First Beachside house
gets tax abatement
BY BRANDI G. WEST
Palacios Beacon
Anticipation has lingered
for years but the wait for
construction at Beachside
Development is over.
Tax abatements were
approved by Palacios City
Council at last weeks’ Special
City Council Meeting to
include all of Palacios city
limits into the re-investment
zone.
This was immediately
followed by a public hearing to
discuss the sole tax abatement
agreement with Chipman
Construction LTD jump-
starting construction at 3441
Beachside Blvd.
This initial tax abatement
agreement with Chipman
Construction LTD will
hopefully be the first of many
agreements by individuals
either interested in building
new homes or purchasing in
the re-investment zone.
Anyone may apply for a tax
abatement agreement and each
application will be followed by
a public hearing.
To qualify the structure
must be a taxable property
within city limits and one
must apply for the abatement
prior to the commencement
of construction. The property
must be a creation of new
value to be an eligible property
(outliving the duration of the
abatement). The appraisal
value of the property must not
be less than $75,000.
All interested individuals
contact City Hall at 972-3605.
Palacios Coastal
Educational Pavilion
City Council also approved
the contract not to exceed
$100,000 and subject to
adjustment (to be paid while
work is in progress) with
Randall-PorterfieldArchitects,
Inc. for Phase 1 of the Palacios
Coastal Educational Pavilion.
Phase 1 will identify a
viable location for the pavilion
with collaboration with all
interested parties to ensure
transparency of the conceptual
site study with community
input.
Deadline Monday to
Less than a week remains
to for all eligible individuals
to become registeredtovote.
The deadline for eligible
non-registered voters is next
Monday, Oct. 7 for the Nov.
5th election.

County jobless rate remains double digits
BY BRANDI G. WEST
Palacios Beacon
MatagordaCounty registered
a slight improvement in the
job market during August as
the unemployment rate fell
by nearly half of a percent;
however remained in double
digits.
According to the latest
figures released by the Texas
Workforce Commission
(TWC), the unemployment
rate for the county fell to
10.0-percent; four-tenths of
a percentage point. This was
down this years’ all time
high unemployment rate of
10.4-percent in July.
In comparison, the statewide
unemployment decreased to
6.3-percent. That is down
from 6.9-percent in August
of 2012 and below the
national unemployment rate
of 7.3-percent.
Notably, Texas
unemployment rate has been at
or below the national rate for 80
consecutive months, according
toTexas Comptroller of Public
Accounts Susan Combs.
“Job growth, sales tax
collections and building
permits all signal that the Texas
economy continues to outpace
the national economy,” said
Combs.
Industries that led the way
in August were Education and
Health Services which added
6,700new jobs, Manufacturing
added 2,600 positions and
Mining and Logging increased
employment by 1,900 new
hires.
“Texas employment fell
by more than 422,000 during
the recession, reaching its
low point in Dec. 2009, but
returned to its pre-recession
peak in Nov. 2011. By June
2013, the state had added an
additional 502,700 jobs.
“In the U.S. as a whole, only
75-percent of recession-hit
jobs were recovered by June
2013,” said Combs.
According to the TWC, of
Matagorda County’s labor
force of 16,707 in August, a
total of 1,678 were without
jobs.
Adjacent counties fared
much better in their jobless
rate s. J ackson County remaine d
the lowest unemployment
rate at 5.3-percent followed
by Wharton County at
6.1-percent, Brazoria County
at 6.5-percent and Calhoun
County once again had the most
significant unemployment
among adjacent counties at
6.8-percent.
Tenaris is Hiring
If you’re reading this and
are either unemployed or
underemployed, according
to Carolyn Thames, Senior
Business Consultant at
Workforce Solutions housed
in Bay City, Tenaris is hiring
for their McCarty Rd. plant in
Houston.
Tenaris will be providing
transportation to and from
the job site from Bay City.
