Doctor Crabtree: I had a tooth pull-
ed recently and got a dry socket.
What causes this and can it be
prevented?
Dear Reader: Alveolitis, or dry
socket as it is commonly called, is an
extremely painful inflammation of
the bone.
It occurs, when after an extraction,
the blood clot, which protects the
bone, is lost.
With the blood clot gone, the bone is
exposed to bacteria and possible in-
fection. The pain associated with this
condition is usually severe.
Alveolitis, is however, preventable
in most cases. Certain steps can be
taken to protect the blood clot.
Carbonated and alcoholic
beverages should be avoided for at
least three days following any
extraction.
Patients should avoid rinsing for at
least six hours after the extraction.
Warm salt water may be used after
this if desired. The salt concentration
should be no stronger than one fourth
teaspoon of salt to a cup of water.
Certain medications can cause a
patient to be predisposed to alveolitis.
Common drugs such as birth control
pills and aspirin can increase the pa-
tient’s tendency to bleed freely and to
lose the blood clot.
Alveolitis can be treated, usually
with a three to four visit treatment
routine. Medicated dressing, along
with an antibiotic ointment, is placed
as a substitute for the blood clot. This
protects the bone and reduces pain
until the gum heals.
