There have been several
remedies poured forth, the
most ingenious one displayed
by a staff member who
suggested that we invest in
Sargent Sentry Rat Collars
and make every staff member
wear one to ward off rats.
Someone-else suggested we
spit in the face of the humane
society by investing in giant
mouse traps. Someone else
cried, "Rat poison! Rat
poison!” And the list, believe
it or not, goes on.
Perhaps we could have a
rat-catching contest in which
the staffer catching the rat
wins a prize (a free subscript-
ion to the Progress). Howev-
er, Denver Doggett, our
sports editor would hold an
advantage there because of
his "rat" self-portrait in his
sports column (inside). You
know—birds of a feather, etc.
We suppose that paper
attracts animals. Maybe
they’re so nearsighted that
they think they’re snuggling
up to trees or something
(paper comes from trees, we
are told). When my dad used
to publish The Clifton Record
several years ago, we had s'

once. With a little probing
and with several staff mem-
bers running outside scream-
ing bloody murder when the
unidentified thing with a tail
began rustling around near a
wastebasket, we finally spot-
ted the critter. Then editor
