THERMOSTAT BATTLE IS
HEATING UP THIS HOUSE
My Husband has finally hit upon
a way to shut me up. During the
winter, he keeps the thermostat so
low, my body goes into a state of
inertia. Sometimes I have no recol-
lection of the months of January,
February or March. The other
morning I huddled two inches from
the TV set watching a rerun of
“The Beverly Hillbillies" - just
for the heat.
It is bad enough being married to
the Prince of Darkness and having
your house lighted by fluorescent
tape. Add to that a man who plays
musical thermostats, and we’re
talking miser/here.
I read a story recently about how
most women employees suffer
through cold temperatures in the
work place. A maintenance en-
gineer noted that more women
complained about the cold and
more men about the heat, which
suggests different body tempera-
tines. It's the same in our home. I
say the temperature is perfect -- for
a wax museum. My husband's
answer to white lips and frostbitten
feet is, “Put on a sweater.”
I grew up in a house where we
bought SO cents worth of coal at a
time to beat an eight-room, two-
story house. During the winter,
seven of the rooms were like meat
lockers. Only the kitchen was
heated by an oven. I used to run
from my bed to the kitchen and
jump on a chair (heat rises), where
I ate breakfast, dressed and stood
around until spring.
I promised myself when I got
married, I would die from the heat
That was before I married a man
with fur on his chest and antifreeze
running through his veins.
a boot. A voice comes from the
darkness, “You know I can't deep
in a hot room.”
“This room is freezing.”
“It's 70 degrees in here,” he
mumbles, “That was warm enough
for you to go swimming in Florida.
Why isn’t it warm enough to sleep?
What's the difference?”
W. mrt „yta, 800 .
for this room, that's the
ference."
There is quiet for a few seconds
‘My nose is cold,” I said.
“That means you’re healthy.”
“Where did you read that? On
an Alpo dog food can?”
“Goto sleep.”
“I’m afraid to. I won't wake
I hear him sigh at the thermostat.
The furnace clicks on.
I've won for today, but tomor-
row I do battle again.
