educator
retires
CarroU Nichols, a widely
known educator in Hopkins
County for more than 30 years,
wUl retire effective June 30. He
recently requested retirement
at Como-Pickton High School
and the board of trustees ap-
proved it at their monthly
meeting.
Nichols was the vocational
agricultural instructor at
Pickton before the two districts
voted to consoUdate a number
of yeaps ago.
The trustees also accepted
the resignation of Tom NorreU
as coach and social studies
teacher effective at the close of
the school year.
The annual trustee election
for the Como-Pickton district
was ordered for AprU 5, with
Mrs. Polly Randolph named
presiding judge. Lenise MiUer
was named to serve as absentee
voting clerk.
The board voted to rehire
Gary Thompson as elementary
principal-teacher, James
FuUer as high school principal-
teacher, and Diana McGregor
as homemaking teacher for the
198061 school year.
William Hargett, Sue Shadix,
Lewis Ham, Janies FuUer and
Gary Thompson were appointed
to serve as the textbook com-
mittee.
Before adjourning, the board
approved the lunchroom audit
report as presented by the
accounting firm of Oakerson,
Randall, and Arnold, and
authorized payment of bills as
presented.

Supper at lira Community
Center Thursday was enjoyed
by about 25 persons. Those who
missed it should try to be there
next time. Plans for
playground equipment wen
discussed. AU were happy to
have Rosemary and Mutt Hom
from Sulphur Springs at the
meeting.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Weir spent
a few of those cold, snowy days
with the Johnny Johnson family
in Cooper. Bill celebrated his
80th birthday Wednesday, Feb.
13. Several stopped by to see
him and he received gifts,
including two pies and a bir-
thday cake from relatives.
Addie Mae and her brother,
Cap Herman, were in Sulphur
Springs that afternoon to visit
their brother, Oscar Herman,
who was on the sick list, but is
okay now.
Word has been received that
May Allsip, sister of Leslie
Wester, has been transferred
from a Lubbock hospital, where
she has been critically ill for
several weeks, to the LeveUand
hospital, the town in which they
reside, and is Improved.
J. C. and Mary Wester visited
the Willie Davis family Wed-
nesday. Inez and Bruce Hat-
field of Canton were there
Sunday.
Jean and Phillip Holt of
Mesquite visited Lillian Brice
Sunday.
Leslie and Beulah Wester
visited Tray and Carl CoUey in
Paris Tuesday. Glynn Withrow
was at the Westers Friday.
Buddy Tucker, who had eye
surgery in a Paris hospital last
week, is recuperating at his
home.
Mr. and Mrs. Edd Sullivan
visited their brother and wife,
Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Weir, in
Cooper Saturday.
Roy Mosier has been ill at his
home. Herm Weir was ill at
home Saturday.
Wynelle Chapman, a former
resident here, sent very
generous donations to Tira
Church building fund and to
Tira Cemetery Perpetual Care
Fund recently, which are ap-
preciated. Herm Weir has
found a church bell and work
will begin on the church steeple
as soon as weather permits.
The bell will be installed in it
Gay Chapman visited Iva
Rushin and Dave Lawrence in
Cooper last week.
Ernest and Ann Shaw were in
Lone Star last week to visit her
sister, Lucille Russell, and to
attend the wedding of friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Dawson
attended church Sunday at Tira
and ate lunch with her sister,
Crystal Anglin, in Cooper.
Ruth Chapman talked to her
sister near Los Angeles, Calif.
Sunday night and she reported
they had six and one-half inches
of rain in 24 hours. Although
they were o.k., she stated much
damage was done to many
homes there. She also reported
she was packing for a trip to
Catalina to a TOPS retreat for a
few days, which she had been
awarded for outstanding work
in the organization.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Weir,
Lou, LeRoy, Ricky and Jackie
Reaves spent Sunday night
with Bill and Addie Mae Weir.
They all attended church In
Cooper. They and Johnny and
Hazel Johnson honored their
father, Bill, with a delayed
birthday dinner Monday. Cap
Herman, Jean and Debby
Evans and children, Oleta and
Richard Bearden and Mamie
Sullivan were there in the af-
ternoon. Ricky and Jackie
Reaves left there for
Washington, D.C. for two
weeks. He has completed his
medical work and will get his
degree, and be ready for
practice.

Joslin family of Weaver. Joe
Don visited with his father,
William Joslin, Sunday.
Janience, Jana and Kattie
visited with her mother in
Cooper Thursday and visited
her father, Joe Little of Bir-
thright Sunday, where they
were joined by Joe Don later.
Debra, Stephen and Jason
Moore were in Dallas for the
weekend. Billy Moore has been
in Russelville, Ark., and joined
them in Dallas on Sunday.
Davis and Donna Hom were
in Longview last Thursday for
the day.
Wayne England was a
Sunday guest of Leonard and
Martha Kiker.
Opal Stephens is in Memorial
Hospital and is reported doing
better.
Kay Case and children of
Gainesville were recent
visitors of Elvis and Lucille '
Neal.
Maxie and Ellery Johnson
were in Dallas over the
weekend.
