With continued growth, Texas could face a major water crisis in coming years
Unless action is taken
now, Texas is facing a ma-
jor crisis in coming years - a
water crisis. The population
is growing, the economy and
industry are growing, and
droughts are frequent. All
of which are severely tax-
ing the water resources of
Texas. Fortunately, the many
dedicated people across Tex-
as work to develop the State
Water Plan which identifies
various ’’strategies’’ for meet-
ing the water needs of Texas
in the near and distant future.
The plan, however, will nev-
er meet the water needs of
Texas. Texans, that is to say
you and I, will meet those
needs by acting on the State
Water Plan.
One of the primary strate-
gies in the State Water Plan
is to conserve water. In fact,
the plan includes water con-
servation strategies that, if
implemented, are projected
to account for approximately
2 million acre-feet of water.
Most of the water manage-
ment strategies are focused
on municipal water conser-
vation practices such as de-
veloping water conservation
plans, auditing water loss of
transmission and distribu-
tion systems, and developing
educational programs.
While most urban residents
will participate in water con-
servation through municipal
government activities, most
rural residents will have to
decide when and how they
will implement water con-
servation. The first step to
conserving water is to edu-
cate yourself on the practi-
cal measure you can take to
effectively conserve water.
Fortunately, there are many
resources available. The
Texas Water Development
Board has developed many
resources regarding water
conservation for individuals
which are readily available
on their website (http://www.
twdb.texas.gov/conserva-
tion). Another resource is
the Texas Water Resources
Institute which publishes in-
formation regarding water
conservation on their website
(http://twri.tamu.edu/publi-
cations/).
Texans will continue to
experience drought and in-
creased water demands as the
state grows - all of us need to
do our part to conserve water
now and in the future. The
District encourages all water
users to educate themselves
and take action to conserve as
much water as possible. Ad-
ditional information regard-
ing water conservation can
be obtained by contacting the
District Office.
The Texana Groundwater
Conservation District is a
special district formed under
Chapter 36 of the Texas Water
Code that is responsible for
the conservation, preserva-
tion and protection of ground-
water resources in Jackson
County. The District is gov-
erned by a 7 member board of
directors. The District's office
is located a 411 N. Wells St,
Edna, Texas 77957. www.

highest tax rate the taxing unit can set before taxpayers start rollback procedures. In each case these
rates are found by dividing the total amount of taxes by the tax base (the total value of taxable
property) with adjustments as required by state law. The rates are given per $100 of property value.
