:m Brown county. The
Dp is becoming, $0 rank
that the farmers are going to
cut the crop back with a mower
to keep frost from injuring it.
C. W. England, a farmer lining
two miles south of Brownwood,
has been running a mower in bis(
oat field for the past three days
cutting the grain down so that a
heavy frost will do it no damage.
Mr. England tried to get cattle
to pasture on the field, but near
ly every stock owner anil farmer
is about as well fixed in the feed
line as is Mr. England and have
their own fields of oats.
The winter grain crops were
never in such good condition in
this county as at present,
mense acreage has been sown to
wheat, oats and rye and the fine
rains have grown the crops to
where they are worth thousands
of dollars to the farmers and
stockmen for grazing purposes.
Much of the oat crop is volunteer
and this seems to be better ad-
vanced than the sown crops.'

sale ofintoxicants in Texas.-
One of these laws,' prohibiting
state shipments of liquor into
dry territory, makes the appar-
ent attempt to put grape juice in
competition with intoxicants by
providing specifically for its
transportation. As an ai<f to
stopping liquor traffic • in dry
communities* dealers are for-
bidden to solicit business by let-
ter. circular or iD any other man-
ner in such places. Some law-
yers have taken this to mean
that newspaper advertising of
liquor may be stopped in dry
communities. The penalty for
this prohibited soliciting is made
a felony.
The other law, known as the
9:30 civil closing law, adds to the
restrictions imposed by the al-
ready effective 9:30 criminal clos-
ing law- Under the civil law a
man may not both sell and
deliver liquor. The effect is in-
tended to be to make it more
difficult to secure intoxicants.
This law also, according to
present rulings by State Comp-
troller W. P. Lane, forces the
closing at 9:30 p. m. of any other
business run in the same or
adjacent rooms with the bar No
one may remain in any of the
rooms thereafter, even to sw^ep
out.
Texas also puts into effect 12
other new laws, at midnight
Monday, all enacted last spring.
One of these puts building and
loan associations under state
supervision. A blue sky 1 a w
prohibits solicititg stock sale for
corporations with a permit from
either the secretary of state or
the state commissiones of insur-
ance and banking. Exceptions
to this are corporations with not
more than 25 stockholders and?
fraternal beneficiary organiza-1
tiODS.
