Allen Lee Stewart
Memorial services tor Allen Lee Stewart.
41, of Irving, formerly of Sulphur Springs
were held at 4 p.m. Sunday. June 3. in West
Oaks Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Put
nam officiating.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were
Bryan Roberts, Bobby Roberts. Jimmy
Evans, Gregg Nestor, Ted Townsend and
David Baxter.
Mr. Stewart died early Friday in Dallas.
He was born in Dallas, on April 7. 1960.
the son of Richard and Linda Nell Lung
Stewart. He was adopted and raised by his
grandparents. Homer D. and Nina Faye Bish-
op Stewart.
Mr. Stewart was employed as a salesman
with Able Sandblasting Company in Dallas.
He was a 1978 graduate of Sulphur Springs
High School and a graduate of Paris Junior
College. He w as a member of Wesley United
Methodist Church in Sulphur Springs.
Survivors include his father of Irving; four
brothers, James Stewart of Sulphur Springs,
H.D. Stewart Jr. of Brashear. and Jason Stew-
art and Randell Stewart, both of Lake Dallas;
two sisters, Sylvia Stewart of Denton and
Barbara Barsh of Irving.
Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by his
grandparents, Homer D. and Nina Faye
Stewart.
Frances Long
Funeral services for Frances Long, 87. of
Corinth, formerly of Sulphur Springs, were
held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 3, in West Oaks
Funeral Chapel.
Interment followed in Forest Academy
Cemetery with Michael Duke, Matt Long,
Dennis Morris and John Bradberry serving as
pallbearers.
Mrs. Long died at 1:20 a.m. Friday, June 1,
in Denton Regional Medical Center in Den-
ton, following a brief illness.
She was bom in Kram on Feb. 5, 1914. the
daughter of James Milton and Victoria Tem-
pleton Morris. She married L.L. “Boby"
Long in 1940 in Sulphur Springs. He preced-
ed her in death in 1992.
Mrs. Long was employed as a licensed
vocational nurse with Hopkins County
Memorial Hospital, and later with Gaston
Avenue Episcopal Hospital in Dallas.
She was a graduate of Hopkins County
Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She
was also a member of Wesley United
Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son. Tommy Long
of Mesquite; one daughter, Peggy Gill of
Corinth; two grandsons, Michael Duke of
Corinth and Matthew Long of Mesquite; and
two great-granddaughters, Paige and Mikay-
la Duke.
Mrs. Long was also preceded in death by
seven brothers and sisters.
A.J. Acker Jr.
Graveside funeral services for A.J. Acker
Jr.. 79, of Winnsboro, a former resident of
communities in southeast Hopkins County,
were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 4. in
Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas with the
Rev. Billy Condrey officiating.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Hamm, Mike Gib-
son. Lester Arnold, Harry Daniels, Colter
Acker and Terry Bates.
Mr. Acker died Friday, June 1, in a Winns-
boro nursing home.
He was born on Aug. 17, 1921, in Wood
County, to A.J. Acker and Cora Edwards
Acker. He married Mae Lindahl on Dec. 31,
1950. She preceded him in death on Dec. 27,
2000.
Mr. Acker was a longtime resident of
Winn.'.boro, moving there in 1969. He had
formerly lived in Hopkins County in the
Como, Pickton and Pine Forest areas.
He served in the Army during World War
II. He was a carpenter in the construction
business. He was also of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Russell Acker
of Winnsboro; four sisters, Mary Tennison,
Nadine Kennedy, Minnie Bee Jordan and
Marie Willoughby, all of Hawkins; and two
grandchildren. Colter Acker and J.D. Acker,
both of Winnsboro.
Mr. Acker was also preceded in death by
his parents and one son, James Michael Ack-
er.
Memorials may be made to the American
Cancer Society or Cypress Basin Hospice.
Larry D. Moreland
Graveside memorial services for Larry
Dwain Moreland, 58, of Sulphur Springs
were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, in Hor-
ton Cemetery in Delta County.
Mr. Moreland died at 6:15 a.m. Saturday,
June 2, in Hopkins County Memorial Hospi-
tal.
He was born in Horton on Feb. 20, 1943,
the son of Marvin Moreland and Ruth Wil-
son. He married Janet Marie Hodge on Jan.
20, 1961, in Commerce. She survives.
Mr. Moreland worked in Sulphur Springs
as a building contractor for over 20 years,
and later in small engine repair. He was a
member of the First Baptist Church.
Other survivors include mother and step-
father. Ruth and James Wilson of Commerce;
one son, Tony Moreland of Rockwall; one
daughter, Janna Kay Moreland Redington of
Como; a brother, Bobby Moreland of Paris;
one sister, Judy Mills of Mount Vernon; and
four grandchildren. Amber Moody of McK-
inney, Brody Potts of Sulphur Springs, and
Anthony and Tanner Moreland, both of Ter-
rell.
Mr. Moreland was preceded in death by his
father in 1983; one son, Marvin Dwain
Moreland on November of 1982; and one sis-
ter, Vikki Talley.
Thelma Schrimsher Carter
Graveside services for Thelma Schrimsher
Carter, 78, of Sulphur Springs were held at 2
p.m. Tuesday, June 5, in Emory City Ceme-
tery.
Mrs. Carter died at 6:18 p.m. Thursday,
May 31, in Hopkins County Memorial Hos-
pital.
She was bom in Rains County on Sept. 2,
1922, the daughter of Harry Tracy and Flo-
rence Emma Robertson Schrimsher.
Mrs. Carter attended Rains County
schools. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one sister, Nell
McGowan of Irving.
Omer Ray
Funeral services for Omer Ray, 89, of Sul-
phur Springs, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday,
June 5, in Murray-Orwosky Funeral Chapel.
Interment were in the Forest Academy
Cemetery with Dick Williams, Richard Teer,
Travis Owens, Ned Tanton. Robert Jones and
Jerry Gilliam serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Ray died at 12:15 a.m. Sunday, June 3,
in Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.
He was bom in Sulphur Springs on Oct. 1,
1911, to Claude and Lillie May Timmons
Ray. He married Margaret Vernell Jennings
on Aug. 8, 1936, in Sulphur Springs. She sur-
vives.
Mr. Ray was retired from from the AP
Green Company. He was a member of the
Elmridge Baptist Church. He was also a 50-
year Mason.
Other survivors include one son, Billy Ray
of Channelview; one brother, Elwood Ray of
Tyler; two grandchildren, Robin Morgan and
Rebecca Lewis; and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Ray was preceded in death by one son,
Freddy Wayne Ray; one brother; and five sis-
ters.
Gaylon F. Odom
Funeral services for Qaylon F. Odom, age
40, of Sulphur Springs were held at 2 p.m.
Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Tapp Funeral
Home Chapel with Bro. Ray Duck andand
Bro. Larry Jordan officiating. Burial were in
Rockdale Cemetery with Jimmy Caudle,
Randall Blakemore, Charles Mallicote, Ron-
ny Smith, Gene Barnett and Frank Sears
serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers
were the Whatley and Wise Dialysis Center
in Paris, TX.
Gaylon died at 10:02 AM Monday, June 4,
2001, at the Hopkins County Memorial Hos-
pital.
He was born December 23, 1951 in Sul-
phur Springs, TX the son of Frank Odom and
Eudene Romans Odom. He married Debra
Diane Ring on July 12, 1983 in Sulphur
Springs, TX. She survives.
He was a dairy farmer and rancher, and a
member of the New Beginnings Fellowship
Church.
Survivors include his wife, Debra Odom of
Sulphur Springs; two sons, Lawrence Ken-
cade Odom and John Gaylon Odom, both of
Sulphur Springs; two daughters, Kallie
Nadene Odom and Debora Gayle Odom
Schumpert, of Sulphur Springs; and one
brother, Gary Lane Odom of Sulphur
Springs.
He was preceded in death by his father,
Frank Odom and mother Eudene Odom.
Memorials may be made to the Rockdale
Cemetery Association and the Diabetes Asso-
ciation.
Helen Hatchel
Funeral services for Helen Hatchel, 87, of
Saltillo were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June
6, in First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon
with the Rev. Pepper Puryear officiating.
Interment followed in Grove Hill Ceme-
tery in Dallas.
Mrs. Hatchel died Monday, June 4, in
Winnsboro.
She was bom in Franklin County on June
20, 1913, the daughter of Walter S. Bums
and Mildred Cole. She married Eldon
Hatchel. He preceded her in death in 1980.
Mrs. Hatchell was a member of First Bap-
tist Church.
Survivors include four children, Pat
Hatchel of Euless, Gwendolyn Kidd of
Mesquite, Michael Hatchel of Irving and
Stephen Hatchel of McKinney; one sister,
Mildred Loving of Saltillo; two brothers,
Clint Bums of Phoenix, Ariz., and Weldon
Bums of Plano; 11 grandchildren; and 13
great-grandchildren.
John Stephens
Funeral services for John Stephens, age 36,
were held Friday, June 1, 2001 at 2 p.m. at
Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple, Texas
with Rev. Rick Gillis officiating.
Mr. Stephens died Monday, May 28, in a
Lubbock hospital of injuries he sustained in
a pedestrian-track accident.
Mr. Stephens was bom on October 1, 1964
in Temple, Texas. He graduated from Temple
High School and attended Temple College.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and was
employed by Schnieder National Tracking
Company.
Survivors include his parents, Dr. and Mrs.
Charles M. Stephens of Temple; two sisters
and brothers-in-law, Jeff and Noel Cummings
of Temple and Jamo and Cheri O’Leary; a
nephew and niece, Weston O’Leary and Han-
nah O’Leary, both of Rogers.
Interment were in Bellwood Memorial
Park in Temple.
Donations may be given to the Central
Texas Christian School of Temple.
Margaret R. Moss
Margaret R. Moss, 87, of Battle Creek died
Friday, June 1, 2001, in Heartland Health
Center.
She was bom March 30, 1914, in Denni-
son, 111., to Joseph L. and Ruby A. (Popp)
Setzer.
She moved to Battle Creek in 1938 from
Terre Haute, Ind.
She graduated from Concahnon High
School in Terre Haute, attended a nursing
program at Union Hospital in Terre Haute,
and received a bachelor's degree in nursing
from Western Michigan University in 1952.
She was a registered nurse at the Battle
Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center, a VA
center in West Virginia and the American
Legion Hospital. She also taught a practical
nurse program in Battle Creek and served for
13 months in the Army Nurse Corps during
World War II, serving in the Mediterranean
on the USS John L. Clem. She served as a
psychiatrist specialist and was discharged as
a first lieutenant in October 1945.
She married John Moss on June 27, 1947,
in South Bend, Ind. He died May 19. 1979.
She is survived by a son, Joseph L. Moss
of Bellevue; a sister, Martha McGehee of
Bedford, Va; and a stepbrother. Albert Troop
of Albion.
She was preceded in death by a stepson,
Richard A. Moss in 1964; a stepsister. Muriel
Bell.
Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at the
funeral home with the Rev. James A. Carey
officiating.
Burial: Bedford Cemetery with military
honors by the United War Veterans Council.
Memorials: Custer Chapel or Union Hos-
pital Foundation Inc. in Terre Haute.
Margaret Beard Franklin
Funeral services for Margaret Beard
Franklin, age 89, of Dallas and a native of
Sulphur Springs, were held at 10 a.m. Thurs-
day, June 7, in Myra Wilson Chapel of City
Cemetery, with Reverend Charles Moore
officiating. Interment were in Sulphur
Springs City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Gene Burt, Michael Burt,
Staunton Swift, Jim Mason, Pete Ford, Jim
Clifton and Charles Sellers.
Dan Carter served as an Honorary Pall-
bearer.
Mrs. Franklin died at 9:30 a.m. Monday,
June 4, in Baylor University Medical Center,
Dallas, Texas following a brief illness.
She was bom in Sulphur Springs, Septem-
ber 6, 1911, the daughter of Finnis and Lena
Dawson Beard.
She was a graduate of Littlefield High
School, Littlefield, Texas.
She was a former longtime Laboratory
Technician with Carnation Milk Company,
Sulphur Springs, prior to moving to Dallas in
1947. She was a member of First United
Methodist Church, Sulphur Springs.
She married L.E. Franklin in Dallas, Texas
on May 3, 1947. He preceded her in death in
1955.
Survivors: niece, Margaret Louise Ander-
son of Plano, Texas; nephew, William E.
Beard of New Albany, Ohio; god son, Wayne
Snyder of Los Angeles, California; god
daughter, Jerrie Holland of Mesquite, Texas.

Recital
The final end-of-school speech and
debate recital was presented by Lau-
rine Garrison and Rev. Woodrow Kir-
by. at the Fellowship Hall of First
United Methodist Church Sunday,
May 27.

having excelled in their respective
classes, Heather White, Jeffrey
_ Kramer and Ryan Williams. Also

Daughters of the
American Revolution
The Captain David Phillip Chapter
of the National Society of the Daugh-
ters of the American Revolution met
at 2 p.m.. May 19, in the Community
Room of the City National Bank.
Regent Lea Pompa called the meet-
ing to order and led the chapter in the
pledge to the American flag. The
DAR opening ritual was led by
Regent Pompa, assisted by Annie Lou
Dickerson. Billiefae Sellers recited
the “American’s Creed.”
Debra Wood presented a girls
choral group from North Hopkins
School. The group presented a pro-
gram of patriotic songs. A brief histo-
ry was presented before each song.
"America the Beautiful,” “Grand Old
Rag,” “Yankee Doodle,” “America"
and “This Land is Your Land" were
performed.
Minutes of the previous meeting
were read and approved. The Trea-
surer’s report was given by Billie M.
Evans.
The chapter received a thank you
note from Tamassee School for a
donation to the “Childrens Recogni-
tion Program."
Several achievement awards were
announced.
Officers for 2001 and 2002 were
installed by Regent Lea Pompa

Kevin Gibson, graduate of Texas A&M-Com-
merce. Daria Gibson and Jessica Sanders, graduates
of Sulphur Springs High School, and Chasen
McCormack, graduate of North Hopkins High
School, were all honored by a backyard hotdog
cookout May 18 hosted by Shelby McCormack at
the new home of Kevin Gibson in Martin Springs.
Graduates and guests enjoyed hot dogs with all the
trimmings, smoked sausages, baked beans, deviled
eggs, potato salad, macaroni salad, Italian pasta sal-
ad and Hawaiian bread bowls filled with numerous
dips and chips. The dessert table consisted of can-
taloupe, assorted fruit bowk and fruit dips. Assarted
cookies and brownies topped it all off.
Following dinner the guests completed in a battled
out horseshoe contest. Honorces' family members
attending the party were, Patsy Gibson, Kathy
