Hazel and Johnny Johnson hosted a
supper Tuesday night, March 18, at
their home in the Tira Community for
Addie Mae Herman’s 85th birthday.
Immediate family attended.
Oleta Lancaster and daughter Jan,
Ulyss Wagner of Dimmit visited
recently with Myrtis Posey.
Lawrence and Bessie Goldsmith
spent several days last week with the
Wagon Train in the vicinity of San
Angelo.
Mrs. Mabel Chapman, 94, mother
of Mrs. W.S. (Ruth) Long, passed
away March 16 at Memorial Hospital.
Final rites were held Tuesday at
10:30 at the Tapp Chapel, with in-
ternment in the City Cemetery,
Sulphur Springs.
Joyce and Cleatus Speed were in
Lufkin Mq£ch 16 where Cleatus
conducted the funeral service for a
dear friend.
Brandon Ely, a 4th grader at North
Hopkins, son of Huck and Sheila
McCormack, participated in the'
county-wide Spelling Bee Contest
Tuesday, March 25, at the First
National Bank in Sulphur Springs.
Mary Ola Hembee and son Tony
and a friend Norma of Farmersville
attended open house for Robert and
Shirley Evans Sunday afternoon.
While Tony fished with Paul, Mary
Ola and Norma visited with Freeman
and Ruth Parish.
Frank and Ann Williams of Dallas
visited Sunday with J.B. and Imogene
Williams.
“Jake” Weir passed away at
Woodhaven Nursing Home in Sulphur
Springs Thursday after a long illness.
He was bom and reared in Tira where
he was part-owner of Weir Brothers
Garage before moving to Cooper.
Funeral services were Saturday at
4:00 p.m. in Tira Methodist Church,
with internment in the Tira
Saltillo news
Mrs. Dollie Pearl Armstrong
visited Mrs. Cathey Patterson in
Gilmer Saturday. They were shop-
ping in Longview in the afternoon.

Campbell spent Thursday with their

Monday for some tests and possible
surgery.

Star, Mrs. Maye Smith of Dallas,

Brown of Greenville attended
graveside services for Mrs. Odie
Smith at Stouts Creek Saturday. Mrs.
Odie Smith was the wife of the late
Billy Smith of Rodessa, Louisiana.
Mrs. Mollie White was in Tyler
Sunday to see Skeet Ezell who is a
patient in Mother Frances hospital.
Mrs. Lavee Wilhite spent last week
in Mount Vernon visiting Mrs. Dessie
Crowston.
Mrs. Dessa Crump of Grand
Prairie visited last week with Mr. and
Mrs. Clovis .Adair. Mr. and Mrs.
Adair and Mrs. Crump visited
Wednesday with Mr. and Mrs. Curtis
Monroe.
Mr. and Mrs. James Johnson and
son Ronny of Grand Prairie spent the
weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Waldo
Corley.
Kim Smith of Dallas visited his
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clark
Smith, Wednesday^ last week.
Mrs. Fannie Stretcher spent last
week in Mineral Wells visiting her
son Mr. and Mrs. Gary Stretcher and
children.
Mrs. Arthur’s brother, Bob Odom
of San Angelo is in a nursing home
and »he would love to hear from his
friends in Hopkins County. Bob was
formerly of Cumby; He is
recuperating from a broken hip. His

Ella Swain of Dallas visited Mr. and
Mrs. George Swain Sunday.
Boyd Wardrup celebrated his

and children Brooke and Ben of
Paris, Max Wardrup of Denton and

visited Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ivey
Sunday. Steve is staying this week
with his grandparents.

preacher was talking to Johnny and
said: “Johnny I’ll give you a quarter
to tell me where Jesus is.” Johnny
studied a minute and replied, "I’ll do
you better than that, I’U give you a
dollar if you will tell me where He

Pettigrew of Addran, two brothers,
Bill Weir of Cooper and Herm Weir of
Tira, two sisters, Mamie Sullivan of
Tira and Mattie Lou Ewing of
Sulphur Springs.
Vera Orr spent a few days last
week with Pat and Dale Bulla in
Carrollton. They attended the Saint
Patrick’s Day parade in downtown
Dallas on Monday. Pat was on spring
break from North—Texas State
University, Denton. '
Students, teachers and personnel
are enjoying spring break from North
Hopkins School this week but when
Monday morning rolls around all will
hit the regular routine.
Mark, Suzanne and Casey Weir of
Levelland visited in and out with
Theresa and Arville Weir during
spring break. They all shopped in
Paris Friday.
Savana Lee weighed 7 pounds and
12 ounces when* she was born Friday
at 5:45 p.m. at Memorial Hospital to
Mike and Sandra Gibby. Grand-
parents are Peggy and Jerry Don
Gibby, Janie and Robert Green.
Eva Nelle and Buford Stubbs of
Dallas visited Mrs. Bea Gulledge
Saturday. They visited with the Weir
families before services at the Tira
Community Center where lunch was
served for the families.
E.W. and Merl Withrow spent
Saturday here doing spring cleaning
around the Withrow home here.
Hubert and Grace Vaughn and
grandson Joshua, and J.B. and
Imogene Williams ate fish supper
Saturday night with Kathryn and
Wendell Brandenburgh.
Brother Hollis Preas of Cooper will
begin his ministry Wednesday night
at the Peerless Baptist Church. The
public is invited to come hear him.
Little Miss Holly Patrick, Cindy
and Gary’s 3 year old, participated in
an Easter Parade presented by the
Pilot Club of which Cindy is a
member, at Woodhaven Nursing
Home Saturday afternoon. ,
It was interesting to talk with Mrs.
Rachel Lindley McLeod of Sulphur
Springs. She was bom at Peerless to
J.M. and Alice Strother Lindley.
Rachel’s mother Alice, was bom in
1872 and was baptized at the age of 12
at the Corinth (Addran) Church of
Christ. The old church at Addran was
torn down in 1950, with parts of the
lumber being used in the North
Hopkins Church of Christ. No one, to
our knowledge, knows how old the
church building was because it was
used as a school before the Addran
school building was built. Rachel
didn't tell her age but she still mows
her yard. She drove her car and
crocheted until a very few years ago
when her eyesight failed her.
Bob and Geraldine Howell of
Garland visited Jeannette and Jerry
Willis Sunday.
Pam BateS of Farmersville visited
Shirley and Robert Evans Friday
night and Sunday.
Visiting with Mrs. Ethel Butler
during the weekend were Marcelle
Martin of Dallas, Sue and Bob Shay of
Sulphur Springs, Tim Fouse and J.P.
Butler of Greenville. .... .
Visiting Saturday with Mrs. Lydia
Gregg were Nell Drummond, John,
Pam and Jack Drummond, Don
Drummond and fianee Kathy, Bob,
Li.nda, Donna and Cassie Drummond,

Jason Lane.
Mrs. Rosa Jones was honored
Saturday with a dinner at Shirley and
Jerry Glossup’s home for her 79th
birthday. Her children, grand-
children and great-grandchildren
were present to help her celebrate.

Grace Long of Sulphur
Springs has been noted for
her sales achievement for
Avon company, according
to Valerie Goolsby,
district sales manager for
a six-county area.
The Northeast Texas Food Bank
recently announced the selection of
new officers and members of the
board of directors for 1986.
Clarence Jones was elected
president and is the presiding officer
of the board. He will assist the food
bank's general manager, Reetha
Strain, in the overall operations of the
facility, located at 104 Mulberry St.
First vice president '.s thc Rev, , also participated
Hugh Magers, who will work with the
wholesale and retail food producers
and distributors, to secure donations
of surplus products for use in area
programs to feed the needy.
The Rev. Danny Stewart was
elected second vice president and will
work with area organizations that
serve needy persons. He will help the
organizations qualify to receive food
from the food bank and to discover
the types of food products needed.
Board member Jim Gossett ac-
cepted responsibility to oversee the
physical facility, seeking donation of
items such as refrigeration and
freezer spacer to assist in the
preservation of donated food items.
Local resident
faces charges
of burglary
A 30-year-old Route 1, Sulphur
Springs, resident has been charged
with burglary of a building after
being arrested by sheriff’s deputies
Wednesday afternoon, Sheriff C.W
Grayson said.
James Gregory Marshall of the
Mahoney area is charged in con-
nection with the Sunday burglary of
North Liberty Baptist Church,
Grayson said.
He was arrested by Chief Deputy
Mark Bassham and deputies O.C.
Rupe, R.J. Shackleford, James
Jackson and Fred Hedrick. Jim
Moore, district attorney's m-
so participated in the
investigation.
Deputies recovered two air-
conditioners, a vacuum cleaner and
an electric broom taken from the
church.
Marshall’s bond was set at $2,000,
Grayson said. *
50th Anniversary
Little Mister Lake-Country

Jeffrey McAdams was named Little Mister Lake Country
during a Kids of America Pageant held Saturday, March 15,
in Quinlan where he was judged in interview, Sunday dress
and sportswear. He received a trophy, banner and
medallion. .The youngster will now advance to Grand
Finale, a national pageant, held in Dallas this summer.

Gay and Ruth Chapman visited her
sister Iva Rushing in Paris Wed-
nesday.
Lucille Spencer was in I .one Star
Thursday for business and pleasure.
She found many of her friends ill.
Also with the Lone Star Steel Plant in
a bad situation, everyone is very
concerned.
Dorothy Gene Boger of Hughes
Springs and her daughter Amy
Jackson of Commerce visited Wyman
And Maxene Wednesday.
Our community was saddened by
the death of J.E. “Jake” Weir on
Thursday. He was buried in Tira
Cemetery Saturday.
Next Sunday is Easter Sunday and
we plan an Easter egg hunt on the
Tira Methodist Church grounds at
2:00 p.m. This is not just a church egg
hunt, we urge everyone in the com-
munity to bring your eggs and basket
and join in the fun.
Spring fever has struck. We see
gardens being planted and some of
the more anxious gardeners lost
some of their tomato plants and
peppers. y
I have been noticing all of the
pretty spring flowers in bloom
everywhere in Sulphur Springs* The
wildflowers everywhere, the
wisteria, red buds in bloom are all so
beautiful / in our community.
However, nothing in our flowering
community surpasses Mary Dee's
azaleas. If you get an opportunity
drive by and note these beautiful
flowers.
Dennis Callaway has received word
of the death of his nephew, Joe Glenn
Callaway in Lucerne, California.
Sherry McVay’s aunt and uncle,
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sinn of Ohio
visited Hugh and Sherry for two days
last week. Hugh is recuperating
nicely from recent eye surgery.
J.C. Wester and Kenneth Vandiver
visited Leslie and Beulah Wester
Saturday. •

Jackson, nephew of Lola M. West of
Pike, has completed the man-
portable air defense system course
under the one station unit training
(OSUT) program at the U.S. Army
Air Defense School in Fort Bliss. The
13-week school familiarized/students
with the Redeye and Stinger missile
. systems, the Army*s latest man-
portable, shoulder-fired, short-range,
anti-aircraft weapon
Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Wood celebrated their 50th wed
ding anniversary Friday, March 7. The former Ethel
Roach and Wood were married March 7, 1936, in Sulphur
Springs by the Rev. Long.
Park Springs Reunion Held
Former students of Parks Springs
School met Saturday, March 15, at
the Shooks Chapel Methodist Church.
Arriving about 10 a m., those at-
tending enjoyed visiting and recalling
old times.
At noon a basket lunch was shared
and greatly enjoyed.
After this, F.thel Vermillion read
the history of the Park Springs
School.
A poem composed by Aubrey
Temples was also read.
