The fears that Ihe difficulties between Great Britain
and the United Slates relative to Oregon will result in
war-are regarded ns chimerical by the editors of the National-Intelligencer.
The Intelligencer says
"""" sWe arc happy to Tenew our congratulation to our
roadersaipon the conviction we have arrived-ntrom cvi
denct we deem satisfactory? that War as a means of
adjusting' ih- difficulty with England is not within any
rational calculation of probabilities."
The New York Hen Id slates that immediately arVr
the Message of President Polk was read in Congress Mr.
Packenham the British Minister sent oiders by express
to Ibe commanders of the British vessels of war on the
American coast. For what purpose these orders were
sent isiioi stuted.
PERFUMES A PREVENTIVE AGA INST
MOULDINESS.
Dr. M'Culloh ofEdmburgh. has published a paper in
the Philosophical Transactions of the city in which he
points out that all essential oils posses the property of
presenting the growth of mould. His observations are of
such gVneral utility that we copy lhm into our more
popularly circulated pagis for the public bemht.
Ink p.istet leather and seeds are among the common
articles which suffer from this cause and to which the
remedy is usually applicable. ' With respect to aiticles of
food -such as bread old meats or dried nsh it is less easy
to apply a remedy on account of the taste. Cloves how-
ever and other spicps whose flavors ate grateful may
sometimes be used for this end- and that they act in con-
sequence of this principle and not by any pailicular anti-
septic virtue seems plain by their preventing equally the
growth of -those minute crytogamous plants on ink and
other substances not of an -animal nature.
"The effect of cloves in preventing the. mouldiness in
Ink is indeed generally known ; and it is obtained in the
same way by oil oHavender in a very minute yjjuantity
or by any other of the perfumed oils.
"To preserve Leather in the same manner from this"
effect is a mailer of greatimportance particularly fn mili
tary store-houses where the labor employ d inx:lennihg
harness and shoes is a cause of considerable expensp and
and where much injury is -occasionally sustained from the
cause. The same essential oils answer the purpose .as
far as I have had an opportunity of trying effectually.
The cheapest of course should be selected and it would
be necessery to try oil of turpentine for this reason. The
total interruption of all my pursuits has hitherto prevented
me from carrying these trials as far as I intended.
"It is a remarkable confirmation of this circumstance
that Russian leather which is perfumed with the tar of
the birch trep is not subject to raoudiness as must be well
known to ill who possess books thus rjound They even
prevent it from taking pface in those books bound in calf
near to which they h.ippen to lie. The fact is particular-
ly well known to Russian merchants as they suffer blips
of this ar ticle-to lie in the London docks in the mosl careless
manner for a grrat hngth of lime knowing well thai they
can sustain no Injury of this nature from dampness where-
as common curried leather require's to be opened cleansed
and ventilated. Collectors of books will not be sorry to
learn that a few drops of any perfumed oil will insure
their libraries from this pest.
"Br. 3V1 began some experiments with the same agents
or wood to prevent ihe dry rot but not having lima to
carry them on he recommends the important investigation
toothers. With regard to paste he prefers rosinoalum
as a preservative; but lavender or any other strong per-
fume such as peppermint anise burgamot are perfectly
eSecluai forycars however the paste is composed " That
which the Dc himself employs in labelling &c is ''made
of flour in the usual way but rather thick with a propor
tion of brown sugar and-a small quantity of corrosive
sublimate The use of the sugar is to keep it flexible so
as to prevent its scalingoff from smooth surfaces; and that
otlbe .corrosive-sublimate indepmdently of preserving it
from insects asan effectual check against its fermentation.
This silt however does not prevent the formation of
mouldiness. "But as a drop or two of the essential oils
above mentioned is a complete security against this all
the causes of destruction an- effectually guarded against.
ltsti' made hlhis manner and exposed to the air dries
wilhoutchange ton stale resembling bom; so that it ma)'
at any time be vettediagain and applied to use. 3 When
kept in a close covered pot it may be preserved in a state
bi use at all times.
He proceeds '' I his principle seems also applicable to
the preservation of seeds particularly in cases Avhere they
are sent from distant countries by sea whpn it is well
known that they often perish from this cause. Dampness
of course wtll perform its office atfany rate if moisture is
not excluded ; yet it is certain that ibe growth of the
vegetables which. constitute jiould accelerate the evil"
whether by retaining moisture or by what means ismot
very apparent. This in fact happens equally in the case
of dry rot in wood and indeed in all others where this
cause operates It is a curious illustration of the truth of
this view of a remedy that the aromatic seeds of all kinds
are not subject to mould and that their vicinity prevents
it in others with -whieh they are packed; they also pro-
duce thesame effect daily even in animal matters without
its being suspected. Not to repeat any thing on the sub-
ject oFcookery I need only semark that it is common to
put pepper into collections of insects or birds without its
having been remarked that it had the same power of keep-
ing off mould as of discouraging or killing the plinus
omnivorous or other insects that commit ravages in these
cases.
"In concluding these hints Tmight add in illustration
of them that ginger-bread and bread containing carrway
seeds is far less liable to mouldiness than plain bread. It
will be a matter worthy of consideration how farflour
might be preserved by some project of this kind.

Webster's Elementary Spelling Book
Or a Speller and Definer;
Containing a selection of about 12000 of the nfost useful words in
the English Language with their definitions ; intended to be used
aSa spelling Uoolk anda Dictionary. By William G. Webster son
of the lato Noah Webster LL. D.
The object of this Definer is to present to the scholar a selection
of such words and their definition as are in general ufb and such
as are met with in school Heading Books. The other words gene-
rally iound in school dictionaries are omitted as of little benefit in a
common school education and only teuding to lumber up the mind
ata great expense oftime.
School dictionaries usually contain about th'rty thousand words.
A child that is compelled to learn and recite the meaning of every
word as it is alphabetically arranuedj will be likely to retain after
all only such words and their definitions as are found in the read-
ing lessons for schools and suchas are used m ordinary conversa-
tion. Hence ihe advantage claimed for this selection which we
now offer to the notice of those in the cause of education.
It is so arranged that it may be used both-as a Spelling Book
and as a Dictionary. It ia the opinion of many intelligent teachers
who have acquainted themselves with.theplau of this book that it
only needs to be generally known to be universally adopted as.an
indispensable work to follow the Spelling Book andvDictionary?--
