Death claims
John G. Long
John G. Long, 64,1512 Live Oak St., died
at 9:20 p.m. Thursday in Memorial
Hospital.
Mr. Long, who had been in ill health for
several months, recently retired from a
long career with Rockwell International’s
Sulphur Springs plant. He had served as
personnel manager for more than a
quarter of a century before becoming
special assistant to the local plant’s
general manager before his retirement.
During his long career at Rockwell, Mr.
Long employed hundreds of people and
through these contacts as well as others he
was one of the most widely known men in
Hopkins County.
He was manager of Lilly Theater’s in
Sulphur Springs before switching to
Rockwell shortly after the firm started its
initial operations here. He had resided in
Sulphur Springs since 1938.
He was born May 7, 1916 in Tyler to
Harry G. and Nannie Bess Long. His
father was a long-time engineer with the
Cotton Belt Route and Mr. Long spent
most of his early life in Commerce.
He was a graduate of Commerce High
School and East Texas State University.
On campus, he was a student leader and
was elected head cheer leader for the
athletic events.
He was a member and deacon at First
Presbyterian Church. He was a Mason and
had numerous civic and business con-
nections.
He was married to Lona Nabors Jan. 5,
1947 in Sulphur Springs. She survives.

Commerce; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy
Allison of San Angelo and Mrs. Dot Cody of
Garland; and a brother, Harry E. Long of

Brief notes: Tom Witt, the
new chief appraiser for the
Hopkins County Tax Appraisal
District, experienced
something of a shock two days
before he married: he was fired
by his prospective father-in-law
... It seems that the nepotism
law was involved. Witt was an
employee of the Dallas County
Sheriffs Department at that
time and Clarence Jones, now a
deputy in Hopkins County, was
sheriff ... Jones softens the
story a little by saying Tom
resigned before he married
Frances Jones ... Witt’s family
consists of his wife and two
small children and they’ll be
moving to Sulphur Springs as
soon as they dispose of their
home in Farmers Branch ...
Incidentally, Witt, who stands
about six-feet-five and weighs
in the 230 range, is a gifted
wrestler and works out with
weights to keep in trim... Artie
P. Stephens and Paul Peacock
were presented 50-year service
pins in a ceremony at the
Sulphur Springs Masonic lodge
... Stephens first joined the
Masonic lodge at Brashear
when he became eligible by
virtue of his age ... That lodge
no longer exists.
More notes: On a recent
Sunday morning R.E. (Sally)
Pratt enjoyed a swing over
Hopkins County to observe the
countryside. Pilot of the plane
for the local flight was a
grandson, Pete Quortrup ... He
is an experienced pilot, with
many years as a flight in-
structor, despite his 29 years of
age ... He’s a Braniff In-
ternational pilot who has felt
the current squeeze. But he’s
still flying commercially for
another firm, mainly in Texas
... Quortrup’s experience in-
cludes a stint as a pilot in the ...
unstable weather of Alaska,
where skills are given the acid
tests in light aircraft... They’re
building a couple of
greenhouses at Mount Vernon
High School, were a new course .. .
in horticulture will be in-
traduced this year. They set '
aside (20,000 for the start-up of
the program ... Cal Brim, a
talented singer, has decided to
switch his major at UT-
Arlington from voice to
marketing. Cal, who will be a
junior this fall, is employed
part-time with Six Flags Over
Texas on a year-around
assignment.
Last notes: Jim Crawford,:
county agent, has a small c*
sideline operation. He is a pig ;•
farmer, with his brood now <
numbering 22 babies, or shoats
.y Steve Eitelman, who has ;•
been an insurance agent in :>: •
Sulphur Springs for the past
five years and active in Jaycee
affairs, is reported to have
accepted a management
position with an industrial firm
in Longview... Jim Bruce, who
has been manager of Warren
Petroleum Company’s refinery
near Como, has been tran-
sferred to Oklahoma, according
to reports from neighbors ... It. . -
is interesting to note the sizable i-
land transactions that occur
from time to time in Hopkins
County to go along with smaller
