Several family members of
James Anderson Brown met at the
Aiguier Cemetery on Saturday to
erect a monument in his memory.
Elton Brown, a grandson from
Naples, did lots of research and
found out that his grandfather was
buried at Aiguier Cemetery.
Through the help of others, he
located the burial space and also
learned more about his
grandfather’s life.
James Anderson Brown was a
soldier in Company E, 18th Texas
Infantry of the Confederate army.
He was bom Feb. 14, 1832, and
died March 26, 1918. Other
grandsons who attended the
program were Thadis Brown ot
Naples and James Marty Brown of
Simms. Others attending included
step-grandchildren and nieces and
nephews. Ida Veil Groves is one of
the step-grandchildren of this place,
as are Helen Rawlson and Julie
Chapman.
Lucille Spencer was honored
with a birthday party and dinner
Tuesday night. Those helping her
celebrate were Floyd and Shirley
Rogers and Edna Reynolds of
Cooper and Lucy Vaden of Sulphur
Springs. Those from Tira were Ann
Shaw; Jeremy Wright, Edwina
Jones, Mildred Chapman, Leslie

Dallas last week visiting her
daughter and son-in-law, Suzi and
Andy Rogers, and their children.
Polly and John D. McKay were
in Paris on Friday for John D. to
undergo a medical checkup. He
received a good report.
Vera Harrington, Jo Wallace and
Elbe Swindell were in Gafford
Chapel on Wednesday night to at-
tend the Hopkins County Co-
Operative Parish covered dish sup-
per and the United Methodist
Women’s meeting.
Bodie and Nettie Watkins, Marie
and Ernie Aaron and children, Eric,
James and Rickey, were in White
Settlement on Saturday to attend
the funeral services of Stormie
Jones. They are all relatives of
Stormie. They reported that Days
Inn motel furnished rooms for the
visiting relatives and Luby’s
Cafeteria, along with other res-
taurants, supplied food.
Myra and Kelli Bums were in
Sulphur Springs on Saturday night
to attend the wedding of Wendy
Lee McWillams and Michael Keith
Gamer at First Christian Church.
Kelli was a member of the wedding
party.

Viet attended church services at
Reilly Springs United Methodist
Church on Sunday.
Edwin Westbrook, president of
Reilly Springs community center
organization, has begun repair work
on the community center building.
So far it has been done with
volunteer labor.
Paul and Juanita Hudson atten-
ded the stew, musical program and
auction at Wesley United Methodist
Church on Saturday night
Mrs. Ella Sturgeon has been
dismissed from St. Joseph Hospital
in Paris. She is currently staying
with her daughter, Lurline Hutt.

land Gamblin at Regency Terrace
in Sulphur Springs. She is recover-
ing from several days in the

gransons, Chad and Tony Swindell,
for a visit with them and their
father, Mike Swindell of Sulphur
Springs.
Dan and Janie McLarry will be
in San Antonio to watch their son,
Chris McLarry, participate in a soc-
cer tournament.
Jo Wallace visited the arts and
crafts show at the museum park on
Saturday.
Patricia Dorman is back in
school this week following a few
days in Hopkins County Memorial
Hospital.
Deana and Tony Smith. They were
served chips and dips, a relish tray,
coldeuts, vegetable rollups, nuts,
hot cider, tea and coffee, brownies
and birthday cake.
Last Saturday, Marsha Withrow
met her sister Dana Garland and
other mambers of her family of
Dallas and attended the funeral of
her uncle, Jack Smith, in Nacog-
doches.
Gerldene Howell of Garland
spent last weekend with her
parents, Jerry and Janette Willis.
Others who visited were J.C. and
Dorthea Denny and Alford and
Lois Willis.
Bill and Fay Stanley spent last
week in Plainview, visiting Fay’s
niece and family.
Carl and Weta Rumsey of
Chesapeake, Va., arrived Saturday
to visit the Stanleys and camp in
their bus at their camping place.
Lillie Thompson Patton died
Friday in Jal, N.M. She was buried
Monday in Lawn Haven Cemetery
in San Angelo. Survivors include a
son and his wife and several
grandchildren and great-
grandchildren. A local survivor is a
sister-in-law, Oleta Lancaster.
Lawrence and Bessie Goldsmith
are spending the week in Bronson,
Mo.
Bill and Juanita Sloan had dinner
with Francis and Verda Withrow on
Saturday night and spent the night.
They were on their way to Chicago
to his work for several months.
Francis and Morris Edwards came
to visit them.

Style Show ‘Planned

Sheedy. The show, “Christmas in Central Park,” will begin at 7 p.m.
Tiiesday, Nov. 27, at the Civic Center. The cost of admission is $5.
Tickets may be purchased from any member or at the door. Hors
d’oeuvres will be served and door prizes will be awarded. Proceeds
will benefit community projects.

Thousands of lights to greet
Christmas in Sulphur Springs

Used to be if kids were bad, they
got a switch from Santa.
At 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, Santa
will throw a switch that will light
thousands of bulbs and send a
charge of excitement through the
throng of people gathered at
Heritage Square.
The Lighting of the Square will
be the culmination of a program
begun earlier this year, when
school children and other citizens
donated pennies to buy bulbs for
' the histone Courthouse.
The program spread throughout
the square, and merchants involved
in the Main Street Project also pur-
chased lights to decorate their
stores during the holiday season.
The Nov. 30 ceremony will

A Sulphur Springs Middle
School bandm ember, Kara
Burgstahler, was chosen for the first
chair in the top band during All-
Region Band competition on Satur-
day. Burgstahler plays an oboe.
Other middle school students
selected to pasricipate in All-
Region Band are Julie DeVries,
French horn; Kara Altenbaumer.

bone; Brian Berry, trombone; and
Desiree’ Resting, percussion.
The students will play in a con-
cert with the All-Region Band at a
later date.

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s
Posse will be making tours of the
square. Plenty of hay bales will be
available for folks to sit on while
enjoying supper and songs.

and Masonic activities.
On Tuesday night they attended
the Mount Vernon Order of the
Eastern Star chapter regular meet-
ing. Both served as pro-tems. This

meeting of the Masons, honoring
the Masonic widows. Carrol and
Nada Crouch also attended. The
program was presented by the a
guest speaker. Zelda Ward was an
honoree.
On Saturday night they attended
a past matrons and patrons meeting
’ in Deport. Wanda was elected first
vice president.
The Rural Progress Club met
Wednesday night in the community
center for a covered dish
Thanksgiving dinner. Forty-two
people attended the meeting.
The Sulphur Springs High
School stage band presented a con-
cert program. The group played
various types of music. There are
16 members in the band. Each
member showed great character
and courtesy.
The group was led by Gary Rest-
ing and Ben Scarborough.
On Saturday afternoon, Pearl
Hale and Hazel Huie attended a
memorial for James Anderson
Brown, Civil War veteran and
pioneer citizen of Hopkins County.
He died in 1918 in Tira.
After placing a Civil War
monument in Aguire Cemetery, five
generations of descendants
gathered at North Hopkins cafeteria
For a reception.
Others from the area attending
the memorial were Arnold and Mae
Moore of Nelta, Billy and Roma
Skidmore of Hagan sport, Julia
Chapman of Sulphur Springs and
Amber Price of Mesquite. Others
attended from Plano, Houston,
Naples, Santa Fe, Cooper and Sims.
At a recent PTO club meeting,
the Beta Club presented a program.
Eda Reyes introduced Beta mem-
bers. Pledges were inducted into
the group. Those participating in
the ceremony were Mrs. Watkins,
Sharon Allan, Toby Forester,
Mandy Wright and Sharon
Lunsford.
Senior Beta Club members are
Karen Domer, Toby Forester,
Sharon Lunsford, Stacy Ogren, Eda
Reyes and Mandy Wright. Junior
club members are Sharon Allan,
Jennifer Hume, Michelle Norfleet,
Stacie Reed, Susan Smith and
Jason Tubb.
Those inducted into the group
are Joe Bockemehl, Kathy Brewer,
Robin Cannon, Collin Foster, An-
gie Holland, Pete Rose, Melissa
Sapein and Missy Tubb.
Evelyn Ault is recovering but is
not up to par yet. Bill Ault is har-
vesting a bumper crop of pecans.
The Baptist church had a
Thanksgiving covered dish meal.
Thiry-one people attended. Archie
Stone, interim pastor, led worship
services.
Patricia Domer suffered a back
injury last Wednesday and has been
taking it easy. It is hoped that she
sustained no permanent damage.
Jana Joslin joined her mother
and Katy in church.
On Thursday afternoon, the Van-
ces were surprised at about 5:30
p.m. by a group of Brownies bear-
ing a meal of turkey, beans,
potatoes, cranberry sauce, fruit
salad and cake. The meal was
delivered by Deanna Harris,
Rebecca Caldwell and Jaci Jaggers.
They were accompanied by Tena
Jaggers and Gill Jaggers.
Other Brownies working on the
project were Mallory Morton,
Vanessa Chambers, Amanda
Thompson and Megan Mayo.
The group meets Thursday in the
Baptist church.

Homemade cake and punch was
served. Honorees were presented

Tommy Peugh and his group
sang gospel on Nov. 12. They will
return on Dec. 10 to sing again.
Two Sulphur Springs High
School football players found their
cars burglarized at the fieldhouse
parking lot Saturday morning after
returning from the bi-district game
in Tyler.
Police received the first burglary
report at 12:52 a.m. Saturday.
Burglars reportedly broke the pas-
senger side door glass on the
vehicle, then stole numerous stereo
items. Reported taken were a Ken-
wood receiver, valued at $300; a
Profile crossover, valued at $120;
two Kenwood speakers, valued at
$120; a 720-amp Kenwood
amplifier, valued at $230; a 520-
amp Kenwood amplifier, valued at
$100; and two 10-inch Yamaha
speakers, valued at $250. Damage
to the door glass was estimated at
$100.
The second report was received
by police at 2:18 a.m. Again,
burglars entered the vehicle after
breaking out a pasenger side win-
dow. Reported stolen from the
second vehicle were a Sony AM-
FM compact disc player, valued at
$450; a Kenwood KAC 520
amplifier, valued at $75; and a
Garth Brooks compact disc, valued
at $15. Damage to the window was
estimated at $100. Damage caused
to the vehicle dash and console by
burglars was estimated at $300.
Two additional automobile
burglaries were reported Friday,
both at a restaurant on East Shan-
non Road.
In the first burglary, police
received a report at 7:45 p.m. that a
cloth purse and credit cards had
been stolen from an automobile in
the restaurant parking lot. Burglars
apparently entered the automobile
after breaking out a door glass. The
burglary reportedly occurred bet-
ween 7:05 p.m. and 7:43 p.m.
Damage to the glass was estimated
at $100.
Police received the second report
at 9 p.m. Friday. The owner of the
car said she was in the restaurant
for about two minutes. When she
returned to her unlocked car, the
woman told police, she found miss-
ing a 35mm camera, valued at $75;
a blue and gray purse, valued at
$15; a PULSE card; $600 in cash;
and six credit cards.
