STATE DEPARTMENT
OF HEALTH LETTER
Austin,' Texas.—“One of the strik-
ing examples of over working a good
thing is the enthusiasm displayed by
thousands of persons in trying to se-
cure a sun tan too quickly. Under a
misguided conception of the sun’s
health giving power, such people eith-
er deliberately or thoughtlessly submit
their unprotected faces, backs and
legs to over-exposure and suffer pain-
fully, sometimes seriously, as a con-
sequence,’’ comments Dr. Geo. W.
Cox, State Health Officer.
“The discomfort and annoyance of
even mild sunburn should deter peo-
ple from repeating this folly from
year to year. However, especially
where younger persons are concerned,
the enthusiasm for fun and the de-
sire to become speedily tanned are
likely to exact the inevitable price
with painful regularity.
“It is one thing to apply the prin-
ciples of sun treatment scientifically
and quite another one to place the
tender skin unrestrainedly under the
direct rays of the sun. It should be
understood that when the sun is em-
ployed as treatment, patients are ex-
posed for but a few minutes at a
time, the periods being gradually ex-
tended as the tanning develops.
“The uninformed and the thought-
less, on the other hand, give the sun
free rein, submit themselves fre-
quently to hours of continuous expos-
ure and naturally reap misery and ill-
ness as a direct consequence.
"Before becoming too ardent over
sunbathing, one would do well to pon-
der that many a vacation or .weekend
excursion has been ruined sorely be-
cause the blistering and illness-pro-
ducing power of the sun’s rays upon
the tender skin was insufficiently ap-
preciated.
TEACHERS’ PAY RESTORED
Fort Worth, Texas, June 5.—Half
of teachers’ salary reductions during
the last five years were restored and
new and longer term contracts were
offered by the Board of Education as
the week closed. Affected are 1,315
local teachers and other employees of
the public school system.
CURRENT TOPIC CLUB
Mrs. John Nabors was hostess to
the Current Topic Club on Tuesday,
June 1, with all members and several
guests present.
Topics for the afternoon’s study
were read as follows:
“What Can Happen to Your Brain”
—Mrs. George Harris.
“A Plated Article”—Mrs. Theo
Howard.
“A Workable Cue to Happiness”—
Mrs. Hugh Combs.
Mrs. Dick Torrence read an inter-
esting letter from Mrs. Herbert Pool
from Panama Canal Zone. This was
enjoyed by > all.
After the study period, a contest
was held. Mrs. Palmer received
the club prize—an olive dish. Mrs.
Vernon Sockwell, a recent bride and
frequent visitor to the club, received
the guest prize, which was not only a
pretty pitcher, but a box overflowing
with kitchen utensils; the club sur-
prising her with a shower.
The house was very pretty through-
out with vases of wild pink poppies
and lilies. The color scheme being pink
and green was carried out in the re-
freshments. The hostess was assisted
by Misses Elizabeth Torrence and
Marylin Torrence in serving.
Those present were as follows:
Mmes. Geo. and Ben Harris, Hugh
Combs, Walter and Alfred Oswald,
W. H. Robertson, J. R. Palmer, Theo
Howard, J. F. Ford, Dick Torrence,
Virgil Williams, Lee Larsen, Vernon
Sockwell, Misses Sue Snider, Eliza-
beth and Marylin Torrence.
The club will meet with Mrs. Al-
fred Oswald, June 15, at the home of
Mrs. Vernon Sockwell in Valley Mills.
