Tipps, son of Mrs. Syble Mil-
burn, Route 5, recently com-
pleted training as a cannoneer
under the One Station Unit
Training Program at Ft. Sill,
Okla. He is a 1974 graduate
of Sulphur Springs High
School.
ANOTHER WILDCAT oil
test near Commerce, off High-
way ll, is scheduled to get
underway soon. The rig used
by W. D. Hinton on the Jack
Ogle lease near Commerce,
which was declared a dry hole
last Monday, will be utilized in
the effort. The Smackover try
on the Ogle land bottomed at
9,389 feet.
MAC McMULLAN of Chan-
nelview is reported improved
ofter being seriously ill in St.
Joseph Hospital in Houston.
He is a former band director
at Sulphur Springs High
School.
e ROBERT WEST of Dallas,
a former Texas Power & Light
Company manager here, vis-
, ited briefly in Sulphur Springs
Tuesday. He said the immedi-
ate purpose of his stop was to
bring Ene Ashcroft the pro-
cessed meat from two deer
Ashcroft killed ou a recent
hunting trip in South Texas.
West is now on the staff of
the Texas Utilities organiza-
tion in Dallas.
HOPKINS COUNTY resi-
dents purchase 628,234 in U. S.
Savings Bonds during Septem-
ber to bring their total acquisi-
tions for the year to 8253,012.
This represents 77 per cent ol
the county’s 1976 goal of
$330,000.

the Civic Center Board were
in Marshall Monday checking
that city’s progress with its

ing built with the help of an
Economic Development Ad-

cluded Lowell Cable, board
chairman, Walter Helm and
County Judge L. E. Goldsmith.

grims to Plains, Ga., were Mr.
and Mrs. J. E. Mapes of
Yantis and Mr. and Mrs.

Sunday, Nov. 21, while re-
turning from Florida. They
were among several hundred
persons who watched Presi-
dent-elect Jimmy Carter and
his family arrive for church
services. Mr. and Mrs. Woods
completed their trip home by
plane Friday.

Texas Tech University Sunday
after spending the Thanksgiv-
ing holidays at home formed a

LOCAL FRIENDS have re-
ceived reports of the death of
Fred Lewis Branom, who was
reared in the Emblem commu-
nity. He was a retired steel
company employe in Ama-
rillo, where he died and was
buried. He was the son of the
late “Captain Billy” Branom,
a Civil War veteran.
GENE PREUSS observed
Wednesday that he still yearns
for cigarets almost two years
after giving them up as a re-
sult of a New Year’s resolution.
“I guess I am a tobaccoholic,"
he explained. “My goal has
been just to keep putting them
off from one minute to the
next.’’,

model car driven by Leslie
Eric Hamilton, Route One, in
the 700 block of Lee Street.

Police had their hands full
Friday making seven arrests.
A local man was taken into
protective custody. He was
found near Ideal Courts walk-
ing around and talking
strangely.
A Cumby man and a Tyler
man were arrested for dis-
orderly conduct and public in-
toxication. A Kyle man was
arrestel on a charge of public
intoxication.
A local man, a Garland man,
and a Dallas resident were
charged with possession of
marijuana following a traffic
accident.
All are presently in jail await-
ing arraignment.

Firemen were called to the
scene of three minor fires
Thursday.
Firemen from Fire Station
No. l were on duty 14 minutes
when they were called to a
grass fire in the Brinker com-
munity. s
Tbe tire was out when they
arrived, blit an acre of land
owned bv David Fite was
burned Before tbe fire went
out. %,
At 2:28 cp. m. firemen re
ceived a call on a grass fire
nine miles west on Airport
Road.
When they arrived they
found an unidentified man
burning a brash pile and put
out the fire. Firemen were
on duty 18 minutes.
Firemen from Fire Station
No. 2 responded to a general
alarm Thursday at the home
of Mrs. Eddie Mabe, 634 Tate
Street.
A grease fire in the oven
was out by the time firemen
arrived on the scene. There
was no damage reported.
