Wesleyan Service Guild
Reports Last Two Meetings
Wesleyan Service Guild of the
First Methodist Church in Clifton
gives the following report concern-
ing its last two meetings:
On Monday night, August 10, the
Wesleyan Service Guild met in the
home of Ur*. Ralph W. Helm at
414 West 3rd Street, at which time
a covered dish supper was enjoyed.
Following the supper Mrs. W. H.
Tharp presided during the business
session and then turned the meet-
ing over to Mrs. Clyde Turner, pro-
gram leader. Topic for the evening
was “Christian Woman Volunteers
Her Time”.
Roll caU was answered with sen-
tences relating to the use of time,
and Mrs. Turner gave a resume of
the lesson.
Mrs. Ottis Tyler discussed “Use
of Time as a Church Member”.
Visiting in homes, hospitals, and
keeping track of newcomers were
mentioned as opportunities of serv-
ice, as well as singing in the choir,
teaching in church school, playing
the piano, arranging flowers, and
working in the church office.
Miss Elsie Coston spoke of the
influence of the community in
one’s personal life and stressed the
importance and helpfulness of re-
membering the needs of neighbors.
The meeting ended following a
group discussion.
Present were Mesdames Tharp,
Turner, Tyler, Helm, J. G. Fincher,
E. A. Spitzer, L. C. Perry, and B.
W Whitney
On Monday night, September 14,
the Guild met with Mrs. Fincher,
with Mrs. Tharp again in charge of
the business meeting
Program for the evening was
based on the subject, “A New Pur-
pose for a New Age”, with Mrs.
Whitney as leader.
The new purpose of the Wes-
leyan Guild was read in unison,
and Mrs. Homer F. Pumphrey gave
a very interesting talk on the con-
tribution the Bible and Bible read-
ine and study can have on the new
age-
Mrs. C. 0. Bergman told about
“The New Age Emerging. Our Pur-
pose” and gave the statement of
function.
Mrs. Tyler showed a poster sum-
moned to a new age and explained
that the emergence of a new age
was under the hand of God.
A very interesting discussion by
the group concluded the program.
Mrs. Fincher served delicious re-
freshments to Mesdames Tharp,
Pumphrey, Heim, Tyler, Bergman,
Whitney, Roy Hayes, and W. H.
McCown

On Saturday night, September
12, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Anz Jr.
and children, Katharine and Kevin,
honored Mr. Anx’s aunt, Mrs. Wal-
ter Anz, with a surprise birthday
party in their home.
Upon the arrival of the honoree
and her husband she waa greeted
with “Happy Birthday” sung by
everyone present, and a bronze
chrysanthemum corsage, a gift of
Mrs. Anz’s nieces, Mrs. Burton Col-
lins and Mrs. Earl Curlee, was
pinned on her by the hostess. She
also was the recipient of many
lovely birthday gift*, which were
opened and passed around for the
persons present to admire.
Refreshments were served from
the dining table, which was dec-
orated with a lovely floral arrange-
ment. Katharine Anz and Glenda
Thiele served the delicious birth-
day cake, salted nuts, candy, mints,
punch, and coffee.

birthday and wishing her many
happy returns of the day, in addi-
tion to her husband and the Henry

supper meeting of the Wesleyan
Service Guild of the Herring Ave-
nue Methodist Church in Waco at
Wyatt’* Cafeteria there at 8: IS
o’clock on Monday night, Septem-
ber 21.
Mrs. J. T. Hawkins was in charge
of the program, and Mrs. R. M.
Orgaln presented the devotional.
Guest speaker was Mrs. Whitney,
former president of the group, who
gave an address on the subject,
“Motivation of New Age”.

Sets Homecoming
For Sat., October 3
The Meridian High School An-
nual Homecoming will be held Sat-
urday night, October 3.
Those who wish may attend the
Trail Ride Supper sponsored by
the local fire department at 6
o’clock that evening, and then go
to the school auditorium at 7
o’clock for a business meeting and
get-together with former school
mates.
The football game between Whit-
ney and Meridian will be played
at 8 o’clock.
Homecoming officers are Buddy
Brantley, president, and Mrs. Caro-
lyn Moore Reese, secretary.
A cordial invitation is extended
to all ex-students and teachers.
Funeral Services
Held Sept. 16 For
C.H. Gustafson Sr.
Funeral services were held at
1:30 p. m. on Wednesday, Septem-
ber 16 in St. Olaf Lutheran Church,
CranflUs Gap, for Cameron Hous-
ton Gustafson Sr., 91, who died un-
expectedly on Monday, September
14. The Rev. Marvin O. Ottmers,
pastor of St. Olaf Church, conduct-
ed the funeral service. Interment
was at St. Olaf Cemetery under
the direction of Brister Funeral
Home of Meridian.
Pallbearers were Carroll Nelson,
Cedi Bekkelund. Arnold Anz, Mar-
tin Mickelson, Erwin Bekkelund,
and Alfred Huse.
Mr. Gustafson, the son of the
late Charlie and Elina Huse Gustaf-
son, was born Feb. 13, 1913, in the
Norse Community of Bosque Coun-
ty. He had been a member of the
St. Olaf Lutheran Church since
childhood. He was a carpenter and
a fanner.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Myrtle Gustafson, Cranfiils Gap;
one son, Cameron H. Gustafson Jr.,
Waco; five daughters, Linda and
Martha Gustafson, of the home ad-
dress; Mrs. Eugene Dietiker (Hel-
en), San Marcos; Mrs. Henry Alta
An* (Carol Jean), Clifton; Mrs.
David Deiialughter (Mary), Breck-
enridge; three step-daughters, Mrs.
Ray Sims (Lorraine), Amarillo;
Mrs. Calvin Foster (Verna Ruth),
Lubbock; Mrs. Johnnie Johnson
(Ruby Lee), Dallas; two brothers,
Sherman Gustafson and Tommy
Gustafson, Cranfiils Gap; four

aboard the ill-fated Santa Fe Train
that struck a gasoline truck when
passing through your city Septem-
ber 14. .
We want to thank the kind and
good people for coming to our aid
and taking care of us so beautiful-
ly. You could not have done more
for our comfort, and it waa appre-
ciated and talked about far into
the night after we finally got
away.
Especially do we want to thank
the good thoughtful Negroes who
were helpful and there to do any-
thing that needed to be done.
We will remain eternally thank-
ful for having come through a
near tragedy and for your good-

Brady Tuesday afternoon follow-
ing the birth there that day of
their grandson, Gary Whayne
Hicks, a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W.
Hicks, of Dallas. Mrs. Hicks is the
former Miss Eleanor Miles. Mrs.
Miles, a teacher in the Clifton Pub-
lic Schools, had been in Brady
since last Sunday.

Clifton last Saturday afternoon for
New Mexico, where they planned to
enjoy a week’s camping trip. They
expected to do some fishing and
also take a lot of pictures while
away.
Mrs. H. P. Hoff, a resident of
the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Horae,
has been receiving treatment in
the local hospital for a fractured
hip since September 22. Everyone
hope* the fracture soon mends.
Mis* Elsie Sager, who entered
the local hospital for medical treat-
ment on September 18, also under-
went minor surgery there on Sept
ember 22. ft is hoped she soon will
he completely well again
Mrs. S. J. Willenborg, of Star
Route 1, Clifton, thi* week had the
Record sent for the coming school
year to their daughter, Miss Janice
Willenborg, a sophomore student
at The University of Texas in Aus-
tin, as a birthday present

Mr. and Mrs. Don Humphries
and sons, Brett Wallace and Joel
Bennett, have moved from Betten-
dorf, Iowa, to Alton, Illinois, where
Mr. Humphries is employed as an
industrial engineer for the Oita
Mathieson Chemical Plant. Mr*.
Humphries is the former Mias Bev-
erly Harris, a daughter of Mr. and
Mr*. E. B. Harris, of Clifton. For
the past seven yean Mr. Humph-
ries has held a similar porition
with Aleon Aluminum Company at
Davenport, Iowa, and Mrs. Humph-
ries has been associated with the
public libraries in that city.
Dave C. McKinney presently is
idergolng medical treatment in
the local hospital, where he has
been a patient since September 23.
