Two police officers suffered
minor injuries about 3 p.m.
Thursday when their patrol car
was involved in a collision while
responding to an alarm at a
local bank.
According to DPS Trooper
Jack Counts, the patrol car was
driven by Patrolman J. Paul
Sides, 21, and was southbound
on Gladys Alexander Drive with
its emergency equipment (red
lights and siren) on as it
responded to a reported alarm
at First National Bank on
Mockingbird Lane.
As the 1980 four-door patrol
car turned east on Main Street,
it was in collision with a 1979
two-door coupe driven by
Michael Wayne Gowin, 18, of
Emory who was westbound on
Main Street.
Heavy damage was reported
to both vehicles.
Sides was taken to Memorial
Hospital with a possible
shoulder injury and was treated
and released.
Cpl. Ricky Roberts, a
passenger in the patrol car,
reported being bruised but did
not go to the hospital.
Gowin was not reported in-
jured.
The alarm at the bank had
been accidently set off by
employees according to Rick
Palmer, bank president.
Brief notes: A couple of
newly started business en-
terprises in Sulphur Springs
obviously point to a growth
factor...Larry Key recently
started a mobile catering
service, making the rounds of
the town to dispense doughnuts,
sweets, sandwiches, etc...And
others report an ice cream
truck is touring the residential
neighborhoods to ac-
commodate children and others
desiring refreshments...Both
local Methodist pastors,
Gaither L. Day and George
Topper, are expected to be
reassigned to Sulphur Springs
at the annual conference
beginning Sunday in Dallas, but
at least one area minister is due
to draw a church in West
Texas...The list of teachers
with experience in one and two-
teacher schools is growing
shorter. Mrs. W.S. (Ruth) Long
and Freeman Parish, who
began their careers before the
Big War in two-teacher schools,
wrapped up long and successful
careers at North Hopkins at the
close of the term...J.J. Smiddy,
who also retired from North
Hopkins after a long career,
started in a school with a larger
student population...They have
assisted in providing good,
solid education while teaching
sound values to many
youngsters during their
combined 111 years in the
classrooms.
More notes: Forrest Gregg,
the former great Sulphur
Springs, SMU and Green Bay
football player and current
head coach of the Cincinnati
Bengals, is scheduled to stop
over in this area during the
early part of June. Coach and
Mrs. Gregg are slated to bring
Forrest Jr. to Dallas to enroll in
SMU, where he recently was
awarded a football scholar-
ship...Joe Ardis, of the Ardis,
Tutt and Peugh Construction
Company in Sulphur Springs,
reports he and his partners are
about to wind up a 104-unit
apartment complex in Sher-
man. In fact, 90 of the apart-
ments have been rented...An
investment firm already is
dickering for the apartments
and the Sulphur Springs men
are taking a serious look at the
offer...And they are negotiating
to pre-sell another apartment
complex on the drawing
boards...Ardis foresees a spurt
in building with the lowering of
interest rates... Winnsboro
School District voters will get
to offer their opinions at the
polls on June 17 in regard to a
proposed $5.5 million bond
issue...At Greenville, bids for a
new high school complex
topped the $10 million level.
Last notes: Ground has been
broken for the new post office
building at Pickton. Post-
master Frat Davis is excited
about the long-needed building
and also is thinking about
dedication services once it is
campleted...Daughters of the
second postmaster still reside
at Pickton and he is thinking it
would be nice to get them in-
volved...Incidentally, the
Pickton post office was
established in 1881, so the new
building can be tied into a
centennial celebration for the
community...In Sulphur
Springs, Postmaster Jim
Collins has been breaking in
new personnel...So, if two
people are seen on a single
route, one is learning to become
a substitute...Randy Adair has
been interviewed for a couple of
trade coaching jobs in the
Dallas area and is looking
forward to returning to
metroplex to begin his career.
He’s winding up work on a
master’s degree at Monroe in
advance of brother Greg’s
acceptance of a track
scholarship to the same
university.
