CHECKERBOARD NEWS
by Milton Brown
WATSON FEED A HATCHERY
hogs are"Good property
We all know that there have
been times when the price of hogs
has gotten so low that they didn’t
show much profit; but if you check
back through the years, I think
you’ll agree that hogs have been
money-making property.
bunch of hogs recently that had
been on our program. They brought
the very top market price, of
course, and he is starting another
group now. He is a real good hog
man.
Another top feeder in this area
who follows our program is David
Dahl. He sold 14 head a few days
Yet many farmers get only about Dahl. He sold 14 head a tew days
one-third Jr one-haif of the profit ago for 524.75 ^hund^ed-weight,
they should receive from their
hogs. They have actually cheated
themselves out of it. I say this, not
to criticise, but to point out the
need for a practical program of
breeding, feeding, management,
and sanitation that can give all
hog raisers a chance at all the
profit that can be theirs.
A Utter of five pigs weaned will
do weU to pay expenses on the
brood sow and put itself to market.
Figures show that the average
farmer weans about 6% pigs, on
the average, per litter. Sows at the
Purina Research Farm averaged
9.2 pigs per litter last year Indi-
vidual hog men could do as well
and some do, by following Purina s
recommendations. To get large lit-
ters of healthy, heavy pigs, we
recommend feeding Sow Chow and
grain during the period from breed-
ing to farrowing, using the ratio
of 1 to 4- , . .___
For the pigs, we feed one bag
of MW tig Chow per litter which
they will begin to eat at about a
week of age. Then we feed Pig
Startena until the pigs Weigh about
50 pounds each, after which we
change to Hog Chow and grain.
If you haven’t tried this program,
which can put your pigs to market
in four and two-thirds months, try
it; and we are certain you’ll be
satisfied, like ao many of our cus-
tomers are.
H. L. Meinkowsky sold a nice
and they averaged 202 pounds.
David boosts his farm income by
almost always having some pigs in
the feed lot.
EGG PROFITS
Egg1 profits are determined by
tfwo basic factors—price of eggs
and cost to produce them. While
we cannot do much about the price
of eggs, we can do a lot about the
cost of producing them.
Three things that can keep egg
costs down are (1) increased pro-
duction, (2) lower death loss, and
(3) greater efficiency in converting
feed into eggs.
We don’t know of a better way
to get the most eggs from the small-
est amount of feed than to follow
the Purina Plan. We have a laying
feed to fit any operation.
Before your pullets begin to lay,
be sure to worm them. A good way
to do this is to use Purina Liquid
Poultry Wormer in the drinking
water.
Vaccinating against pox is equal-
ly important so that they cannot
come down with it after they have
begun to lay, and, as a result, go
out of production.
After the pullets have begun to
lay, top feed with Booster Chow
Checkers, no matter what laying
feed you are using.
This will usually increase pro-
duction, help egg size, and prevent
moult at this critical period of the
pullet’s life.
