Mother cat braves flames
in apparent rescue attempt
There may have been several
victims of a fire Tuesday morning
that destroyed a mobile home and a
vacant house in the Gafford’s Chapel
area.
Firefighters and others witnessing
the tragedy watched helplessly as a
mother cat desperately tried to enter
the blaze — apparently trying to
rescue kittens she had left behind.
The fire started in a mobile house
located along a county road off of
Highway 11 and quickly spread to a
nearby vacant frame home owned by
Pizzini Price.
Firefighters were unable to ex-
tinguish the blaze so they fought to
ke6p the fire from spreading to ad-
jacent pastures.
As flames leaped from the trailer
and the house, a yellow cat darted
from the bushes near the house and
ran from corner to -corner of the
trailer house attempting to find an
entrance. Ignoring the danger, the
cat repeatedly tried to squeeze
through the underpinning of the
trailer, only to be driven back by
flames and hqat.
After numerous attempts, the
slender cat gave up and watched as
the flames consumed the trailer.
Fire officials say the blaze is still
under investigation. They had not
located the owners of the trailer.
