Root Rot Now
College Station To reduce
"dying-off" or root rot a cotton
farmer needs to know when dry
weather is expected for 10 days
to 2 weeks. When dry weather
follows deep plowing root rot
-will be reduced says Harlan E.
gmith extension plant patholo-
gist. Soil should be plowed 6 to 18
inches deep with a disk or mold-
board type. The drying of the
soil that follows helps to kill the
root rot fungus. Deep plowing
and drying helps to kill old cot-
ton roots of susceptible weeds
that harbor the root rot fun-
gus. Deep plowing plus the turning
under of a large tonnage of old
crop straw stalks or leaves will
give added insurance against
rootrot Smith continues. The
deep plowing and turning under
of organic matter can often be
done in one operation. Grain
sorghum small grains slovers
and winter peas where adapted
.are often turned under to supply
organic matter. Cotton burs
have also been used. The organ-
ic matter must be turned under
deep in order to be effective
against root rot the following
season.
Following the deep plowing
rain may occur before the soil
drys. When this happens the
deep plowing should be repeated
or a resistant crop should be
planted explains Smith. Crop
rotation in itself will not reduce
root rot. However a rotation
using deep plowing and burying
of organic matter will reduce
root rot.
