Did you know it hat rained nearly
SO inches this year., jo far?
Ethel Black from the Edna HID
Community was in the Progre— of-
fice Friday morning. She seported
she had recorded nearly 90 inches this
year. Mrs. Black keeps track of Dm
rainfall on her calendar.
I checked with Am Lee Nelson for
Dublin’s official rainfall and, as of
Friday, Dublin has received 49.49 in-
ches this year.
That’s almost twice our average
yearly rainfall. The average for this
area is between 29-32 inches, accor
ding to the 1906-87 Texas Almanac.
mb
Kea Jurney, water, sewer and
itreet superintendent far Dublin, said
the excessive rainfall is creating new
and deeper chug holes hi city streets.
Jurney said they are hepfag for drier
weather so they caa patch the hake.
“When we put wet base material in-
to a wet hole it doesn’t do any good,”
he said.
I hope the weather will cooperate so
we can get some more of these holes
patched. Unfortunately, weathermen
are predicting more rainfall between
now and the end of the year.

It’s rare that I use a news release
on the front page of The Dublin Pro-
gress. I believe we need to put stories
of local events and local interest on
our front page.
This week I made an exception.
After receiving an excellent news
release from the Texas Department
of Health about the dangers of drunk
driving, I decided to use that story in
place of my ongoing series about drug
abuse.
mh
My planned topic for this week
dealt with alcoholism, so this article
was particularly timely. I felt the

In brief articles, there is no way to
include all the information I have
discovered about drug abase.
Through these articles I hops to make
people aware of the problem here in
Dublin and to learn ways of dealing
with it
If you want to know more, I have a
stack of material about three inches
high which goes into more depth
about all the topics I have covered so
far. I will be happy to loan this infor-
mation to you.
If you would like to have the infor-
mation for yourself, contact Georgia
Braithwaite at the Alcohol and Drag
Intervention Council in Stephenville,
966-5515.

In the midst of your celebration this
year, I hope you find time to reflect
on the deeper meaning of
Christmas—celebrating the birth of
Jesus Christ.
Merry Christmas and, in the words
