-3fraryto the declared popular will of the country. Is it
Tiot however due to that "frankness which the President
says shall ever attach to his conduct of the Executive
functions" to remove every doubt in regard to his course
upon a question that is now agitating both. hemispheres?
We see in the Columbia Planter a series of resolutions
adopted by the citizens of Matagorda on thesubjtct of An-
nexation. This great measure is strongly urged upon the
consideration of the present Congress and the President.
It is believed that the election of Mr Poll; has authorita-
tively decl .red the wisbs of ifbe people of the U. States
and consequently the coursaof that government upon this
question ; and. that it now only remains with us to decide
the question. It is recommended that mettings be held in
the several counties and the members of Congress instruc-
ted on this subject We will publish the proceedings in
our next. In conformity with this movement a mass
meiting of the citizens of Brazoria county is called by
many respectable individuals whose names are published.
The Planter sa's that Mr. Sweney has made between
65 and 70 hhds of Sugar and oi'er 100 barrels of mol.is-
seSj besides 175 bales of cotton. The sugar is fully equal
H not suptrior to the best Louisiana. Maj. J. P. Cald-
well is also largely concerned in sugar making.
fCf'There appears to be a very slight impiovement .in
the cotton market. Very fine grades are in demand for
the North there being a very grtat scarcity of such de-
scription. Taxes in Brazoria. The Planter has received
statements from the SherifTof Brazoria shewing that the
taxes collected in that county in the years '37 '38 '39
and '40 amounts to 867533 48.
1164 bales of domestic goods were exported from Bos-
ton in one week ending 23d ult. to the South Seas East
Indies and other places.
r
The poor Shirt Makers of Liverpool. Under
this head the New Orleans Bee credits an article to the
LiverpooLMerctiry in which a poor seamstress had ap-
plied to the Court of requests for the sum ol 10 shillings
the amount of her bill for shirt making. The investiga-
tion brought to light the important fact that she was paid
at the rate of 2 shillings and 8 pence per dozen or a
fraction over 2 pence halfpenny per shirt. The learned
commissioner taking all things into consideration ordered
that the half starved creature should be paid 7s. 5d.t and
her costs; deductingiherefore.it would seem 2s. 7d. from
the above price "upon the ground that the shirts were bad-
ly made."
In speaking of the subject of Annexation the Vindica-
tor finds objections to the late treaty negotiated by Messrs.
Van Zandt and Henderson but says that a treaty "secur-
ing to our citizens a liberal share of public domain for
literary purposes a guaranty for slave property and ad-
mission to the Union as a State on the same condition as
other States have been admitted' &c will meet with his
concurrence.
I
A writer in the Tropic has given an estimate of tho
number ot white persons over twenty years old in the U.
States who cannot read and write. The whole number of
such is 601916. According to this statement Con-
necticut is the most enlightened Slate in the Union
and North Carolina the least so. In the former 1-6
of one per cent of the population are in the above
named predicament and in the latter 11 per cent. The
next to North'Carolina is Tennessee (9 per cent ) ; and
the next most enlightened is New Hampshire (J- per cent )
The ratio in all the New England Slates is less than one
per cent in all the rest more.
In the city of New York Polk's majority was 1915;
and Wright's 3340.
Death of Murrell. The death of this ''land pirate"
is announced as having lately taken place in Pikesville
Tenn. A pretty. strong proof that he is not living in
Texas. "He died of consumption and denied lo the last
moment of his life that he was guilty of the principal
charges against him."
"a3The Arkansas Intelligencer says that 7 or 800
wagons have passed through that place this summer with
not less than 5000 souls being bound for Texas and well
provided with farming implr tneht? and having immense
numbers of cattle and stock of every description.
Core" tor Croup. From the Journal of Health.)
When a child -is taken' with the croup instantly apply
cold water ice waier if possible suddenly and freely to
the neck and chest with a sponge. The breathing will
instantly be relieved So soon as possible let the sufferer
drink as much as it can; then wipe it dry coter it up
warm and soon a quiet skmhor will relievpthe parents'
anxit-ty and h?ad the heart in thankfulness to the power
which has given to the pure gushing fountain such medi-
cal qualities.
