I’ve led
thousands of people to Jesus
Christ, my own sons are not
saved.” To understand more

WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL*? Tom Bart he/, Arcadia Church of Christ
Several years ago I heard an
interview on the “Today’s
Show” by David Martman with
Rona Barrett. He stated that she
was a very suc-
cessful person in
her vocation.
But, she states
that she had not
always been suc-
cessful. In fact,
she stated that at on time she
even tried to take her life she
was so down on herself and the
world. She also is a victim of
muscular dysterphy. At the age
of nine, her doctors informed
her parents that she wouldn’t
live very long. She became a
subject of many new medica-
tions. Her disease is in an ar-
rested state. Climbing the ‘suc-
cess ladder’ involves a lot of
hard work, patience, endurance,
time, and backbone. The climb-
ing is usually very difficult, with
many pitfalls, and one must take
on step at a time. Very few have
skipped steps or jumped from
the bottom rung to the top rung.
Only a very small percent of the
populas have everything handed
to them on a “silver platter”.
Few have skipped steps or
jumped to the top over night.
Several have made it to the top
but were unable to stay. Some
have even fallen to the bottom,
never to return again.
We dream about being suc-
cessful in our endeavors and we
can be. Each holds the key to
make his or her dreams become
a reality, that is, if they’re within
reason. The Prodigal Son could
have stay home and enjoyed his
blessings, but he chose to go an-
other way. He chose to do HIS
OWN THING and wound up
with the “pigs”. He finally
“came to himself’. He could
have stayed with the pigs, but
chose to go back to the Father.
When we “come to ourselves”
we can accomplish almost any-
thing we want to accomplish in
life.When asked advice on her
success Rona Barrett gave four
things that she considered im-
portant to her success. They are
worthy statements and would be
good to commit to memory. They
are also necessary to live as suc-
cessful Christians.
1. Love work.
2. Be concerned about and
interested in people.
3. Realize that people are
human and make mistakes.
4. Stick with your vocation -
- endurance.
Anyone can quit! Anyone can
refuse to get up when knocked
down. Successful people don’t
quit and when set-backs come,
they just try a little harder. Any-
one can wallow in self pitty or
try to live in the “Yester-days”
or “Yester-years”, but if you re-
ally want to be successful in any
endeavor, REMEMBER, YOU
HOLD YOUR DESTINY IN
YOUR HANDS! You can fol-
low the crowd to do evil, or
YOU can lead the crowd in do-
ing GOOD. The decision is
yours.
