Western US. reCaffng route for raiC riding coupCe
By MARY GRANT
News-Telegram Staff
Mr. and Mrs. T.B. Blackbume of
Sulphur Springs wanted to see the
countryside between Denver and
Salt Lake City — so they took the
train.
They also rode the rails for more
than 6,000 miles aboard Amtrak
from Dallas to Chicago to Denver
to Salt I^ake City to Portland to Los
Angeles to San Antonio to Dallas.
“That trip from Denver to Salt
Lake was beautiful, just gorgeous,”
Mrs. Blackbume said, recalling the
trip throughout the western section
of the United States.
Her husband, a fan of trains, in-

itiated the idea for the excursion,
contacted Amtrak and worked out
the schedule.
“I like to ride the train,” he said.
Mrs. Blackbume added, “We did
the Eurorail pass in Europe. We
loved that One year our children
gave us the Britrail and we loved
that.”
But, the couple noted, travelers
who itch for a fast pace might not
find a train trip entertaining. “It is
so slow,” she said.
They noted that the trip from San
Antonio to Dallas, the final lap of
their trip, clacked along for seven
hours.
“We averaged about 40 miles
per hour,” he added.
All aboard began in Dallas April
12 when the train moved away
from Union Station bound for the
Windy City. Once in Chicago, 14
coaches were stretched behind the
locomotives for the trip to Denver
and Salt Lake City. “They were
split in Salt Lake City — some
went to San Francisco, some to Las
Vegas, some to Los Angeles and
some to Portland,” he said.
“We spent the night in Portland
and then caught the train down the
Pacific coast,” he added, speaking
of a leg of the journey that the
couple said they especially enjoyed
that wound down the western
seaboard of the United States.
