It is with sorrow after havinir so latelv thrown offi
the habiliments of mourning for a departed patriot of ourg
mother land- we again assume the sombre weeds on the:
occasion of the death of one who stood high in the esteem
and affection of the people of Texas. The Hon. K. L i
Anderson Vice-President of the Republic died at Fan-!
thorpe's Montgomery county on Thursday last of fever bjj
Col. Anderson was uniformly distinguished as n
warm advocate of the popular measure of Annexation :u
and it is sad to record the death of such men at the verySf
time that the great object for which they so ardently strove.a
is so near its consummation.
HisExcellency President Jones arrived in this city on;
Saturday evening last.
Celebration of the Fourth. In the forenoon ofj
the 4th the arrangements adopted by the 'Committee;
appointed for that purpose for paying funeral honors to
General Andrew Jackson were carried out -with com
plete and happy effect. The proceedings throughout'
were conducted in the most solemn and appropriate man
ner and an unusually large concourse of citizens and
strangers united on the occasion.
At noon great numbers partook of a magnificent barba
cue providi-d by our hospitable fellow-citizens Mr. Sam'i
Barron and Col. R. Wilson at their residence; wherei
also the regular target filing of the Milam Guards took
place.
The celebration in the afternoon by the pupils of the
different Sunday Schools excited much interest. Appro
"priate addresses were delivered at the Methodist Church.
after which they returned to the Presbyterian Church!
where a most sumptuous banquet was provided for the
children and all comers.
The orations considering the short lime given for pre
paration were worthy of all praise; and the day passed
off without the occurrence of an accident of any sort tr
mar the solemnity or harmony of the different celebra
tions.

We conclude to day the published correspondence be
tween Maj. Donelson the United States Charge d'Affahe
in Texas and our Government relative to the Joint Reso
lution for the annexation of Texas to the United Stales.
From ths tenor of Mr. Donelson's communications ii will
be perceived that the most serious objections uiged byihe
strongest opponents of annexation on the ground of injus
tice or scant liberality to Texas are completely renoved
Texas when sne enters the Uinon will do so upon higher!
and and more advantageous grounds than any of her pre
decessors since ihe federation.
We scarcely know in what teims to accord to Mr.jfj

Donelson the compliment wnicn an acKnowiedge to be
due to him for his thoroughly effective yet unostentatious
course in presenting the subject of annexation in its properg
