LIVINGSTON BITS AND PIECES

WASHINGTON

I had a very rewarding ex-
perience Tuesday. I was one of the
Pride Week speakers at the
Livingston Primary School. It was
sort of scarey getting up before
about 40 little eager faces staring
back at you. I’m hoping that I said
something that they might remem-
ber. A special thanks to the coun-
selors for inviting me. I loved every
minute of it.
Mrs. Pamela Tellie’s proved to
be a very dynamic speaker Sunday
at the Dr. Martin Luther King
program at Macedonia. She spoke
about Dr. Kings’ dream and how
we can keep the dream alive. Mrs.
Tellie’s said "if you can’t be a tree,
be a bush,” also that one should
seek to do his life’s work as if God
Almighty called him at that par-
ticular moment in history to do it.
And he must do it with respon-
sibility, no matter how small it hap-
pens to be. He must do a little job
in a Big way.” She also said that
"we’ve come a long way, but we’ve
still got a long way to go. If you
can’t run, walk. If you can’t walk,
crawl. But, by all means, keep
moving." Everyone enjoyed Mrs.
Tcllie’s speech.
Mr. Elgin Davis was presented
an award at the program for com-
munity service by the brotherhood
of Macedonia church for his untir-

The January Covered Dish Sup-

well attended, with about 40 resi-

Darrell Longino and his wife, Don-
na, and Donna’s sister from Hous-
ton, Carolyn Latour, came out to
share in tne fellowship and do a
little campaigning. January
birthday honorees were Lena
Reynolds, Lara Carter, Jesse Shep-
tock, and G.I. Weatherford, who
admits to being every bit of 39
years old again. Don and Dorothy
Bartgis celebrated their wedding
anniversary in January, too, and
were treated to a special song by

help in putting together the party
was much appreciated. The Babbs

time with about sixty-two friends

I’m back in school at SHSU this
semester, doing the "methods
courses" preliminary to student
teaching in the fall. My teachers
find it fascinating that one of their
students writes a gossip column,
and one of them, Dr. Henderson,
brought me a newspaper from
Houston to share with you. The fol-
lowing anecdote is taken from
"Dumpster Sporadical," May 1991,
published by a comedy group that
performs, sporadically, in Houston.
"On Monday KDUM disc jockey
Rudy Cazuti announced over the
air the fifth caller would receive
$100 worth of free radio advertis-
ing, and as of yesterday, only two
calls had been received. Station
owner Dave Odum issued a state-
ment saying, "It almost sounds like
nobody js listening, or if they are
they don’t think anyone else is."

the hours of hard work he puts in.
Elgin is a graduate of Dunbar High
School, served in the Vietnam con-
flict and served on the Livingston
ISD school board for 15 years. He
is currendy employed as Project
Director of the Dunbar Complex.
His many awards and certificates
were on display at Macedonia
church Sunday. He is a good role
model for our youth.
I hope everyone had a chance to
visit the information booths after
the MarUn Luther King program
Monday night. They were full of
useful information. I especially,
noticed the blood pressure screen-
ing booth was busy, also the Drug
Awareness Booth. I was disap-
pointed that the Education and the
Job opportunities boothes didn’t
have many visitors. I was sure the
young people would be interested
in those two. Yes, I was looking.
The program was very good. The
