The UJ>. government invests
$12.75 per 4-H member per
year, and it’s “worth every
penny”.
4-H is the largest federally
funded nan-school educational
program. Some 5.4 million boys
and giris take part in 4-H
throughout the nation, with'
more than 160,000 of these in
Texas.
Cost-effectiveness of 4-H is
made possible through a rare
blend of cooperation between
government agencies on the
fpieral, state and local levels
.plus tremendous private sector
.support. For every dollar of
public funding received byi-H,
the private sector contributes
about five dollars, either in
funds or in-kind.
Volunteers are the keys to the
continuing success and
relevancy of 4-H. There are
-more than 580,000 volunteers
Throughout the U.S., with some
22,000 serving in Texas.
According to a scientifically
designed study of volunteers in
three states, the average
volunteer contributes the
equivalent of $1,124 in time,
supplies, gasoline and related
materials each year. If ex-
tended nationally at a con-
servative estimate of $1,000 per
volunteer, the total value of 4-H
volunteer contributions would
be more than $580 million
annually.
To place the worth of 4-fl in
perspective, compare the cost
of 4-H membership at $12.75
annually to the cost of main-
taining a youth committed to a
public institution at an average
cost of $17,000 per year.
.A recent evaluation of the
impact of 4-H in an inner-city
ccn&nunity in Detroit showed a
60 percent reduction in juvenile
(Tin* in the immeditd area of
the local 4-H center. This study
showed that in one year, 4-H
saved taxpayers more than
$200,000 in this one census tract
alone. Even more important
are the non-monetary values
inherent in exposing
youngsters to constructive
activities and improving their
self-image through,4-H.
For more information about
the 4-H program, contact your
county Extension office, 127
Jefferson, 8853443 or 8853726.

“If you’d like to break the
tobacco habit,” says pastor Bill
Dailey of the Seventh day
Adventist Church, “take heart.
Thousands of lifelong smokers
have done just that. They’ve
done it without drugs, filters or
gimmicks. It can help even a
heavy smoker break the habit
in only five days.”
The Five-Day Plan will be
offered again in Sulphur
Springs at the Public Library
7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan
through Jan. 10. An enrollment
fee of $10 will be charged to
cover expenses.
Dailey said that the Five-Ddy
Plan, originated by Seventh-
Li UC
[>hur
day Adventists in 1962, has
helped more than 13 million
individuals to kick the weed
since its inception. Some 13,500
sessions have been held with a
ratio of 50 percent becoming
free from the smoking haibit
within a two-year period after
enrolling in the plan. The
program went worldwide in the
mid 1960s.
Pastor Dailey explained,
“You’ll be given a simple
program of diet and exercise
that helps clean the nicotine out
of your system and reduce the
craving for tobacco. You’ll
learr what to do when you feel a
craving to smoke, and how to
strengthen your will power plus
avoid nervousness and
overeating."
Many Five-Day Plan
graduates say the program has
changed their whole lives,
helped them feel better than
they have in years, added new
zest and enjoyment to living
and even made food taste
better, Dailey added..
“We don’t guarantee that you
will stop smoking if you enroll
in the Five-Day Plan, but we
can tell you that a large per
centage of those attending have
quit permanently,” said
Dailey.
Anyone interested in
enrolling may call 886-4991.

"We're watching real dose.”
