Teachers take training
I Twenty-two Dublin Independent
School District teachers volunteered
three days of their summer to attend
a Model for Effective Teaching and
Supervision (METS) program con-
ducted in Dublin Elementary by Jane
Ledbetter, of Dublin, head of the
English Department at Gran bury
High School.
The METS program is a state-wide
model to improve teaching in Texas.
During the seminar, Ledbetter
discusses lesson cycles and effective
teaching practices with the teachers
present.
“We talked about using questioning
procedures that cany students to
higher levels of thinking,” stated
Ledbetter
The lesson cycle, said Ledbetter,
iy
explains to the teachers how to take
lessons from the essential elements
and take it to the class.
Ledbetter said they went through
steps of teachers focusing the subject
the explaining it to the students. Dur-
ing explanations, the teachers are to
look for understanding in the
students.
Teachers will then take the
students through guided practice,
checking for mastery. The last step
will be for the students to have in-
dependent practice.
"The cycle builds in an alternative
also If a student is not understan-
ding, the teachers can go back and
work with them This places an em-
phasis on individualism

fective teaching practices is to create
a common language between the
teacher and students.
“A teacher can give the student
knowledge, but the student must
understand what to do with the
knowledge before it does any good,”
said Ledbetter
The concept of the effective
teaching practices is to move through
six levels, beginning with knowledge
and ending with evaluating
knowledge, said Ledbetter
Ledbetter said they also spent time
talking about the new teachers' ap-
praisal instrument This is a new pro-
gram where the teachers will be
observed in their classroom by ad-
ministrator's 45 minutes four times a
year
"After the teachers are observed,
they will talk with the adnumstrators
concerning their teaching. It will be a
lot more work, but the end product is
better teachers,” stated I^dbetter
I better said most of these pro-
grams are being used by good
teachers already. However, METS
helps the teachers to be more
effective
"I haven’t seen a teacher who has
walked away that didn't feel like
they'd learned These are teachers
who are working to improve
themselves. Dublin has some good
teachers, but even the best can be
better, commented l^edbetter

Iduviotmers, if you need extra in-
come and would consider leasing
your land to hunters, call the
chamber office We have a list of
hunters, primarily from the
metroplex area, who have called the
chamber throughout the year seeking
land to lease
Many have offered to provide
references and other information to
the land owner We have a large
enough! list so that you can be rather
selective if one group does not meet
with your satisfaction
With dove season opening laibor
Day weekend, 1 am sure that there
will be many hunters anxious to
secure a lease as soon as possible
Some very dedicated people, who

their time, have been renovating the
Dublin Chamber of Commerce float
that is used to carry Miss Dublin and
her court during parades
Kenneth Durham, Joyce Durham,
and Jimmy Smith deserve a special
thank you not only from the chamber
but also from the residents of Dublin
We receive a lot of invitations from
other communities requesting that
we participate in their parades and
festivals
Every time that we send our float it
becomes a symbol of Dublin and
represents our local businesses The
' new float will premiere at the
I)eI>eon Peach and Melon festival on
Aug 6 at 7 p m
We hope that you will attend the
parade and give our Miss Dublin, her
court and the float a big hand And
the next time you see Kenneth. Jim-
my or Joyce remember to say thank
you for a job well done
