Extension
to open in early January
By MARY GRANT
News Telegram Staff
The Oak Avenue-Gilmer Street
project is expected to be in operation
in early January, Andrew Macffe
Sulphi/r Springs director of
community development, said
i Friday.
Final plans are being conducted to
obtain street signs, complete
negotiations with the county for the
Oak Avenue extension, level out a
railroad crossing and paint an Oak
Avenue center stripe.
In a meeting Friday with the
Hopkins County Commissioners
Court during a posted work session,
City Manager David Tooley and
Mack agreed to a remeasiurement of
ground near the courthouse involved
in a trade between the city and
county.
Preliminary measurements in-
dicated a 22 square-foot discrepancy.
“Let’s speed it (the remeasurement)
up so you can get your work done,”
Tooley told the court.
The county is in the process of
building a parking lot for courthouse
employees south of the courthouse to
house'43 parking spots. The work has
been temporally halted until the
parking lot lines are established.
County Judge Wayne Scott asked
that consideration be made to
providing a design for the front area
west of the courthouse.
The street and square renovation
are part of a Heritage Square project
undertaken by the city for the
downtown area. -—•
As part of that project, Oak Avenue
has been extended across College
Street to Jefferson Street east of the
courthouse. The State Department of
Highways and Public Transportation
hks approved the sign plans by the
city and has begun production of state
highway number signs for the street,
which will extended north in a one-
way pattern.
Gilmer Street traffic will move
south in a one-way pattern.
John Yant, highway department
resident engineer, said the section of
the street at the railroad tracks will
have to be adjusted.
Mack noted that the city will
negotiate with the Kansas City
Southern Railroad for the work on the
rails and order stop signs from a sign
company for other areas of the street.
The state highway department is
involved in the project because of
State Highway 154, which now ex-
tends along Gilmer Street and will be
included in Oak Avenue when the two
streets receive otwway status
No-parking signs will be placed
between the intersections of Oak
Avenue and Church Street on Jef-
ferson Street to ease the traffic1 flow.
At that point, Jefferson Street will be
divided into three traffic lanes, Mack
said.
Tha exact date of the street com-
pletion and opening depends on
weather conditions and completion of
the remaining requirements, the
officials noted.
