Final rites for Billy Jack
Gaines, formerly of Cumby,
were held in Dallas Thursday
morning at the Lutheran
Chvch. His wife, the former
Dorothy Parish, survives along
with three daughters and his
mother, Mrs. Wade Gaines, all
of Dallas, and his mother-in-
law, Mrs. Effie (Parish) Wilson
of Sulphur Springs.
Qeo Thompson, who recently
was a medical patient in
Memorial Hospital, is doing
nicely since he moved to
Leisure Lodge on Monday.
Julie Drummond, ac-
companied by her parents, Max
and Lou Jane, and Linda
McQueen, represented the
North Hopkins FFA chapter in
the queen contest held in the
Mount Vernon High School
auditorium last Thursday ni#it.

An apology for no news for the
last two weeks. I, Hilga
Chester, am home improving,
just doing fine, following major
surgery and 12 days in Franklin
County Hospital, Mount Ver-
non. Thanks for the prayers,
flowers, calls, visits, gifts, and
cards from friends and
relatives.
Loreta Stapp received word
last week of the death of a
grandson, Timothy Pat Stapp,
who was killed in a traffic ac-
cident in East Texas. He was
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony
Stapp of Marble Falls. Loreta
was in Marble Falls for the
services and to be with her
children.
Mama Sallie Alexander of
Cooper has been visiting
Mozelle and Clyde Bassham
and Buster Alexander. Sallie
will fly to California this
weekend for a reunion and visit
with her brother and his wife
who she has not seen for 10
Como firefighters
name new officers
New officers have been
elected by the Como Volunteer
Fire Department.
To serve during 1980 are
Eddie Flora, who was elected
fire chief; Travis Rasberry,
president; Herbert Flora Sr.,
secretary-treasurer; Bill
Evans, assistant fire chief;
Larry Nickelson, chaplain;
Carol Meeks, publicity; and
Sonny Moss, training officer.
At the same business
meeting, it was announced that
a clean- up, fix-up day would be
held and that repairs are to be
made to the truck dubbed “Big
Bertha”.
The members of the depart-
ment also learned that their
recent campaign to raise funds
through donations was
progressing well.
“We’d like to express our
thanks to everyone that has
already donated,” said a
department spokesperson, “if
the donations continue as in the
past, we’ll soon be out of debt.”
Miller Grove youths
nab stock show wins
Members of the Miller Grove
FFA chapter were winners at
the DeKalb Junior Livestock
Show.
In the Brown Swiss division,
Eric Mabe was the big winner,
capturing the senior grand
champion and grand champion
of the dairy show with his three-
year-old cow. Eric also
received blue ribbons for his
Swiss and Holstein heifers. He
won the showmanship trophy
for his skilled exhibiting of
animals.
Vickie Mabe received three
blue ribbons and the reserve
junior champion trophy for her
efforts at the shown.
Brian Lennon won class one
Swiss and Mark Garrett won
class three Swiss. Donald
Birchfield, Robin Garrett and
Ricky Jennings also received
blue ribbons for their Swiss
cattle.
In the Holstein and Guernsey
divisions, Donald Birchfield
won class one and class three.
Members of the chapter will
be showing at the Fort Worth
Livestock Show this week.
Millionaire for a day
J.O. Walker (right) was a millionaire for a day recently after
winning a drawing at the First National Bank. Presf ent of the
bank Rick Palmer presented Walker with a checker $273.97,
which represents the interest accured on a million dollars in one
day. Being a millionaire for one day didn't change Walker
much. "Easy come easy go," he said after receiving his check.
"But it was fun to tell people I was a millionaire if only for one
day," he added.

Miss Nell Long taught school
for Mrs. Marya Estes, who was
in Lubbock last week attending
foe services for her father, Roy
Hooten, who died following a
car accident.
Clovis Adair has been
dismissed from Franklin
County Hospital and is at home
doing fine after having surgery
last week.

Jess Smith, a life-long resident.
He was 72 years of age. Sur-
vivors include his wife, Trixie, a
daughter, Ell Leta Harele of
Austin; a step-son, Ken Dickson
of Dallas; three broters, Ralph
of Dallas, Carl of Bogata and
Claude of Commerce; four
grandchildren; and two step-
grandchildren. Funeral ser-
vices were held at Tapp
Funeral Home Monday, with
burial in foe local cemetery.
Lunch was served to foe Smith
family at the Community
Center.
Funeral services were held
last week for F.A. Pettit, life-
long resident, and for Grady
Knight, a former resident.
