out on their otherwise routine shop-
ping trips.
The Griffins are from California.
After they retired, they were visit-
ing their son and daughter-in-law in
Houston when they were lured to
the lake area by the price of land
here from ads they saw in the
Houston newspapers. They came,
they saw and they moved. That was
in October 1990.
The Griffins enjoy people, and
having a retail store was a natural
for them. They say they try to buy
merchandise that will appeal to
most everybody. As for their
prices, they say they’ve received
“no complaints.”

You’ve heard of volunteer
programs where volunteers call up
shut-ins to check on their health
and safety, but now one local
woman has set up a commercial
service founded on a systematic ap-
proach to the problem.
The service, operated by Laura
Sizenbach of Onalaska, is designed
for any number of situations,
people who arc homebound or suf-
propriate person or agency. When
they subscribe, the customer
provides three phone numbers to
alert that something is wrong. It
may be a neighbor, a family mem-
ber, or whomever the customer
selects.
Sizenbach, who teaches school at
Shepherd Junior High School,
began the service last October. She
feels that because of the high num-

for questionable health, children at
home after school, etc. It is limited
to persons with touchtonc phones.
With individualized programs
for each customer, the calls are
made by computer every hour or
however the system may be set up
for that customer. The message is
simply, “Hello, how you arc?” If
they arc okay, the recipient of the
call is to press 1 on their phone. It
also advises the recipient to touch 0
if they need assistance, in which
case the computer alerts the ap-
propriate person as determined by
the customer when they subscribed
to the service.
If there is no response, the com-
puter immediately alerts the ap-
ber of retired persons in the lake
area, there should be a need for
such monitoring.
The first month’s service is free,
and the alert numbers may be either
local or long distance. (The service
costs more if it’s long distance.)
This kind of service is being done
across the U.S.
Sizenbach, originally from
Spring Branch, has lived in Onalas-
ka for 12 years. For more informa-
