Route 3. Sulphur Springs, the
Pleasant Grove Community, were
held Saturday in Tapp Funeral Home
chapel with Robert Elliott and Steve
Smith officiating. Burial was in
Shooks Chapel Cemetery
Newphews served as pallbearers.
Mr Elliott died Wednesday in
Baylor Medical Center, Dallas.
He was born June 29, 1926, in
Sulphur Springs, the son of Jack and
Edna Byrd Elliott, He married Patsy
Stephens March 3,1948. She survives.
He was a retired postal employee
and a member of the league Street
Church of Christ. He was a former
employee of the Cotton Belt Railroad.
He was a veteran of World War II and
a member of the VFW and the Odd
Fellows.
Mr. Byrd was a 1944 graduate of
Sulphur Springs High School.
Other survivors include a son,
Michael Elliott of Dike; a daughter,
Kathleen Elliott of Sulphur Springs; a
grandson; three brothers. Jack
Elliott of Mineola, Herbert Elliott of
Dike and Robert Elliott of Temple:
four sisters, Audrey Walls of
Longview, Jane Gra> of Houston,
Ann Ixind of Tyler and Judy Jones of
Hearne.
Mr. Elliott was preceded in death
by a son, Stephen Merida Elliott.

Adams, 94, of Rockdale, formerly of
Sulphur Springs, were held Wed-
nesday in Murray-Orwoskv Funeral
Home with Billy Allen officiating.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.
Burial was in City Cemetery
Mrs Adams died Sunday in
Rockdale.
She was born June 20 1892, in
Peerless, the daughter of H.G. and
Sally Hooten Ewing. She married
A W "Fred" Adams June 17,1914 He
preceded her in death in August of
1976
She was a longtime member of the
Sulphur Springs Garden Club, a
former president of the high school
PTA and was a member of Southside
Church of Christ _' _
Mrs Adams was a former Hopkins
County teacher She received a
certificate from North Texas State
College in Denton and Bible College
in Gunter
She was a member of a Hopkins
County pioneer family.
Survivors include a son, Ewing
Adams of Longview; three
daughters, Mrs. Wilma Jones of
Rockdale, Mrs. Ix'tajo Howard of
Austin and Mrs. Dorothy Crouch of
Dallas; a brother, B B Ewing of
Sulphur Springs; 15 grandchildren;
and 22 great-grandchildren.
Ruth Lackey
Services for Mrs. Ruth Lackey, 73,
of 510 Whitworth St., were held
Wednesday in Tapp Funeral Home
Chapel with the Revs. Don Tinsley
and Kenneth Rhoades officiating.
Burial was in Rockdale Cemetery
with Jimmy George Jr., Joe Lynn
Shearer, Junior Horton, Thurman
Littlefield, Archie Bell and Jimmy
George serving as pallbearers.
Mrs. lackey died Monday at
Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 23, 1912, in
Winnsboro, the daughter of Samuel
Payne and Sally Coker Payne.
She was a former employee with
Sulphur Springs Laundry and
Salmon’s Cleaners, and a member of
Central Baptist Church.
She married Jack Lackey July 24,
1944. He preceded her in death in 1965.
She is survived by two daughters,
Betty Wiler of Sulphur Springs and
Alice Cobb of Irving; five grand-
children; one brother, B.G. Payne of
Fort Worth; two sisters, Evalee
Cawthron of.Winnsboro and Alvie
Herby of F'orth Worth; and several
nieces and newphews.
She was preceded in death by four
brothers and two sisters.
Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel with
the Rev. Gaither L. Day officiating.
Burial was in the Shirley Cemetery.
Grandsons and nephews served as
pallbearers.
Mrs. Smithwiek died Monday at her
residence.
She was born in Sulphur Springs
July 4,1917, the daughter of Tom and
Dessie Rutha Jonas Brown.
She was a member of the Baptist
Church and had resided in Sulphur
Springs since 1983.
Survivors include her husband,
S.P. Smithwiek of Sulphur Springs;
three sons, Earl Douglas Henderson
of Bonner Springs, Kan., Rodney R.
Henderson of Sulphur Springs and
Henry A. Williams of Garland; two
stepdaughters, Patricia Ann
Smithwiek and Saundra Sue
Smithwiek both of Paris; one stepson,
Charles Marvin Gilbert of Tawakoni;
two sisters. Flora Bowden of Dallas
and Ruth Gunion of Garrett, Ind.;
eight grandchildren; four great-
grandchildren; six stepgrand-

grandehildren,

Mrs. Taylor died Thursday in

She was born Dec. 2,1915, in Obine
County, Tenn., the daughter of J.R.
and Fannie Hicks Cooper. She
married Champ C. Taylor Nov. 19,
1932, in Paragould, Ark. He survives.
She was a housewife and a member
of the Shannon Oaks Church of Christ.
She resided in Sulphur Springs since
1980
Other survivors include two sons,
Ray Tay lor of Longview and Dwight
Taylor of Hanford, Calif.; a daughter,
Mary Boring of Sulphur Springs; two
brothers, Ben Cooper of Huntington
Beach, Calif, and Warren Cooper of
New Albany. Miss.; two sisters,
Margaret Cox of Norfork, Calif., and
Beauton Yarrow of Lucadia, Calif;
four grandchildren; and one great-
grandchild.
James Moore
Services for James E. "Jim''
Moore, 41, of 819 North Davis St were
held Sunday in Tapp Funeral Home
chapel with the Rev Gaither Day
officiating. Burial was in Restlawn
Memorial Park

Mr Moore died Friday in Memorial
Hospital
He was born June 14, 1945, in
Greenville, the son of Eugene and
Erna Smith Moore. He married Betty
Mayes Sept. 1, 1979. in Sulphur
Springs. She survives.
He was an investigator for the
Hopkins County District Attorney's
office and was formerly employed as
a reporter and photographer for The
News-Telegram.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam
war, having served in the U.S. Air
Force. He was a member of the
Sheriff's Association of Texas, the
Texas District and County Attorney's
Association, International
Association for Identification and the
Texas Commission on Law En-
forcement Officers' Standards and
Education.
Other survivors include four
children, Kristi Moore and Jason
Moore, both of Alba, Scott Steele and
Stacy Jackson, both of Sulphur
Springs; his mother, Erna Moore of
Emory; and a sister, Sherry
O'Donald of Dallas.
Springs, were held in Harvey Funeral
Home chapel in Mount Vernon with
the Rev. Mike Milbum officiating.
Burial was in Restlawn Cemetery in
Sulphur Springs.
Mr. Barrett died Thursday, Sept. 4,
in Franklin County.
He was a jeweler.
He married Freda Davis. She
survives of Mount Vernon.
Other survivors include a daughter,.
Doris Meek of Mount Vernon; a
sister, Valera Alexander of Sulphur
Springs; three grandchildren; and
six great-grandchildren.
Edith Glossup
Services for Edith Glossup, 81, of
Kelso, Wash., formerly of Hopkins
County, were held Tuesday in Tapp
Funeral Home chapel with Durwood
Speed and Cleatus Speed officiating.
Burial was in Elblem Cemetery.
Nephews and grandsons served ,as
pallbearers.
Mrs. Glossup died Tuesday in
I^ongview, Wash.
She was born Aug. 29, 1905, in
Texas, the daughter of T.T. and
Elizabeth Lasater Speed. She
married-W.F. Bill’’ Glossup Dec. 3,
1922, in Ridgeway. He preceded her in
death.
She was a member of the Baptist
Church.
Survivors include a son, Norwood
Glossup of Washington; a grandson;
two great-grandchildren; four
brothers, W.L. Speed of Patterson,
Calif., Sam Speed of Miller Grove,
Durwood Speed and Cleatus Speed,
both of Sulphur Springs; and a sister,'
Evie Robbins of Strathmore, Calif.
Arthur Davis
Services for Arthur J. Davis, 78, of
515 Mulberry St., were held Tuesday
in the Church of God with the Rev.
W.O. Watwood officiating. Graveside
services were in Cypress Cemtery.
Pallbearers were Marvin Evans,
Bascom Evans, John Evans, Danny
Evans, Paul Morales, Gil Grady, Bill
Zimmerman, Boyce Zimmerman and
Danny Zimmerman.
He was born Jan. 30, 1908, in
Peerless, the son of Oscar Turner
Davis and Rosa Ann Wilks Davis. He
married Jewell Autrey Aug. 19, 1927,
in the Cypress Community. She
preceded him in death in August of

Springs announce the birth of a son,
Travis I,ee Baxley, at 5:36 a.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 27, in Hopkins
County Memorial Hospital. He
weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces and was
19 l2 inches long. Grandparents are
Ray and Nell Kirkpatrick and I-arry
and Betty Baxley, all of Sulphur
Springs. Great-grandparents are
Henrietta Kirkpatrick and Abbie
Medina, both of Sulphur Springs, and
Nina Talley of Whitesboro.
Hopkins County, were held Wed-
nesday at Turrentine-Jackson-
Morrow Funeral Home chapel in
McKinney with the Rev. Larry
Walker officiating.
Burial was in Ridgeview Memorial
Park in McKinney.
Mr. Drummond died Sept. 1 at
Mesquite Community Hospital.
He was born in Birthright Jan. 29,
1932, to John Drummond and Lydia
Lawrence Drummond.
He was a paint contractor, a
member of Limestone Baptist Church
in Dallas and a veteran of the U.S.
Army. „
He married Margie Nell Anderson
Nov. 26, 1952," in Rockwall. She sur-
vives.
Other survivors include a son,
Robby Dale Drummond; two
daughters, Pamela Gale Pruitt of
Rockwall and Lujo Watts of Royce
City; his mother, Lydia Gregg of
Sulphur Springs; two brothers, J.E.
Drummond of Dallas and Max
Drummond of Sulphur Springs; two
sisters, Mary Lou Duncan of Mount
Vernon and Sue Stiberson of
Colorado; and seven grandchildren.
Myers joins
Ideal K-Mart
Craig Myers, 27, has been
named an assistant manager at
the Sulphur Springs K-Mart
Discount Store.
Myers comes to Sulphur
Springs from the K-Mart
Discount Store in Lufkin where
he alio served there as an
assistant manager.
At the Sulphur Springs store,
Myers will be in charge of or-
dering all merchandise for the
store and will also assist store
manager, Loretta Brown.
He graduated from West
Jefferson High School in New
Orleans. After graduation from
high school, Myers attended
Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La.
In 1980 he graduated from
Louisiana Tech with a degree in
forestry management. Upon
graduation, he joined K-Mart at
one of its stores in New Orleans.
After three years at the New
Orleans K-Mart, he was tran-
sferred to Lufkin where he
worked for one year before

Services for Mrs. Florine Ashcroft
Thompson, sister of two Sulphur
Springs residents, were held Friday
in Highland Park Presbyterian
Church in Dallas with Dr. J.B.
Kennedy officiating.
Graveside services were held at
Sulphur Springs City Cemetery
Saturday under the direction of Tapp
Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike
Barron officiating.
Mrs. Thompson died at her home in
Dallas Wednesday. She was 83.
Mrs. Thompson was born in June
1903 in Hopkins County. She was
married to Sheridan A. Thompson.
He preceded her in death Nov. 21,
1982.
She was a member of Phi Beta
Kappa, the Shakespeare Club, Dallas
Woman’s Club, Dallas Country Club
and Craig Class. She was also a
member of Dallas Museum of Art,
Zeta Tau Alpha, Highland Park
Presbyterian Church and was a
trustee of the YWCA National Board.
She is survived by a sister, Mrs.
W.A. Carothers of Sulphur Springs; a
brother, Enos L. Aspcroft of Sulphur
Springs; a son, S.A. Thompson Jr. of
Houston; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a
sister. Marjorie Lou Wilson of Austin.
Well-fed mules
J.W. Jines, Perryton, had the "two fattest mules on the
train" as the Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train stopped
at Wichita Faljs June 15-16. Jines was one of the wagoners
who took advantage of the fresh feed and grain available
each day from the feed truck accompanying the train.
