Aleen Skeen underwent eye
surgery at McCuistion Medical
Center in Paris Tuesday. She
will be there about five days.
Jim Carroll Martin entered
Memorial Hospital Monday for
surgery scheduled Tuesday.
Nine of the 10 senior class
members of North Hopkins left
Tuesday on their annual senior
trip to Fin and Feathers in
Oklahoma. They will be gone
until Sunday. Seniors are Sandy

command of the Student
Council at Sulphur Springs High
School during the week.

the new officers. They are Jeff

parliamentarian; and Suzy

A NEWCOMER to the
political scene, Mike Holbert,
has won the Democratic Party
nomination as sheriff in Delta
County, which is tantamount to
election. Holbert received 1,051
votes to 563 for incumbent
Sheriff Benny Fisher and 110 for
Joe Kelso. In the hotly-
contested race for Delta County
tax assessor-collector, LaVem
Lytle posted 668 votes to 599 for
Pauline St. Clair and 445 for
Barbara Huie. Mrs. Lytle and
Mrs. St. Clair will meet in the
June 7 run-off.
THE EIGHT graduating
seniors at Miller Grove High
School are flying high. They
took off from D-FW Airport
Monday morning for a senior
trip to Honolulu. Donna White,
Michelle Prater, Lori Hall, Lisa
Garmon, Delane Malone,
Stephen Sparks, Chuck Regan
and Ronny Haygood were
accompanied by Mrs. June
Watson and Mr. and Mrs.
Jimmy Day. They will return
May 21. The students raised
money for their trip in various
ways, from hauling hay to
sponsoring benefit dinners.
BILL ALLISON, 13, son of
Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Allison,
took a few days off during the
weekend for an emergency
appendectomy at Memorial
Hospital. He has been
dismissed to his home and
reported doing nicely.
MR. AND Mrs. Robert
Ramirez of Commerce an-
nounce the birth of a son at
11:38 p.m. Wednesday, May 7,
in Memorial Hospital.
A TRADITION that has
survived through the years will
be repeated at Miller Grove on
May 24. That's the annual
school-closing Hopkins County
Stew. Superintendent Jim
Bassham thinks that Miller
Grove is the only rural school
that still carries out this
tradition. It used to be a
highlight of all of the many
schools in the county.
BILLY HARRY, who is
normally in high spirits for a
Brangus sale, had the wind
knocked out of Ms sails before
the event held in Sulphur
Springs Saturday. A prized cow
— one he believed would have
brought (10,000 — was killed a
couple of days before the sale
when the trailer in which it was
being transported overturned
just west of Sulphur Springs.
BILL CARAWAY, D-
Houston, has withdrawn from a
race to become Speaker of the
Texas House of Represen-
tatives and thrown his support
to John Bryan of Dallas.
Caraway is a brother of Bob
Caraway of Sulphur Springs.

7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22, in
the Miller Grove school gym-
nasium.
Reilly Springs
memorial set
The annual memorial and
homecoming day will be held at
the Reilly Springs United
Methodist Church on Sunday,
May 18, with the service
beginning at 11 a.m.
The guest speaker will be
Judge Neil McKay of Houston.
Eugene and Julia Attlesey will
be in charge of the
congregational singing.
The special music will be
presented by Mrs. Diane
Lummas.
Others participating in the
program will be Kay Strong, the
Rev. Larry Baxley and the Rev.
Bob May.
Wallace Swindell will serve
as master of ceremonies.
Following the program, a
basket lunch will be served in
the Community Center.
Court activity
takes upswing
Fifty-three civil and two
criminal cases were filed in
District Clerk Ola Beckham’s
office in April, reflecting an
upsurge in activity. During the
month, the court official noted
that 31 civil cases were disposed
of as were 20 criminal actions.
Five child support contempt
cases also were filed during the
month.
The district clerk’s office
collected and disbursed
817,375.20 in child support
payments.
The clerk deposited 81,072.67
in the trust fund, raising the
total to 865,964.59.
