The most experienced member of
the Hopkins County Memorial Hos-
pital board of directors went down in
defeat Saturday in the closest of three
local elections.
Only 77 votes separated first place
and fourth place in the election,
which saw incumbents Stephen Bon-
ner and Vaden Richey win re-election
and newcomer Dawn Sheffield being
selected for her first term on the pan-
el.
Charles Gilreath, who has served
on the HCMH board for more than 20
years, was narrowly defeated in the
race for three at-large seats. Bonner
was first with 1,594 votes, Richey
second at 1,556 and Sheffield third
with 1,555 votes. Gilreath was only a
handful of ballots behind, receiving
1,517 votes.
Despite the narrow margin,
Gilreath was gracious in defeat
“I enjoyed serving on the board for
22 years, but we’ve got a good board
and they’ll do a good job,” he said.
“I’ve learned two things — nobody is
irreplaceable on any board. Dawn
will make a good member — she’s an
intelligent person — and they’ve got
four other good board members.
“It’s in good hands. I’m going to
miss it, but they’ll do a good job.”
Sheffield, a registered nurse, has
spent many years working at the hos-
pital as a nurse, coordinator and
supervisor.
She was reported to be the first
woman elected to the board, but Hop-
kins County Memorial Hospital
administrative secretary Elizabeth
Mitchell said a woman was elected in
1963 but resigned for personal rea-
sons before completing her term.
Sheffield was unavailable for com-
ment.
Bonner was elected to his fourth
term on the panel, while Richey was
running for re-election after being
elected in 1993.
