Assembly of God Church.

Smith gets
nomination for
agriculture
Don Smith of Hopkins County has
been nominated for the newly created
National Commission on Dairy
Policy, according to the Texas Farm
Bureau.
The Hopkins County dairyman is
one of the nominees whose names are
being submitted to Secretary of
Agriculture Richard Lyng by Sen.
Jesse Helms of North Carolina,
chairman of the Senate Agriculture,
Sen. Phil Gramm told the Texas
Farm Bureau. Smith was placed on
the list of Helms’ nominees at the
request of Gramm.
The 18-member commission,
established by a new farm bill, will
study and make recommendations
concerning the future operations of
the federal milk price support
program.
The commission will study the
current price support program,
alternatives of such a program, the'
future functioning of such a program,
new technologies, the effect of new
technologies and the future structure
of the milk production industry.
Smith is currently serving as state
director of the Texas Farm Bureau
and operates a dairy and a beef cattle
and hay operation.
He was elected to the Texas Farm
Bureau board last December and has
served on the Hopkins County Farm
Bureau board of directors since 1968.
He served as county president of the
HCFB for four years.
lie has served on the dairy advisory
committee for both the Texas Farm
Bureau and the American Farm
Bureau Federation. He also served on
the Texas Farm Bureau Hay and
Forage Advisory Committee.
Smith was a recipient of the Out-
standing Farmer and Rancher award
from the Hopkins County Chamber of
Commerce and the Outstanding
Y unc E ariner award from the Texas
Young Farmers.
He has served on the County. Ex-
tension Program Building Committee
and the Dairy Advisory Committee.

It was reported that the literature
