Hay show is beneficial to producers
Why should I enter my hay in a
hay show? This is a question
many producers may be asking
themselves. The answer is that the
results of the analysis run on your
hay will benefit you in deciding
what production practices would
aid you.
Hay entered in the show is
given both a chemical and a
physical score. The physical score
is determined by the stage of
maturity, texture, leafiness, for-
eign material and color. The
chemical score is determines by
the percent crude protien. After
considering both of these a total
•score is given on each bale, which
is used in placing tor the show.
I would encourage you to enter
the hay show which will be held
October 15. Entries are due no
later than Oct. 5. You can enter
the show by taking one conven-
tional square bale, or a tow sack
ful of hay from a round bale to
BradbSrry’s Best in Dublin; or
Anderson Feed, Brandon Feed,
Farmers Milling Co., Poston
Feed, Stockman’s Feed or
Cocanougher Feed in Stephen-
ville. There is no charge or entry
fee.
Hay shows are designed to be
educational and the purpose of the
hay show is to encourage effi-
cient, economical and profitable
production and utilization of high
quality hay. It is important that
producers know all the key
elements that go into making top
quality hay, and are familiar with
hay judging procedures. The qual-
ity of hay varies more than nay
other crop grown in Texas, and
more hay is fed to cattle in Erath
County than any other feed.
The true quality of hay can be
expressed only as feeding value.
Some factors that have proven to
affect quality or feeding value are
species, fertilization, stage of
maturity, and curing and harvest-
ing practivces. I would encourage
vou to enter hav from different
cuttings and different manage-
ment practices, so you can com-
pare the quality.
The actual hay show will take
place on Oct. 5, immediately fol-
lowing a range tour and hambur-
ger supper which will be spon-
sored by the Bosque Soil and
Water Conservation District and
the Stephenville Young Farmers
Chapter. The range tour will be-
gin at 5 p.m. at the TSU Farm Ag
Pavilion. After the meal, Dale
Rollins, wildlife specialist with
the Texas Agricultural Extension
Service, will speak. This will be
followed by announcement of the
hay show winners and presenta-
tion of awards.
ixpayers who wish to claim
tax credits for dependant care
must furnish the name, address,
taxpayer identification number
(social security number or em-
ployer identification number) of
the provider and the amount paid
in dependent care.
Last year (1989) was the first
time such information was re-
quired. Form W-10, Dependent
Care Provider’s Identification and
Certification, can be used to get
the correct information from the
care provider. A record of this
form must be kept in your files. If
the information was requested,
but the care provider did not
comply, keep records to show that
he/she exercised due diligence in
attempting to provide the required
information.
Another change in filing inc-
ome tax forms is a major change*
in 1990 to effect business miles.
All business miles driven will
qualify for 26 cents per mile even
if more than 15,000 miles per
year or 60,000 miles over the life
of the car driven. The top rate for
business miles in excess of 15,000
will be 11 cents in 1989.
Create a habit, stand back and watch
Some 4-H leaders make a habit
of standing back and watching
others.
These leaders are well infor-
med, helpful, capable, en-
thusiastic, and love kids, but they
stand back and watch. They do
this because they believe some-
times it’s good strategy to stand
back and allow others to develop
their own abilities.
It’s simpler and faster for the
person who already knows how to
do something to do it again, but
experience is one of the best
teachers.

WE SERVICE WHAT WE SELL!
For example, if the leader con-
ducts all the club meetings, the
new club president may decide
the leader can do it better, so why
try.
Deciding when help is needed
and when help would stifle
developing abilities in another
person is very important.
Instead of reaching in to do
something, why not give a few
directions to enable members to
handle the job more effectively?
Patience is an important at-
tribute of a good 4-H leader and
goes well with “standing back and
watching” to enable others to
learn.
