PENICILLIN
The drug that was discovered twice could well be said of
Penicillin because Dr. Alexander Fleming did not arouse
the interest of his medical colleagues when, in 1928, he
announced that he had found a mould that would destroy
bacteria. Years passed but no further development was
made until acute need for antibacterial agents at the start
of World War II brought about the “re-discovery“ of this
wonder drug when the War Production Board began super-
vising its commercial production in May 1944.
