Cotton Growing;
Watch For Insects
By V. C. Marshall
Cotton made good growth and
fruited well last veek. Insects
are not at an injurious level in
most fields checked through
Saturday morning. There has
been an increase in weevil and
bollworm Infestations over the
previous weeks with infesta
tions at injurious levels in some
fields.
Some farmers started late
season control last week arid
many more may need to do so.
this week. '
Boll weevil infestation rang
ed from 5-10 last week and
bollworm averaged about 2-3.
Treatment should start if 15-25
per cent or more weevil punc-
tures are found. Four to five
bollworms with a few eggs per
100 squares would be the right
time to start treatment for boll-
worms. With . continued showers the
bollworm and weevil should be
checked closely and start late
season control programs where
injurious infestations occur.
The cotton fleahopper ranged
from about 1 to 5 last week
and they might still be a prob
lem m younger cotton.
Light cotton aphid and spider
mite infestations were observed
in some fields but seemed to bo
on the decrease.
In earlier planted fields con-
trol of bollweevils and boll-
worms should be considered at
the same time.

SHOUtD GOVERNMENT BE MAN'S SERVANT OR MASTER?

I-
Americans believe:
Government should
be strong enough to protect the
people from aggression foreign and
domestic but not strong enough to
regiment them. The law should
create and maintain the conditions
under which the people are free
from monopolistic restraint to plan .

selves to the full measure- of -their -Individual
abilities. Americans
believe that a strong nation is
based fundamentally on strong
self-reliant citizens. .
Communists believe;
Government should
be strong enough to dictate the
work efforts of the" people and
channel them into the activities
which in the sole opinion of gov-
ernment will best advance the
security and welfare of the state.
The individual is of insignificant
importance except as a member of
a disciplined mass. The law there-
ore must suppress individuality;
Communists believe that a strong
nation must be composed of servile
regimented citizens.
