When it isn't possible for
everyone who would really
like to visit the Historical
Museum, Museum Matters
is a way to share the stories
about some of the great
artifacts. It could be
somewhat like the old
History 101 "classes."
What was "The Trail'and
when was? For those who
delight in the history of
Dublin and Dublin schools,
there are the wonderful
school yearbooks!
How many know that this
is the 100th anniversary of
the VERY FIRST yearbook?
It wasn’t called the
"Shamrock," but is was "The
Trail." It ambitiously said it
was "Volume One" and
"Published Annually by the
Senior Class of Dublin High
School."
The TRAIL
The 1913 "Trail" was
dedicated to Professor O.L
Wilkins, A.R. The inscription
reads, "In recognition of his
faithful and efficient
services as Principal of the
High School, and in
testimony of the esteem
and affection in which he is
held by the student body..."
The accompanying
photograph is of a quite
handsome young man with
every appearance of being a
friendly and kindly
gentleman.
What a happy discovery
for the Museum Lady when
on page four, the Editorlcal
Staff is headed by Johnnie
Mae Vickers (Salutitorian) as
Editor-in-Chief. "That's my
first and second grade
teacher from 1941!"
The others on the staff
were John Keith
(Valedictorian), Robert
Huchingson, Willie D.
Higginbotham, Hattie
Warren, Harvey Fisher,
Preston Lafferty, Catherine
Faust, and Royal Prim... .all
DHS Seniors.
Associate editors were
Charles Faust Or.), Bruce
Shoemaker (Soph.), and
Bertha Fazier (Fresh.)
NEW School-1913
There is an artists'
beautiful rendition of what
the "New High School
Building" was to look like
and a full page of description
of the room arrangements
of each of the three stories.

Trustees are J.H. Latham,
President, A.N. Whitten,
M.C. Witcher, Tom Easley,
J.E. Hickman, Byron Martin,
W.P. Hallmark, J. W. Dunlap,
Secretary, as well as
Superintendent of Schools,
and J.D. Brock Assessor and
Collector.
Latin and German?
The faculty Included O.L
Wilkins (English and
Mathematics), C.H. Watkins
(Science), June Pearce (Latin
and German), Inez Bainum
(History), Naomi E Lowe
(Voice), Lillian McLendon
(Instructor of the Preps).
Seniors other than the
yearbook staff included
Warrena Chambers, Zelma
Hamilton, Hattie Warren,
Bob Dyer, Frances Elizabeth
Lloyd, Antha Hennessee,
Louise Burk, Ruth Latham,
Bettie Parker, Lottie
Carpenter, Maurice Bouldin,
Alice Goodwin, and Beaulah
Cole.
It would be extra special if
some history buff/sleuth
would trace the “trails” of
this class of 1913.
There are 108 pages in
this, the first, remarkable
100 year-old DHS yearbook
Do come by the Museum to
see what it says about
athletics, clubs, activities,
and the businesses that
financed it. It will be on the
desk at the front, and copies
can be made of special
pictures or stories.
Wonderful hosts and
hostesses are always ready
to show you around. (Of
course there are many other
yearbooks, too.)

The Rodeo Heritage
Museum needs volunteers to
keep the museum open to
the public. The museum
already has Stanley Anderson
and Judy Lunsford. Stanley
opens once a month and
Judy does kids tours by
appointment and, boy does
she get the kids interested
and excited.
The kids were asking
questions and she was
relating to up-close and
personal experiences of the
Dublin Rodeo and some of
the Worlds Championship
Rodeo Company stars.
What an asset the Rodeo
Heritage Museum has. These
people make a difference at
the Rodeo Heritage Museum
and you can do the same.
Maybe you don’t have the
memories of the Dublin
Rodeo but keeping the doors
open gives other people the
opportunity to built their
own memories of the Rodeo
Heritage Museum.
Yes, we have out-of-state
people that come to Dublin
just to see the Rodeo Heritage
Museum just as the other
museums in Dublin have
had.
The diversity that we have
in museums in Dublin will
bring more people to visit
and to shop. So come to the
Rodeo Museum and donate
just 4 hrs one day a month
or you want to help with
replacing photos. Call
Carolyn at 445-0200 or 254-

Recording Memories of
the Dublin Rodeo and the
World’s Championship
Rodeo Company.
For 20 years Everett
Colbom operated his World’s
Champion Rodeo Company
from Dublin, Texas and the
Dublin Rodeo was held 17 of
those years.
When Colbom decided to
make Dublin, Texas his
home, his rodeo company
brought fame, excitement,
money, new people and
memories to Dublin and
many other national cities.
These memories are
precious to the Rodeo
Heritage Museum The Rodeo
Heritage Museum wants to
record them and keep them
safe for future generations.
The Rodeo Heritage
Museum is having a contest
that will be unveiled in
February of 2014, for the
most funniest, most
dangerous, most rewarding,
most thrilling and most
factual. Some stories will be
printed in the Dublin Citizen
along with your name. If you
have a story about the
World's Championship
Rodeo Company during
1937 to 1959 write it down
and call Carolyn at 445-0200
or 254-445-2184 to see
where to send it.
Here’s the first Memory
Story that the Rodeo
Heritage Museum will
record:
Bud McKinney, longtime
postmaster and former
Mclroy Grocery Store
employee,
recalls he bought his first
jeans and western shirt
during the time of the Dublin
Rodeo.
Bud was in charge of the
meat market and he
remembers he sold meat to
the Ava Colbom and when a
big crowd from out of town
was expected at the Lightning
C Ranch she would order
whole beef of the loin cut for
T-bones steaks, etc to be
cured 2 to 7 weeks. Me hoy’s
Grocery store sold only local
home grown beef.
Gerald Mclroy owner of
Mdroy Grocery Store was in
the Dublin Rodeo Booster
Club. The Dublin Rodeo
Booster Club would take
chartered buses and travel
from town to town to
advertise the Dublin Rodeo.
Gerald McRoy would practice
his rope tricks at Mdroy’s
Grocery Store and all the
employees would poke fun
at him. Then one day a
picture appeared in the Fort
Worth Star Telegram of a
man doing rope tricks and it
was Gerald Mclroy.
When Bud McKinney
worked in the Dublin Post
Office he noted the
tremendous amount of mail
that went through the Dublin
post office because of the
Worlds Championship Rodeo
Company. That gave the
Dublin Post Office a higher
rating and more money was
made in Dublin. Just one of
the many factors that the
Worlds Championship Rodeo
Company brought commerce
to Dublin Texas during 1937-
1959.

Standoff ends in fugitive's death
Parker County Sheriffs
investigators wrapped up
the crime scene on Cindy
Lane in Springtown early
Tuesday afternoon where
Winford Raynard Watkins,
44, died following an all-
night standoff.
After fleeing from
deputies, Watkins ended up
hiding the in the attic of a
Springtown home until
around 5 Tuesday morning.
“He dropped down out of
the ceiling and deputies saw
him and confronted him the
hallway,” Sheriff Larry
Fowler said.
“That’s when it all went
down. He stayed up there
all night long.” Deputies had
used tear gas to try and

persuade Watkins to leave
his hiding spot earlier in the
night, but 12-inches of new
insulation are believed to
have aided him in sitting
out the tear gas. “Old
insulation is only 2 to 3
inches thick,” Fowler said.
“He wouldn’t have been able
to stay up there. But [the
insulation was] new and 12
inches thick He just buried
up in there — that’s a
theory.”
When Watkins came down
from die attic he pointed a
gun at officers who were
able to fire first. Watkins’
body is now in possession
of the Tarrant County
Medical Examiner’s Office.
Texas Rangers are
investigating the shooting.
“Any officer involved
shooting I have, I don’t
investigate it myself," Fowler
said. Watkins fled from
deputies after he was pulled
over on Midway Road, exited
his vehicle and appeared to
have a weapon hidden
between a stack of papers.
A female passenger was left
at the scene of the traffic
stop as Watkins took off.
Another deputy who was
just arriving on scene
chased Watkins to Cindy
Lane.
