from the committee and the
public before approving the
new plan and submitting it to
TCEQ in March 2012.
While the additional evalu-
ation is under way, LCRA
will continue to operate under
the 2010 Water Management
Plan. However, this year and
in 2012, LCRA is operating
under emergency drought
relief orders approved by
TCEQ. Under those orders,
most downstream rice farm-
ers did not receive Highland
Lakes water for their crops in
2012 or 2013.
If the drought does not
break this year, LCRA could
ask for emergency relief
again next year.

Duo busted for a dozen of illegals
WHARTON- Immigration and Customs officials took
two Needville residents after state troopers pulled over their
van and found nearly a dozen undocumented immigrants
inside. Fuad Hassen Hadi, 27, and Joann Nicole Kimbell,
19, have pending federal charges stated Lt. Danny Terronez
of the Department of Public Safety. The reluctant alleged
human smugglers resisted the initial attempted stop and a
pursuit ensued and finally came to a stop in front of Wharton/
FM 102 exit in front of the hospital. Guns were drawn and
the driver and passenger were cuffed and ordered to the
ground. - Wharton Journal-Spectator
Medical clinic on shool campus
ROCKDALE- The Rockdale ISD school board
entertained Dr. John M Weed Ill’s concept of having a
medical clinic located inside an intermediate campus to assist
school nurses; not replace them. “There is a tremendous
amount of health care going on in a system that’s not a
health care system, commented Dr. Weed. Prior discussions
initiated by Dr. Weed with Little River Healthcare have
formulated a plan to assign a nurse practitioner to the clinic
on campus. According to Dr. Weed, the NP would assist
school nurses with clinical decision-making and not be
the school nurses boss. With staggering statistics related
to childhood obesity, Dr. Weed emphasized, “We’re seeing
recent problems in children on a scale we’ve never seen
before, diabetes, even needing liver transplants, all related
to obesity, and in realty this is an American disease."-The

Animal shelter open longer
EL CAMPO- Whether they are residents due to being
thrown away, abused or simply lost, the animals at El
Campo’s Animal Shelter have hope in finding a home with
the newly extended hours and an additional staff member.
The El Campo Animal Shelter’s extended hours are: regular
business hours Monday-Tuesday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday
-Friday, and 8-noon on Saturday. “Hopefully this will make
it more accessible to the public; the same hours the vet
keeps,” said Police Chief Terry Stanhill. Animal Control
Officers David Baros said, “Its’ a blessing having her
(Wendy Arrambide, mother and animal enthusiast) here.
This place didn’t just get a woman’s touch- it got a whole
makeover.” -El Campo Leader News
Sealy ISD spending $330k on renovations
SEALY-This summer Sealy ISD will spend approximately
$300,000 on improvements to campuses and hopes to
have them all completed by this coming fall school year.
The projects have been approved by the district board of
trustees to include: a front office in the corner of the library
at Salman Elementary and make the building available to
handle all day pre-kindergarten anticipated to begin in the
fall. Salman Intermediate School will renovate its’ outdoor
metal building, and Sealy Junior high will get a covered
awning and updated bathrooms. The auto technician shop
will get improvements in Sealy High School to make room
for the machinist program. The Sealy ISD school board
tabledthe three most expensive items: amarquee sign, push
locks for all campus, fencing: along I-10 and the athletics
department and around Tiger Stadium. -Sealy News
Old bridge drawing historical interest
WHARTON-A local landmark, a rare piece of history,
one of five throughout Texas are words that describe the
Business 59 Colorado River Bridge. More specifically the
main structure of this bridge is a rare Pennsylvania Through
Truss and according to John Holt, Bridge Design Section
Director for the Texas Department of Transportation,
the bridge has drawn interest from the Texas Historical
Commission and the Historic Bridge Foundation. Wharton
resident, Marilyn Sebesta, believes these reasons make this
bridge even more critical in preserving. Sebesta has been
vocally opposing the demolition of this historical bridge
and considers losing this bridge would be to some extent,
“dismantling the town.”- Wharton Journal Spectator
